new radio update recall N242435631
ember1205 replied to kickass audio's topic in 2019-2026 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
I'm not aware of any changes to the SOFTWARE that they are installing. The only thing that I know that has changed has been whether or not they do any software updates (i.e. radio) beyond the module. They updated the Infotainment system in my truck and it did fix a couple of issues, but I now have new problems that were actually supposed to have been fixed by this update. SMH And totally as an aside - what the hell is the point of offering a wireless charger in these trucks if it doesn't work? We took an hour's drive last night, using Waze / Android Auto, and my phone refused to stay in a charging state for most of the drive no matter what I did. Every so-called "fix" that has been offered is not an actual fix for whatever is wrong with this thing - it's clearly something related to how it interoperates with phones and there's no rhyme or reason to why the charging mode stops and there is no additional information available for the purposes of understanding the problem. -

Mine is showing Build Number full_gminfo37_gb-user 12 My kernel version is 4.19.255 And my security patch level is Feb 5, 2024 None of these are the most current ones and are ALL slightly older than ones posted by others in this thread. However, like you, my truck shows no updates available and I suspect that the specific builds that are newer that some other folks have is likely related to specific trim levels or features that they have that I do not. In other words, I don't like how GM handles their software and updates (they are HORRIBLE at this), but there's nothing I can do to force a newer build onto my truck so I'm good with it. -

The "Android version number" is the base operating system for the Infotainment system and is part of Android Automotive (which is NOT the same thing as Android Auto). Every time you start the truck, that software loads and shows you things like radio info, the clock, and anything else on the display but it also operates the radio, HVAC, parking sensors, stop/start, and a bunch of other stuff. It's actually fairly important to keep this up to date for general operation of all kinds of things as well as ensuring that the latest security patches are installed. -

I have also observed the proper fan behavior, but I still have audio drop-outs and am now plagues with the crackling audio (for what I hear from the other party) from a bluetooth phone call. I have the unit configured to NOT use the fast startup, forcing it to fully restart each time the truck is started and have noticed that the overall "time to ready" interval has gotten quite a bit longer. My updates are NOT to the most recent builds as has been shown by some others in this thread, but are to the prior builds from this year. There is no additional OTA showing available for me, either. -

Mine is a 2024 RST, but the build is 172 (not 175) and the Security Patch update date is something like Feb 2024. They do not all update to the exact same build for some reason, but it absolutely SHOULD be Android 12. -

Android Automotive is what runs the Infotainment. Google's software is now "the base" that everything else sits on top of instead of it being a specific "app" that would launch on top of the old base software when you connected an Android phone. The issue is that the base operating system for the prior Infotainments could do things like read back a text message that was sync'ed over Bluetooth while the systems of today will not do that unless you subscribe to GM's data package. It -will- still read out text messages that are received while the Android Auto functions are running, or by launching that function, but it's a level of complexity that is unnecessary and done solely to allow GM to make more money. -

No misunderstanding on my part... Android Automotive is the new "operating system" that GM has chosen for the Infotainment, replacing the previous software they had used. It offers direct integration of a few key Google apps like the assistant and Maps, but more importantly allows GM to push people harder towards the subscription services so that those features work. Android Auto was formerly a natively installed "app" (or function) on top of the old operating systems that supported device mirroring. Now, AA is essentially built into the Android Automotive software in the head unit. It does not work the same, but it's not excessively far off. In the past, AA was -never- required to be running or even CONNECTED for the system to be able to read incoming text messages. The change that GM has made has pushed all of that down into the AA app itself and that is the ONLY place it runs. Without a subscription, there is absolutely no way to get the Android Automotive aspect of the Infotainment system to read out an incoming text message, even though it will happily notify you about it. If you get that notification, you have to launch AA, go into the AA notifications, choose the message, and tap Play. And then you can't hear it because the volume level is so low it's basically inaudible. It's a horrible change that GM has shoved on us. -

Glad to know that there was a way for you to tweak it. Sounds like it was a little different than I may have guessed at (I had suspected you'd need to go into the Android Auto on the phone and set it to allow that app to be installed / mirrored on the Infotainment, but it appears it's a setting directly in the app itself). -

Clearly, I'm going to have to do more testing with mine now... What you described is how it USED to work in my 2015, it has NEVER worked in my 2024. Also, after my recall, I now have the static and popping in my radio from BT-connected phone calls. Thanks for breaking yet another function, GM! -

I have -NO- connectivity in my truck at all. Adding connectivity via WiFi hotspot on my phone proved useless for the most basic functions like being able to use the integrated Google Maps, so I turned it off. I'd be curious about the specific changes you made to get the audio readout for text messages to work. Right now, if I receive a text message, I get a notification "pop up" on the screen toward the upper left that shows that I received a message and there is an option to "Play" the message. I get an error on that every time I try. If I dismiss, I can go into my notification history to pull up any text that is unread and attempt to play it and get the same error. If nothing else, this is another case of a car maker doing a completely piss-poor job of documenting their systems. This is all trial and error and makes me not bother trying to use ANY of the stuff that my truck is capable of because it isn't documented ANYWHERE how to use it. -

There is no true Android Auto on my truck... GM moved to Android Automotive instead, directly integrating a few key functions right into the Infotainment so they can lock those to "subscription only" functionality without allowing the projected functionality from actual Android Auto like they did prior (and most automakers still do). -

