Thx for your reply Tony, I appreciate it. I’m certainly glad ALL the lifters have been replaced. -
Any after stories with failed lifters?

Picked up my truck yesterday afternoon…..second bank of lifters was replaced. So far everything sounds good….I guess now I just keep my fingers crossed every time I get in and start driving. One curious thing though…..I posted a couple weeks ago in a different thread about the knocking/metallic rapping noises that I was hearing when I first started up my truck in the morning (chilly mornings)…..I didn’t hear those noises this morning. Many theories I read online mentioned carbon deposits as the possible explanation. Were these knocking noises a warning of what was to come (lifters failing)? I do believe they’re separate issues, but if I knew anything I guess I wouldn’t be on a Forum such as this. So, fingers crossed….until I have to type here again. (Yeah, I know, very pessimistic). Thx again to everyone. -

Really sorry to hear about the trouble you’re going through…..that’s a lot of $$. I just feel like I’m always gonna be worried about something going wrong…especially if I’m on a long trip or something. I have 16k miles on this thing and it’s major repair #3 so it’s hard to have any feelings of optimism. -

Couldn’t agree more…..I immediately brought the same point up when they mentioned “additional lifters may need replacement” but ultimately only did one bank. 16k miles and this is my 3rd major repair (leaking rear window took over a week to fix). Unreal. -

Thx my friend…I hope your truck’s future is brighter than mine’s past and present. I’m picking up a loaner tomorrow morning and then we’ll just have to wait and see. I feel like I’m getting what I asked for…..I have owned multiple 4Runners (loved them/no issues) and a Honda Pilot (loved it/no issues)……and I traded in an Audi Q7 (best car EVER/no issues) for my Sierra…..I’m almost fearful admitting that because I now expect someone reading this to show up at my house to beat some sense into me……it would be deserved. -

And here we go again. Good morning all….hope everyone is doing well. I once again had my truck towed to my dealership (on MON) with similar symptoms that led to one bank of lifters being replaced and numerous posts here. I was just informed TODAY that the other bank now needs replacement. After my first issue, I was told by the service manager that he has only seen a vehicle come back for a second bank replacement “1 or 2 times”….so boy do I feel SPECIAL . Looks like the best case scenario is “a week or week and a half”……I have just about given up believing in any best case scenarios. Now I just have to battle to get a loaner or a rental and hope for the best apparently. Several other similar vehicles are currently in this dealer’s shop for lifter replacements or total engine replacements, which will probably be the next shoe to drop for me. Really disappointed…..I’ll be looking at Tundras and Titans when inventories increase. No way I can trust this truck going forward. I’ll update my situation as it unfolds…..thanks again to everyone for guidance/opinions/personal accounts. -
Good morning all: Thanks for all the advice leading up to the replacement of one bank of lifters on my truck……it’s been about a month since the work was done and, so far, all seems to be going well. Mornings here in MA are still pretty chilly and I am hearing loud, metallic knocking/rapping noises from the front end of my truck when I first start it up for a warm-up. The noises usually last for a minute or so and are noticeably loud. I usually let my truck run for about 15 minutes to warm-up, but if I have to leave immediately after I start the truck, the knocking/rattling continues for a bit as I start driving…..this DEFINITELY freaks me out because it sounds VERY similar to the knocking/clicking noises I heard right when my lifters crapped out and had me calling a tow truck for the eventual lifter repair saga. Thanks for any advice/information anyone can provide.

Any after stories with failed lifters?

Picked up my truck and drove it home without any issues. One bank of lifters was replaced. 1) I asked if anything else was removed/replaced/repaired/etc and I was told “No”…..I specifically referred to the serpentine belt and other belts and the Service manager said none of those have to be removed to make my necessary lifter repairs. 2) I expressed concern over what to expect from the bank of lifters that was NOT replaced and I was told that no vehicles have come back to them with issues in the last 1&1/2 years…..but (and this is the good part) people that have had similar issues have contacted GM to inquire about warranty extension and maybe it would be a good idea for me to do the same…..needless to say, that didn’t leave me with a warm, fuzzy feeling in my tummy. I did appreciate the information and recommendation and will most likely do just that. Has anyone here done this and would/could you offer any suggestions or advice before I make a call to GM? Maybe I can expedite my approach if someone shares their experience inquiring about warranty extension due to major engine issues. Thanks to all. -

Great advice here and I appreciate it. Thanks for all the helpful replies. I am going to ask what else, if anything, got replaced and make sure I keep my notes (calls, conversations, receipts) on the issue. I’m going to get the truck now…we’ll see what the future holds. -

Just spoke with Service…..of course I had to call them and did so 45 minutes before they close. Was told one bank of lifters was replaced and I can pick the truck up tomorrow morning. Lots of thoughts going through my head but I’m just gonna pick the thing up and wait until the next issue……pessimistic, I know. We’ll see what the future holds. For now I have to live with myself knowing I traded-in an Audi Q7 for this thing. F**k me. -

