Hi all. Getting the right exhaust sound and performance on these trucks is one of the most perplexing upgrades I have done on a vehicle I have owned. You want loud? Easy, a number of options exist. Quiet? Easy, leave it stock. In between - with no chopper sound? That's where your problem begins...I had great difficulty achieving nirvana on this issue. Here is what I have done, good and bad.
Mistake #1 was using a good/honest, but run of the mill "muffler shop" to dial it in. I let them replace my factory muffler with a FM 40 replica (these are everywhere now a days with lots of brand names, or even brand-less). Left the flapper on. No pictures on this one. I found it had an annoying hum at all speeds, but no drone really. Start up sound great with the remote start. I wasn't satisfied. I felt like the truck wasn't running as good (less power - is this possible?) with this muffler.
Being a slow learner in general, I returned to the same shop and ask for one of their magnaflow replicas. They seemed offended I came back, but were polite enough overall I suppose. They had magnaflow knock-off's in an 18" offset, and also a 24" 5x8 oval stainless available, with 3" in and out, which I purchased. I looked it up when I got home and the magnaflow equivalent # is 12289. They charged me the difference. Their comments made me realize how little they knew about these vehicles, such as: the flapper is useless here in warm weather, it only works where its cold...the magnaflow is only for big trucks (not mine) with 6.0's...and other astounding observations.
Sadly, this "stainless" muffler already shows corrosion after a week, around the factory welds. The sound - back to stock, plain and simple. The straight through design seems better, but I couldn't tell if the truck was running better than stock.
Then...I discovered an actual performance exhaust shop, Top Gun Muffler in Ft Walton Bch. Wow. Drove an extra 40 miles or so, but it was worth it. Whole different crowd both in the shop and in the waiting room. Lesson: drive little farther if necessary. Lots of choices and in-depth knowledge.
I had them delete the resonator only, my idea (see pic), in hopes of a little more sound and perhaps having the sound behind me and not underneath the cabin. Still have the flapper. I was surprised how much louder the rez delete made it. It has a slight drone at 1500 rpm in V4, but no real noise in V8 mode unless accelerating. Good WOT sound. Much closer to what I was looking for. Its more of a V8 gurgle type of noise (truck stays in a low gear always, unless you're almost WOT, so its hard to achieve that quick V8 burst noise from the days of yore).
I'll run it for 6 months, if the drone annoys me I'll have them weld a small bullet type resonator in and be done with it. Wow, all this aggravation just trying to avoid paying for the GM Borla. Sorry for the excessive information, I'd rather give too much than too little. Hope this helps someone or at least provides a good laugh.
