You're actually more brave than I am. I have no interest in even checking for updates any more. -
Wireless Apple Carplay quits working
ember1205 replied to sigmonster's topic in 2020-2026 Silverado HD & Sierra HD
It would be nice if the OTA updates didn't constantly bork all kind of stuff on these trucks. I used the update function on my Camaro with good results. I have completely disabled the function on the truck because so many people have had so many problems and it is likely the cause of the software corruption that screwed so much stuff up in my truck. -
2024 Silverado RST Z71, 4x4 Crew Cab This truck has been one piece of odd/bad behavior after another, and after YET ANOTHER visit to the dealer for warranty repair, something new happened the other day. I was driving on a secondary road at around 30MPH. Slowed, pulled left to the turn lane, came to an almost complete stop before turning while waiting for oncoming traffic to turn into the lane entering the parking lot where I was going. Made the turn and was following about 15-20' back of the vehicle ahead of me, 8-10MPH, and heard a single "beep" as the front camera came on. That was it. Nothing else. I have the Pedestrian Braking set to be enabled but the collision alert stuff is disabled. 2100 miles on the truck and this is the first time this has happened. From what I can tell, this has nothing to do with any of the sensors in the truck and I'm at a loss for what the hell happened. I've previously brought the truck back to the truck to go over an EXTENSIVE list of issues including loss of communication with ABS module, indication of limp mode, indication to "service steering column lock" (which this truck doesn't have), the electronic parking brake setting itself VERY frequently on perfectly level ground, passenger side object detection not working reliably, and a host of other things. The dealer did essentially NOTHING until every error message the truck could throw occurred all at once (on my way home from the visit to fix all of the communications issues in the first place). When the truck shut itself down on my on my way home, I opened a GM case and it went right back to the dealer and spent ANOTHER week there. They ultimately claimed that the software in my Communication Gateway module was corrupted and had to be re-flashed. Since that visit, things have definitely been better, but some items have persisted and now this... Is this truck just loaded with gremlins or can this stuff ACTUALLY get fixed? I'm getting more and more frustrated with the hassle that this all represents and am losing confidence in the reliability of this truck more and more as the days wear on.

This may not actually be related at all, and I don't have the wiring diagrams to even BEGIN to try and determine if it is... But... On my 2015, I was experiencing this and it was always at its most irritating in high temps and low temps. If outside temps went down into maybe the low teens or below, it would appear. If the temps were in the 80's and higher, and the truck had been parked in the sun (dark gray), it would do this AT LEAST until I drove it a while and got the temp of the truck's sheet metal to drop a bit. What I found a little while later was that I developed the leak at the third brake light in the back of the cab that's fairly common - it presents itself as water staining on the headliner starting at the back of the cab. When I pulled the brake light assembly to replace the gasket, I found that the assembly was actually full of water. After thoroughly shaking the water out of it and putting it all back together, this message went away.

The feature is present in my Camaro, but generally worthless because it doesn't offer two different settings for it - one with the top up and one with it down. It's gone from my truck, but I'm more pissed that they removed the Auto Re-Lock function (truck locks itself back up if you unlock via fob and don't open a door within a couple of minutes). I've lost track of how many times I've found my truck unlocked because it's too easy to press the buttons on the new fob when it's in my front jeans pocket.