So now MORE lifters may have to be replaced in addition to the initial “one bank”. As usual, I had to call Service for updates as they refuse to keep their “promise” to call me…..I WILL NOT piss and moan but I WILL be an update-requesting pest. I’m waiting for my daily update that I will certainly have to initiate again, but I am less than optimistic I will receive any credible details. Negativity is starting to ooze in to my attitude….I wish dealerships had inventory as I’d certainly be perusing new truck options. -

I’m with ya….and no need to apologize….sorry for what you’ve had to go through. My rear window has been finesince it’s repair (replacement) so I hope I’ll be able to say the same thing about my latest issue….again, we’ll see. -

Really appreciate your supportive reply. I just spoke with the dealership and they will be reimbursing me for the rental and said my truck should be ready late Monday. I’m not going to get my hopes up for anything….not to be negative, just so I may be pleasantly surprised. After my rear window leak issue, this is major problem #2 and I have yet to reach 14k miles. I don’t want to say “3 strikes and you’re out”, but I feel like I might. We’ll see. -

One new bank of lifters “should be in this morning” and will be installed….they apparently need two days to complete. I inquired about how to file for rental reimbursement, so I’ll see where that goes when/if someone gets back to me. As I stated in my earlier post, I am willing to accept delays because of Covid, short-staffing, etc…..I am trying to NOT raise hell because I know these are crazy times and i feel the calm approach will get me my truck back faster than yelling at someone (as much as I’d like to)…..although if I am to believe all the reports that dealerships have no inventory, shouldn’t the Sales department be operating with a skeleton staff and NOT Service?! Whatever…..the dance continues……. -

Thanks for your reply…..I have almost 14k miles on it and I’ve read about how the mileage dictates what gets done…..meaning how many lifters are repaired/replaced. I specifically asked the dealer service department if I could drive it home and if I would be damaging anything if I did so. They told me to get it home and call Roadside Assistance. Looks like I’m now just in a wait cycle… no loaners so I rented a car on my own, no idea how readily available parts are, no idea when this repair will be complete…… I’m just trying to stay patient and upbeat…no sense pissing and moaning. -

Nope, not misreading…….I’m willing to believe that Covid has caused delays in many areas such as staffing…..and the manager said they are operating with a skeleton staff in the service dept……but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t surprised when I heard nothing regarding a diagnosis for 2 full days. -

Saw this thread and figured I would add to it with what MIGHT be a relevant post. Had my ‘21 Sierra 1500 Elevation towed to my dealer after it basically just “failed” while routinely driving this past weekend. They have had it since Monday, gave no updates/diagnosis and just today mentioned LIFTERS as a possible culprit. I had several dash lights/icons (parking brake, engine, parking assist, and SERVICE ESC) illuminate while the truck made a clicking noise and sounded very labored and heavy….I pulled over, shut it off, etc…..and finally called my dealer service center….they said to drive it the final 5 miles to my home and call GMC Roadside Assistance……which brings me to today and the mentioning of “lifters”…..I’ll continue to monitor this site and this thread for further info/ideas/experiences/etc. Thanks to all for sharing your thoughts. -

Awesome.....really appreciate your help. I also had a hard time deciding....but seeing them on your truck convinced me that’s what I want. I just ordered a pair and I might ask my Line-X guy if he can put a coat on them before installation.....I think he usually charges $250 for coating a pair of running boards, but I’m gonna see if he can lower that since these Dominators won’t require any real prepping/taping/etc....the Line-X should make them impervious to New England weather conditions so we’ll see. Thanks again. -

Thx Wakinvol. So just to confirm, those are the GoRhino D6 Dominators in your pic? Just want to make sure cuz I’m definitely leaning towards them....they look awesome on your truck. Looks like they’re snug to the body and don’t hang too low....and they don’t stick out too much (when looking from behind the truck)? Really appreciate your input. -

Thanks HoosierZ.....great looking truck....that blue is beautiful. I’m definitely kicking around aluminum options as well....winters here are brutal with the amount of salt they throw around. -
Thank you for that.....I saw it earlier when I started reading this string and it is VERY informative....your pics REALLY assist in the understanding of the issue. I certainly hope this process fixed your water woes......and thanks to great posts like yours I’ll be asking specific questions when I bring my truck in for the window replacement next week.

Thx amigo.....I’m definitely considering those......and I added the GoRhino D6 Dominator to my list as well.....just not sure if they “stick out” too much (if I look from behind the truck, is the 6” inch width highly visible?)....I’m gonna look at more pics of everything. It looks like my current Westin ProTraxx 4s give me a narrow look but it’s because they sit so low.....too low for my liking. -
This is precisely what I thought...to the point where i have already been contacting local auto glass shops. A couple have actually told me they “won’t touch” my issue because it’s a brand new vehicle and still in the warranty period......????.......why exactly an after-market shop would care about that is beyond me......I, the owner, assume all responsibility for what’s done to my truck so add that to my list of things to scratch my head over. I’m gonna see how the replacement slider process goes in a few days at the dealership .......but I will DEFINITELY continue looking for a local window shop that I feel can fix this specific issue forever with a one-piece, non -slider installation.....I honestly feel that’s the only thing that’s gonna work. Hope I’m wrong.
