For those of you that have noticed oil pressure drops, etc. There IS a screen below the oil pressure sending unit that does become clogged!! I have an 07 GMC Sierra, 4x4 Crew Cab, SLE2 package, 144,000 miles. 5.3 litre. I change my oil faithfully at 3000 mile intervals, use Castrol GTX High Mileage oil and Purolator oil filters. Air filter gets replaced every other oil change. Now for what happened...... very cold day, pulled out onto the Interstate and accelerated only to hear the truck rev, and go nowhere. Dropped it out of overdrive and got going, then lost that gear. Limped it to a shop in 2nd....yes the tranny went out. Had a new tranny installed and the mechanics called me and said when they test drove the truck, it had lost oil pressure and shut down. They replaced the oil pressure switch, and it had 40 psi of pressure but slowly dropped down to nothing and shut off. By now the first thought was oil pump or pick up. I called a couple of shops to get answers, and no one ever mentioned (or had even heard of) a screen located just below the oil pressure switch. Called local GM dealer and did confirm that there indeed is a small screen below the switch. $5.80 filter screen. We pulled the old one out, put in the new screen, reinstalled the new pressure switch and all is good. Now some of you may know about this little screen/filter. But I did not, and neither did a few reputable shops. Basically I am posting this to inform others. That's what we're all here for. I'm not sure if this filter is installed on other engines, or even what model year. Maybe someone that knows can chime in. In this case it really paid to call a GM dealership with a good service department. I might have been pulling an engine over a $5.80 filter screen. As to why it plugged up, I'm not sure. We cut apart the oil filter, and no sludge or foreign material. Hopefully this post will help inform someone and save them some big bucks............Or maybe I live in an area where we are way behind on our info on GM vehicles....lol

I have a 2017 Silverado 5.3L. Used to stay around 40 pounds of oil. Now when idling, is goes down to 20-25 ish pounds. It’s not throwing any codes up but does have a bit of a knock if I floor it without letting the pressure build back up first. Cold start it’s just below 40 pounds but at operating temps (210) it drops like crazy. It’s not oil quality or level, I just changed it last week and it was good for half a day and went back down.

Approximately 2 years ago while driving my CEL came on. The code reader indicated low oil pressure and the oil pressure gauge was around 17-20 at idle. I changed the oil and filter and the pressure returned to normal (oil change #1). On that oil change I did two filter only changes. When due according to the oil life indicator I changed oil and new filter (oil change #2). That oil and filter was changed according to oil life indicator (oil change #3) Today while driving, once the truck warmed up, (15% on oil life monitor) the oil pressure dropped to 0 suddenly and shut engine off light came on. I pulled over shut the truck off and waited, checked oil (plenty of it), and started the truck back up. Oil pressure came back to normal and then dropped back to 0. I was close to home (<1 mile) and was able to limp home with start-stopping multiple times to maintain oil pressure. I changed oil and filter (oil change #4) and oil pressure returned to normal. Can anybody comment on what is happening? I would like to avoid running into an oil pressure issue on a longer trip, if I am only addressing the symptom and not the cause. Could the cause really be the filter getting full, or the oil degrading despite the oil life indicator suggesting there is more life?

Hello, I'm new to this forum. I have a 2012 GMC Sierra with 150,000 miles. The 5.3 litre engine has had the oil changed every time the oil life has hit 30% , around 5 to 6 thousand miles. The oil pressure dropped and I replaced the oil pressure sending unit (opsu) and the problem was fixed for about a month. The old screen filter under the opsu was dirty but not severely clogged. After about a month the oil pressure dropped to 20 lbs and the check engine light came back on. I am considering pulling the opsu back out , @ operating temperature, and squirting brake cleaner or something down the oil passage followed by 2 hot oil changes. My question is , 1: is this a good idea?, 2: where does that oil passage directly lead to?

my 6.0 with 230xxx has low oil pressure but no knocks maybe a little tick though. When i bought the truck it had maybe 5-9psi cold dropping to 0 warm. Thought it may have been a pickup tube oring or oil pump so i went ahead and replaced the pickup tube, o ring, and pump. it now gets 20 cold 7 warm at idle and 0 warm at idle and 20 warm running 1700 rpm. Which is a lot better but still a problem. I am aware the bearings may be shot and need a total rebuild, that is not out of the options. It is not electrical or sensor based issue same psi with a mechanical gauge. However I need to replace my harmonic balancer and take off the timing cover again so i was looking at it and could it be as simple as a o camshaft retainer plate? it has a build in thin o ring which if fails will drain pressure as it connects the oil gallys. Am I correct in thinking that this could solve my issues? Any input is helpful, thanks.