Wireless Apple Carplay quits working

Every single thing that I have encountered as a problem over the last ten years and three vehicles ultimately ties back to crappy software design. - On my Camaro, I couldn't leave a USB stick plugged in (for music) or it causes weird things to happen with BT connections to my phone. - Wireless charging in the truck sometimes stops working without warning. Removing phone and re-placing on the pad will start the process back up, but there's no rhyme or reason to how many times I have to do this before it KEEPS working. - OTA updates are literally bricking trucks in certain circumstances because GM is pushing the wrong software to certain vehicles and there's no check/balance as part of the install process to ensure that it's intended for the vehicle it lands on. - In my last truck (2015 Silverado), clicking the button on the wheel to change radio stations required waiting for the info banner to appear in the dash before it would change and play the next station. UNLESS, you squeezed the gain control on the trailer brake to cause ITS dialog to appear. WIth that in the display, radio stations changed immediately with no delay. - You can't auto-start Android Auto or Apple CarPlay -AND- use the Trusted Device feature on your phone to unlock your driver profile. - You can't adjust the maximum startup volume until you create a driver profile for yourself. And even then, it always loads Guest at initial start, so you need to return to THAT profile to set the value it sets to BEFORE it switches to your profile. And even then, it typically doesn't work. GM is so focused on "tech for tech's sake" that they are leaving out the part about making sure it WORKS in real-world scenarios... -
Volume Changes by itself

The 2023+ have a TOTALLY different Infotainment system and that setting is no longer there anywhere. -
Why would an LT4 from a Camaro, which was ONLY available in the ZL1 and came with a factory supercharger, have a Maggie on it now? Good luck...

Wireless Apple Carplay quits working

I have been working with technology for well over 30 years and I can confidently state that no one has ever corrected an "intermittent bug." Unless you have the ability to reliably reproduce the issue, there is no way to test whether any steps taken corrected the problem or not. I feel your pain as I have my own list of intermittent issues on my 2024, including: - EPB sets itself roughly 1 in 3 times parking on level ground on average. According to what is implied from the manual, this is far too often. - Wireless charging starts working then stops unexpectedly. - Passenger side detection system unable to detect vehicles of various size (including semis). - Radio startup volume limit doesn't work and radio is far louder than max volume setting. -
Pretty sure, at least in the current form, LFP batteries can't actually be used for starting and operating motor vehicles (cars, trucks, RV's, motorcycles, etc.) anyhow as they don't provide the heavy amperage required for cranking over a motor. As far as brands, you can pretty much go with what you're comfortable with, really. Just be sure you get AGM and at -least- the CCA rating of the battery that's in there. You'll likely find that most of the brands that are sized correctly for your truck will be similar in price, so you could use cost as deciding factor. Batteries are only made by a few manufacturers and are all pretty on par with each other. Some folks have used Costco in the past because they sold Interstate and offered a great warranty / return., but that has changed and the Interstate warranty is what presides now (and there's not really a cost savings going through Costco).
-
My general thoughts: Why -would- you choose a LFP battery over AGM? AGM is better suited for cold weather (especially freezing and below) use and will easily handle the high CCA output your truck needs for Stop/Start functionality. AGM is costly enough, but I have gotten 5 years out of them fairly easily. I have one in my car and keep it on a maintainer when it's parked in the garage (which is a lot). Current battery is going on three years with zero issues. Personally, I would be suspicious of the potential issues that could arise by changing out the main electrical supply in the truck for all of the electronics and monitoring systems as well as being 100% compatible with the charging system in the truck. LFP batteries are generally marketed to those looking to use them in solar setups, EV's, RV's, and boats for specific situational use.

Agree that OP needs to learn the engine naming. The LT4 is a supercharged engine in the Corvette, Camaro, and Blackwing... 640HP+ depending on specific tuning. It shares some commonality with the LT1, but both 6.2L engines are available only in cars. And with the vast amount of technology in today's vehicles, the days of the generic "LS1 swap" are gone. If the engine was never originally available in the vehicle, you are going to spend a TON of time and money to convert it, if you can even get it done correctly.

Right.. you're reading it as "you might have ports with data" and "it might work" but the intent is more "You may have multiple ports" (instead of just one) and "you have the option of using these ports to play music from a supported drive". GM writes documentation about as well as they write software...