Hmmm... I can get my audio system to "pass through" to my phone for voice commands by holding the button, but there's no way to tap the screen when a text comes in for it to "Play" the message back. That fails 100% of the time with an error about needing a subscription. Used to work flawlessly on my 2015. -

I'm sort of guessing / theorizing here, but it might at least lead you to a resolution for the RingCentral thing. This is an app, not "the phone". As a result, it would need to be supported via Android Auto, and you would likely need to enable its functionality within AA in order to be able to interact with it on the truck. It would very likely behave like an audio player as opposed to a phone device. -

Odds are, you have Android Auto in your truck, not Android Automotive which was released in the refresh models. -

That's exactly what I am saying. My 2015 had Android Auto as does my Camaro. Incoming texts are able to be read TO me, with no need to look at a screen, over the audio system. With the new trucks, GM has moved to Android Automotive which no longer mirrors the functions from your phone to the screen and instead uses more directly integrated functions within Android Automotive. In order to get the system to read an incoming text message to me, or use voice to send a reply, I have to pay GM for a subscription to their data services. Even if I opt to use my phone as a hotspot and connect the truck to it via WiFi, these functions are actively blocked. They ONLY work through the pay-for data services offered by GM and that is what I mean by blocking safety functions behind a pay-wall. They have forced me to either pay their monthly ransom or choose whether I wish to endanger my life (and others) by looking at a screen. -

GM has made a complete mess of the Android Auto experience by moving to Android Automotive. Their entire goal was to shift to a system that would require the OnStar subscription for data services in order to make all of that stuff work again, but they have instead hidden safety behind a paywall. The fact that I can no longer have the system read out my incoming text messages puts me in the position of having to decide if I'm willing to pick up my phone while driving instead of taking the safe method to use the readout function. I can't wait for GM to get nailed with ANOTHER class action lawsuit for doing more stupid crap like this, putting people's lives in danger instead of actively blocking safety functions that they had leveraged previously. -

Sigh. Had my truck at the dealer for the software update and the included oil change from new purchase. They fried the module, then had to order a brake booster for a squeak I reported. They had the truck a WEEK. Got it back on 10/4. Checked the info in the menus and see the build is 172.xxxx and not 175.xxxx I think nothing of it until I get an email from GM on 10/18 saying I still need a software update. Seriously? I am so tired of having to tell the dealership how to do their job... -

It might depend on location as to whether the temps are low enough for all features to activate with remote start or on vehicle start-up. My seat and wheel turned on yesterday when i started the truck, but the AUTO setting for the climate control did not engage the defrost function and the rear defrost also didn't turn on. It was in the mid-50's at the time. -

Alert has always been there. Not sure about the auto-braking in conjunction with it. -

Bought my 2024 in October of '23. There was an OTA update done shortly after. They had to reprogram the gateway module in January of this year but I do not know whether any software installed was any newer than what was already there. No updates were installed on mine until the recall work done last week. So, it's entirely possible that it was added from the OTA last year or the work done back in January and I just never saw it. Since there was no value when I looked at it, I suspected it may have been introduced in this latest work (since I KNOW that I had looked in that screen previously at some of the auto-braking options to turn off the forward collision auto braking. As an aside... I had a brand new Malibu as a loaner while my truck was in. There was a semi coming towards me in the other lane (40MPH road, yellow line only) and the car determined that auto braking was needed because it determined that the semi was a vehicle in front of me with its brakes on (it was in the other lane, but it was red). I hate auto-braking because it has misinterpreted things on me many times and put me in situations where it could have caused an accident instead of preventing one. -

Dealer had my truck for a full week this time around. They fried the Comm Gateway and had to source a new one, then they had to order parts to replace the brake slave cylinder. I had reported a rattle from the rear of the cab which, of course, they "couldn't duplicate." So I took the tech for a ride. He heard it, found it, and fixed it. Apparently, on the high-level trim, you can opt for heated rear seats. Since they use the same wiring harness in all of the trucks, that plug is just dangling there, bouncing off of the floor on the driver's side of the cab. I noticed that there is a setting for automatic braking with rear cross traffic which had no value - this may be a new setting? -

Hard to know for sure since it isn't clear what version of the software is flashed on these modules from the factory. Given that the recall has been expanded to include more vehicles from more model years, it's possible that it was originally introduced as an OTA and has maybe also been found on newer trucks if they were already flashed with the newer software from the factory. -

Right, but what I'm saying is my OTA went fine. Then things slowly deteriorated over the next 45 days with no indication of what was going on. The fix, ultimately, was to manually reprogram the gateway module because the software had been corrupted. When i say "define fail", I mean you have to look at the update as a whole. Just because things may have appeared to continue to operate correctly after an OTA doesn't mean that the OTA didn't cause an issue that hasn't (yet) reared its head. Impacts were very different for those that experienced noticeable issues. My truck wasn't 'bricked', but after a week at the dealer to try and fix a laundry list of complaints I had, they handed it back having found absolutely nothing (purely because there "were no codes") and it threw up all over itself halfway home with every possible error it could have thrown. THAT'S when they went "oh! those problems!" and actually did some troubleshooting to find the problems and fix them.
