  1. What (whose) phone is it talking about; On Star phone or yours? I never subscribed to it but it was installed on the vehicle, the robot voice came on a couple times but it shut up when I didn't answer. Maybe it's looking for your phone?
  2. Maybe a Chicom starter ? You sure did some first class TS! Congrats!
  3. I think the moral of the story is to remove the carpet when cleaning, this seems like a lot of effort but who wants codes? I hung my carpet over the fence to dry for 3 days, prolly longer than necessary but I had no problems....
  4. Press and hold (I think) the one of the buttons on the steering wheel. On my '06 Avi it gave only instant mileage (that was the impression) it never changed unless I changed it. I thought it was useless but why design it that way; so I'm not sure it worked correctly or I was wrong.....
  5. First, if you're a amateur that was some fine trouble shooting! Except the replacing the starter part... Back in the day a starter was $30.00, not such a lot of money even then; but today replacing good parts (especially an electric part as in most cases you can't return it) is more serious. I am in agreement with you about a weak ground. This family of vehicles is known for corroded grounds. On my '06 there was a ground point used by several circuits underneath the truck essentially below the driver's feet. I cleaned it all up and put some dielectric grease on all surfaces. When I'm under the vehicle for any reason I try to remember to check that ground. GM has data showing the locations of grounds somewhere in the repair manuals. A word on GM manuals; not all systems are covered in 1 manual, there are (or were at one time) several manuals, there was a shop manual, a transmission manual, and (I think) an electrical manual so don't look in the shop manual, look for an electrical manual. I'm sure the great dealer mechanics we are privileged to have with us on this board can and will shine some light on your issue as well as explain about the different manuals thing. Again, that was some great trouble shooting you and your brother did! Congrats on getting so close to the issue!
  6. Drive It Forever: Your Key to Long Automobile Life by Robert Sikorsky 1 quart per 1k miles can be "normal" oil consumption.According to Drive It Forever: Your Key to Long Automobile Life by Robert Sikorsky Get this guy's book, it's amaze you. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=drive+it+forever+book&crid=O8IJEHNLV232&sprefix=drive+it+forever%2Caps%2C583&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_2_16 Why? Because the valve guide seals (if you have them) are designed to let some oil pass to lube the valve stems. Naturally that oil oozes on down past the stems, over the back of the valves, and into your cylinders where upon startup it gets burned and then you got your standard blue smoke on start up. Imagine that.
  7. How CAm became so knowledgeable; prolly the HARD WAY!
  8. Yeah, check the bulbs, apparently they provide the resistance for the flasher to work. I know using LEDs on a vehicle designed for incandescent bulbs you'll need a resistor to make the flasher work. I suppose the flasher could be FUBAR too.
  9. While I am not a GM engineer I'm pretty sure the floor pan for that truck is the same for all models of Silverado built that year so you could upgrade your seats at the local bone yard to seats from a better trim level OR you can buy Ricarro or some other exotic brand seats.
  10. So, what's the scoop on your brake system?
  11. I found graphite search for a 99 Silverado at https://www.theseatshop.com/
  12. That sounds like a master cylinder gone bad. Or a major brake line failure in both circuits....
  13. And isn't that one of the symptoms being discussed?
  14. Well' wouldn't the low pedal be caused by thin brake linings when no one was keeping the reservoir filled?
  15. I'd replace that component with the wrong size screw, then AFTER testing all the hoses for leaks look for cracked rubber hose, split hose, cracked split, broken vacuum fittings. Any question about the hose or component, replace it with a new one and include clamps to insure integrity of the vacuum signal. Wire (zip) ties an make great claps if you have a pliers like tightener for them. Check your local Harbor Freight for this tool.
  16. Maybe a different brand of plugs or plug wires is the fix, plug wires don't just "come off" a plug any more; haven't done that in 30 years. Most plug wires are really tough to get off whether they have been installed for 5 years or 5 minutes....
  17. Quite a mystery; you have to love it when a reputable source like all data doesn't reference a component the manufacturer says was used and there isn't any proof it was ever there. I'd call Chevy Customer service at 1 800 222 1020; maybe they can steer you in the right direction.
  18. The master cylinder reservoir is full with the brake pedal low because some one kept topping off the brake fluid. the fluid level decreases as the brake pads wear because the caliper pistons travel further as the the friction pad wears down, that's all completely normal, but also why you should not top off the brake fluid but using the low level as a indicator that there is a brake job that wikll need to be done in the near future.
  19. I have an 04 same same. I don't like it, you sit too close to the floor, the cab isn't as big or as nice as the 1st generation truck have. You can still get a hard bed cover for it on Amazon. You can't get a factory or aftermarket floor mat and it doesn't tow much. It gets worse mileage than my '06 5.3; (it weighs 6,000 lbs, the S 10 weighs 4klbs.) Avalanche. The 4 X 4 just quit, I haven't looked into it yet as there are other priorities right now. Paying some one to r and r and rebuild the tranny is gonna be $3k. The 4L 60 E has some weak parts. The engine bay is really crowded so changing plug, cap, rotor and wires is going to be a PIA. It has a remote mounted oil filter and a interesting engine oil cooler, it needs one because the engine bay is so crowded. The air cleaner has a snorkel on it that uses a adhered (You can't replace the gasket, you get a new snorkel) Maybe donate it to the local high school....get a write off if you have enough to itemize, most of us don't.
  20. Some folks are never satisfied! (#1) is the big toe bone, the big toe bone is connected to the (#2) The foot bone, the foot bone is connected to the (#3) the little leg bone, the little leg bone is connected to the big leg bone.... You get the idea....
  21. No such thing as a "Decent Price" in this economy.
  22. You were in the "Twilight Zone"....