Android Auto Error 2024 Sierra
ember1205 replied to NavyVette's topic in Troubleshooting, Warranty & Recalls
Assuming you're using wireless AA, try completely unpairing everything for Bluetooth AND Android Auto (you'll want to use the Search function in settings on the phone to find the AA controls and delete the truck). Power cycle the phone, close and lock the truck. When you restart the pairing process, have WiFi on the phone disabled and use a good quality cable to connect it to the truck. See if your experience changes. If not, back to the dealership as there is either something corrupt or there actually is a software update that you need that isn't advertised OTA (also, OTA updates are causing severe issues with a number of trucks - I've completely disabled them on my Silverado after it caused corruption in my messaging broker module in the truck and I got a CEL at 500 miles combined with just about every warning message on the dash possible). -
External CD player options?
ember1205 replied to Pale Rider's topic in Modifications, Wheels & Tires
While this is true, it can be a PITA to decide how you want to sort the music to the various sticks. And it can be tricky to set up various playback methods other than "random" across everything. I've ripped everything to disk years ago and copy stuff onto smaller drives to take with me in the vehicles. My IDEAL solution was an iPod Touch that I left permanently connected to my 2015 Sliverado, but the new trucks no longer support operating them (touch devices - phones and iPods - do not support being accessed purely as a storage device and there are no operating controls that can correctly communicate with the iPod software). -
Wireless Apple Carplay quits working

It isn't "obvious". If you're actually tapping on CP and getting the message you posted after tapping Connect, then the problem is that the Infotainment system doesn't understand that the connected iPhone (which it only knows is an iPhone by name, not because of any hardware recognition) is capable of CarPlay. Take it back to the dealership and have them update ALL of the software in your truck that isn't current. If that does not help, then you'll likely need a case w/ GM to get them to dig deeper in and possibly replace the Infotainment system. -

If you want to use CP, why are you tapping on the AA icon? -

Stabilizer may help to prevent the issue from getting worse, but I don't believe it will help to clear any buildup that's already there. A fuel system cleaner would be more adept at that. One could even add a heavy dose of SeaFoam to the gas. I've use SeaFoam in small engines to clear buildup in the carbs by putting a few oz in a half tank of gas, running it for five minutes, then shutting it down to sit overnight. After that, I run the rest of the tank dry and continue to add 1oz per tank going forward for a few more tanks of fuel. Seems to help substantially.

what's everyone paying for oil changes?
ember1205 replied to shudog's topic in 2019-2026 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
it's in their best interest to not fix the problem. They bill GM for work they never actually do and you'll be back to get it looked at again on GM's dime. They're getting like the government and insurance claims - deny 'tlll they die... Keep saying no until you give up and go away. -

Sales has never been able to give truthful answers. Their motivation has always been to provide "whatever information will close the deal", facts be damned. Service departments no longer troubleshoot. Bring them a problem, and they look for a code. No code? No problem. If there is a code, they look for a related TSB. No TSB? No problem. This is exactly what I ran into a month ago when I brough my truck in to have 18 different, specific complaints looked at. They fixed nothing... even the things they claimed they fixed, they didn't fix. The only two items that were actually addressed were panel gap problems handled by the body shop. I specifically told them to set my tire air pressure correctly as it hadn't been right since day one. I even showed them the OnStar email that was sent at the time of delivery showing the tires were set too low. The returned the truck with the pressures not set consistent to each other, still too low all around, and the work order stated that the pressure had fallen due to low temps and that it was basically "my fault" for not monitoring / adjusting. I was outright pissed and made them change the wording on the work order after a debate with the service manager about it. Both of my front windows has residue from a suction cup used during assembly. Body shop manager (who I know) told me he knew about it, knew how to address it. They returned it with the work order stating "cleaned windows" and they stated that they used SprayWay cleaner. I took them outside and showed them that the problem was still there and they did NOTHING with their half-assed attempt. Made them actually put it through the body shop manager's hands to clean it correctly. I complained about specific defects, including where THEY had cut me floor mats. They indicated "compared to other vehicles on the lot with the same trim, no problem found." As long as they break them all the same, they'll all be the same. Sigh. Another defect I specifically took the time to show to the shop foreman when I dropped it off. They never addressed it. Same bogus issue as above and now I have to bring the truck back AGAIN after they finally ordered the damned part. $56k buys you nothing but headaches and arguments now.