I have just over 1,000 miles on the 2019 Trail Boss 4.3L motor. This morning for the first time I noticed the oil pressure gauge dropped to 30 when pulling into a parking spot and then sitting idle. When I revved the engine a little bit the pressure went back up to about 50-60. I have never seen it at 30, mostly stays like 40-60 range. Any cause for concern? As a reference I drove about 10 miles, mostly highway, and it is 60-64 degrees outside. What do you all get for pressure readings with your motors - maybe list idle pressure and cruising pressure with the motor type. Thanks!

New to the forum here, and I have a 2005 chevy silverado 1500 with the 5.3L. I drive to and from michigan from chicago for college every couple of weeks. The last time I drove up to michigan 2 hours into my drive the oil pressure gauge started slowly moving down from 40psi. Every 10 minutes it seemed it moved down a notch until it got to 15psi and then I pulled over just to investigate because the truck was running perfectly normal and no warning lights or anything were on. I did a walk around, no leaks, no engine noise and the oil level was in the same place as when I left. Also when I stopped the pressure gauge dropped to 0 at idle and the truck idled normal. I continued to drive till i got to my destinations 30 minutes later. The next day when I started it back up the oil pressure is now reading normal and has read normal for the last week. I went to tech school and I know my way around an engine and i'm almost positive this isn't a mechanical issue, im thinking its the oil pressure sensor or sending unit or it could be the gauge itself because first gen silverados are famous for bad gauges but i feel if it was a bad sensor there would be warning lights? Not sure though, any of you guys experience an issue like this or have any idea of what to check or what it could be?? Much appreciated!!

Preface: 06 Sierra, lq9, 165k Currently showing 40psi at cold start and stays there until coolant reaches operating temp. Hot idle will usually sit around 32psi some times dip down to 25psi. Will not go over 65psi at WOT. It used to never be lower than 40psi at idle and would peg out to 80psi at WOT. I changed the oil pressure sending unit hoping that was it, no change. I have not hooked up a mechanical gauge to check it. Looking for some thoughts. Is my gauge cluster just malfunctioning? Oil pump? Pickup tube o-ring? Engine trash? Let me know what you think. I read once upon a time something about gm saying that the engine is only supposed to produce 10psi for every 1000 rpm. I don’t buy that.

Here's an issue that has me stumped. 2000 Silverado, 4.3, 200K mi. Truck runs great, no oil consumption. I have a very random oil pressure fluctuation, normally I have 40 psi (+ or - 5psi) pretty steady, not affected by rpm or temp. about 20,000 mi. ago I started getting a lifter tick on start up accompanied by crazy fluctuation in oil pressure relative to rpm ( 15psi at idle and 60+ at 3500) It will do this for maybe a week and then stop....no tick and steady oil pressure again. Truck has always had regular oil changes with quality oil (dino) and a Wix filter, I've tried Lucas oil additive, Marvel, different viscosities between 10-30 and 15-40 nothing makes it worse or better. Seems to go away by itself and then return completely at random. Sometimes it will go 5k with no issues, other times maybe 2k. Not affected by oil changes or mileage...just comes and goes. Always lifter tick and oil fluctuation....tick goes away and so does crazy oil pressure. WTF is going on?

Just an observation this evening. Have a 2017 Suburban, 3500 miles (purchased Jan, 2018). Temp outside this evening after work was -18*. Running original Synthetic 0w20 I believe, has not been changed yet (changing oil soon). Hit the start button and up and running. Oil pressure rolled up to 40, then a few seconds later rolled up to 60. It stayed at 60 for 10-15 seconds then ticked down to 50, stopped there for a second then down to 40. When its “warm” it’s normally at 40 (+/- 3), so anywhere from 37-43ish. Was just curious if this was normal? First time starting in that cold of weather, have never seen it do that before. I’m sure others have been in much worse so looking for other experiences. I have a diesel truck that simply starts at a higher pressure when it’s cold then slowly moves down. Have never seen a gasser move like this, and fairly quick between the movements. It wasn’t a slow increase or decrease. High temp for tomorrow is -16 so will be closer to -20+ when started tomorrow night. Will watch it again.

I purchased a 2014 gmc 5.3 with 80k. the lifters were all replaced under warranty. soon after i noticed 10 psi oil pressure after driving 25 min on highway. dealer replaced oil pump still has 10 psi after 25 min of driving. when i first start up its at 40, oil pressure goes to 70 when rpm exceeds 3500 rpm. oil pressure starts to drop to 20 after 10 min and seems fine. after 25 min it drops to 10 on guage. i had oil pressure checked with mechanical guage and confermed guage is accurate. i asked dealer to che k the screen under oil pressure switch they said it was clean. at this time dealer says nothing is wrong due to specs at 1000,2000,3000 rpm. i called gm customer care and they said to get different dealer to look at. i did and they confermed rpm at different rpm and charged me 118.00 gm customer care did nothing to help me out. i have never seen any truck with 10 psi at idle. does anyone else seem to have this issue?

