I admit, I'm a bit frosty that a major chunk of functionality died at right about 30,000 miles and just past the warranty date. Dealer estimated ~ $800 to $1000 for a new telematics unit and programming.
If it were a pure safety issue then yes, I think it should be a recall. Our Ford Expedition has a recall on the backup camera since it is deemed as safety related, and I think that's a stretch given there's a perfectly functional rearview mirror. The telematics unit would be an even bigger stretch so no, I am not hanging my hat on a recall.
Here on this forum I wanted to know if this was a widespread issue and how people are dealing with it. I couldn't find much direct evidence, so I asked.
FWIW this morning I found quite a few telematics failure threads in the GM OnStar community. Seems like replacement telematics units aren't always available and that people are having issues getting them properly programmed.