Hello, Everyone I know this seems like an unimportant thing to complain about, but today, while driving, I noticed that my oil pressure was too high. I pulled over and shut the engine off to investigate, only to discover that my Oil pressure Gauge Needle is Offset, and I don't know how it happened, is this normal? The gauge seems to read just fine, just with an offset of almost half the sweep Does anyone have a fix for this? I don't have OCD or anything but I just find it very annoying, since the truck has less than a year with me Thanks in advance, Here are a couple of pics, truck completely off, and at idle:

Hello all, I have a 2000 Chevy Silverado LT 5.3 Z71 with 270,000 miles. I really need some help/advice. Recently I've been experiencing problems with my truck not starting when the engine is at operating temperature. For instance, I drive it 15 minutes, turn it off, run in a store, come back out and it won't start. Well, I say "start" but what I really mean is it will start and then immediately die. It will idle for about half a second around 300-400 rpms and just shut off. Usually what I will do is just keep trying to crank it and eventually after doing the same thing for about 20 keyturns, it will struggle to idle for maybe 10 seconds and then idle and run smoothly. I'm then able to drive home no problem. No noise or rattling or anything. The "Service Enginge Soon" light is always on regardless and has been since I got the truck 3 years ago. Obviously I cannot do this forever as something is wrong and I don't want to end up stranded in some parking lot. Plus I know I'm wearing out the starter cranking it so many times. I live in South Carolina and yesterday it was around 100 degrees, so this problem will only get worse as the high temps make it harder for the oil to cool down. After browsing the internet on and off for several weeks I'm convinced that is an oil pressure problem. I don't know if the engine is simply worn out and on its last leg where the only thing to do is rebuild the engine with new bearings and whatnot to get the proper oil pressure. But I also don't know if it's something else that I just don't know about. I've read that it could be the oil pump pickup tube or that running a thicker viscosity oil like 15w30 or 10w40 would help with the pressure. I just don't know and I'm hoping someone has experienced this and can offer a solution. I'm just wondering if I need to even go down this rabbithole or just try to trade it in and get a new car payment and a [peace of mind] warranty. Few things: 1. I thought that maybe I had a bad Oil Pressure Sensor and that it was automatically shutting off the truck on its own. Since I didn't feel any vibrations or hear any noise, I figured why not just detach the sensor for now and see if the truck will stay running. I thought at first that this had worked but no, engine still shutting off. 2. I just changed the oil with 5 quarts of Mobil 1 5w30 and an STP oil filter. I also added one quart of Marvel Mystery Oil to it to help get out possible gunk. The oil level is in the proper range on the dipstick. 3. Last week I cleaned the Mass Air Flow sensor out with MAF cleaner in a spray can because the engine sounded to me like it couldn't breathe. However, I was able to rule that out b/c it did not fix the problem. 4. I was seeing a few articles on the problem being a small filter under the oil pressure sensor that clogs easily so that the sensor cannot get a correct pressure reading. However, I believe my truck doesn't have that filter. I think it was only on models from 2007 forward. I will try to make a short video of exactly what it's doing and post it here in the next few days. Thanks in advance for your help.

Have a 2011 6.2 chev silverado.Truck has about 100,000k on it now.Runs perfect but noticed oil preesure has dropped.Up to 90,000k it always run just above the 275kpa on gauge. Now it is to the bottom of 275kpa.Now i am talking the bottom of 2 for low and a needle width above the 5 on the high.It has dropped that much, this is cruising down HWY at 100k at 1600rpm.Any one else notice a drop or is it time to test the 160000k power train warranty.

My one owner(me) 1996 Silverado with 5.7L 350 8 cyl. 2WD 286000 miles I took it in to get the heater core replaced after I smelled and found coolant in the cab floor (not the first one I've had to replace but it has been a couple of years ) I had no other issues that I knew of but as soon as I picked it up the service engine light came on and I saw no oil pressure. I took it back and asked if they would check it. They told me it was nothing to do with what they worked on but would check it. When I went back they said I needed a new motor. I drove it 50 miles home. It did not over heat or make noise but it still showed no oil pressure. I took it to a local guy who had recently changed the rotor, distributor cap, wires, and sensors, and oil, and he replaced the oil pump and put a mechanical gauge on the dash. After I picked it up before I got home the check engine light was on again. I took it back and he just said he didn't know what it was unless maybe the computer. So I took it to another guy and he tells me that it had spun a bearing and the only option is to replace the motor. Then another guy says he can replace the bearings and it's not big deal parts plus a hundred or two for labor. I still have no lifter noise, no knocking, maybe a miss at idle if I listen hard, I'm not sure. Can anyone tell me something different?

I have a 98 GMC sierra with the 5.7L and every time I drive it, my oil pressure is all over the place. When its started cold it reads 60, when its warmed up at cruising speeds of about 55-60mph it reads 40, but as soon as the RPMs drop when I coast, idle, or drive under about 10-15mph (warmed up) the pressure reads 20. Is this normal.. Sure doesnt seem right to me. I had a bonneville a while back and the oil pressure never varied like this.
