  1. Sorry to hear about you troubles......you must have had one of the early build models. It seems to me that a lot of the issues that were present with the early production models were rectified on later build units. I was very near the end of the 2014 ordering "window", and my truck was not actually built until late June 2014, and so far I haven't found a single thing that I could complain about. It's a little scary, because usually you can find something. Anyway, this tells me they got their act together, and your new 2015 should be a gem. Are you going to do the GM Borla exhaust on your new one? REV
  2. Absolutely right.....sorry about that. How long did you haved the "Borla" system on your truck before you got rid of it? In that time, did you notice any "Break-in" period, and was there any change in the tone or sound level? Lastly........why did you get rid of your truck. REV
  3. 15LTZZ71.......I've read a number of your posts and if I remember correctly, you returned your "Non-GM Borla" system and got a full refund. Did you eventually go with a GM Borla, or did you end up with something else? REV
  4. I agree with you Jay.......most won't care about the small hit you will take to the fuel mileage. I was very happy with my MF system on my last truck, and I do agree, they are a very well made system. Hey if it's good enough for "Chip Foose" it must be good. In all honesty, it was just a little bit louder than I would have preferred, and I'm pretty sure at the time I had their largest muffler, which would have been the quietest they offered.. My son has the truck now, and he loves the sound. I think the level of sound you prefer has a direct relationship as to how old you are. And you are certainly correct about the pricing. The Borla isn't cheap, but what is when you are forced to order it through GM. As I said, I'm sure the GM Borla won't be aggressive enough for a lot of the younger fellows, but it seems to me to be just that little bit quieter, which is my preference. REV
  5. Good question.......my dealer installed one system on a stock truck just to showcase the exhaust. Apparently, it doesn't seem to take very long and someone falls in love with it and it's sold. So they do up another one for stock. Good marketing strategy. Possibly you could ask your dealer to look up any of his customers that have purchased the system, and they might put you in touch with them. Just customer service to me, and it may help them sell another system. I'm sure anyone that has one would be more than happy to show it off to you. REV
  6. Yes, from what I have read, if you turn off the AFM, the V4 drone will be gone. The only problem is you are also defeating the purpose of AFM, that being improving fuel mileage. Probably no big deal, but I'm sure a lot of development went into AFM, and it seems a shame not to take advantage of it. It seems you get the best of both worlds with the GM Borla system. Without tuning out the V4 mode as you have done, I'm sure there will be a certain amount of V4 drone with any system. Some more than others. REV
  7. Sounds like myself, I wouldn't have even been into the 2014 if it not for my son, who kept pestering me about selling him my 07. It also had nothing wrong with it and only had about 24,000 miles on it. I figured someone should be putting miles on it. It wasn't doing it any good just sitting in the garage. Now I can let my 2014 sit in my garage.........oh, my son's already planting the seeds about when he gets the new one. REV
  8. Thanks Chuck, I didn't think the last generation of trucks had the exhaust valve. I was like you, really thought I was going to enjoy the "quiet" ride this time. That was until I heard that GM Borla system. I had the same experience with my MF system on my 07, the V4 drone was much louder than in the stock mode. To me, mine wasn't really all that bad, and it didn't bother me that much. I think everyone's different when it come to what frequencies bother them, to some it's OK, to others the exact same sound is unbearable. The ride itself in the cab with the Borla system is quiet, the only time you hear anything even slightly, is when you get on the throttle. Then it's just a low V8 rumble, just letting you know there are more than 6 guys rowing under the hood. In my opinion, to get this sound, you have to spring for the GM Borla system, which comes with the valve and bypass pipe built in. A tad on the expensive side, but not going this route I'm sure will result in some degree of the V4 Drone. The only other muffler I have read good things about, is the Dynamax VT (I think that's what it's called) which apparently also has it's own valve built right into the muffler's shell. Just a warning, if you want to leave your truck stock, don't under any circumstances have a listen to the GM Borla System. It had me on the cold start up, not to mention the one I was in had both dual outlet pipes exiting on the passenger side, with the polished "Borla" tips......just looked way cool to me. REV
  9. We really didn't go very far on the test drive, but to be honest, I really couldn't hear anything inside the cab. There really wasn't anywhere we could get the truck up to highway speed, where the V8/V4 transitions are most noticeable, but I couldn't hear anything from the exhaust unless under acceleration. I'm sure a lot of the cab sound control, is just a result of the 2014's being so quiet in the first place, so it's very hard to tell what it sounds like outside. I had a magnaflow system on my last truck (a 2007 LT 5.3) and the exhaust sound was a lot more noticeable in the cab in similar driving conditions. I had a Muffler Shop install my MF system which was not a complete cat back from MF, but just a MF muffler, and "custom" bent piping, built right there onsite. Even with this system, I really didn't find the drone/resonance/helicopter sound or whatever you call it all that offensive. It was there, but I sort of considered it an "audible" alert that the engine was transitioning from one mode to another. It almost seems that this V8/V4 drone/etc etc is more of an issue with the 2014's. I don't think that "flapper valve" thingy was part of the 07-13 truck exhaust system. Possible in GM's quest for "Quietness" this valve was installed just to control that aspect, because in the previous generation of trucks, you could hear the exhaust note change slightly even without a performance muffler set-up, and in a lot of the Automotive reviews of the 2014, often a point is made that the V8/V4 transition is imperceptible. Anyway, from the sound in the cab of that 2014, I wouldn't expect any issues at all with the V8/V4 thing. I will say again, that I think a lot of the "Young whippersnappers" might find the GM Borla system to be on the "Tame" side. As "Daniel T" has posted, the system does seem to "Break-in" to the point where there will be a little more sound, which is fine by me. I wouldn't mind that, as long as the "in-cab" noises are controlled, which appears will be the case. Oh and on another note.......my parts guy called, and apparently the Canadian GM distributors are "Out of Stock" on the Borla system, and it looks like it will take 10 days for my system to arrive, as it must be shipped up from the US..........damn. Oh well, a few more days won't be that bad. REV
  10. Well I gave in.........went over to my dealer this morning and ended up ordering the GM Borla package for my truck. He had a new truck on the lot, to which they had installed the Borla package, so I was able to get an real life preview of the system. Upon cold startup, there is a really nice "Bark" from the pipes, which quickley softens. Even when reving the engine while in "park" there is a nice expected V8 growl from the pipes, but really nothing you wouldn't class as "music" We went for a short ride, and the cabin noise was non-existent until under acceleration, and even then, the sound to me was exactly what a V8 should sound like. The manufacturers are so obsessed with having a "Quiet" vehicle, the have completely forgot about the folks who prefer to hear their V8 in action. Anyway, I was very impressed, and have to say this is the ticket for anyone that is looking for something just a bit louder than stock, with a nice bite under acceleration, and a quiet cabin. The sound may be a little subdued for some that are looking for more of an aggressive tone, but for "Old Fellers" like me, it fills the bill perfectly. A little more "Pricey" than having a muffler shop build you a system, but to me, finally getting the sound I've been chasing in my last two trucks, it's well worth it. I decided to go with the twin pipe side exit, which to me seems just a little more of a modern look. I also didn't like the fact that the Borla exhaust pipe itself, being only 2.25", looks kinda' funny when it upsizes to the 4" split rear tips. Not a real big deal but my last 2 Silverados had the split twin pipes out the back, so it's time for a change. They will be ordering the kit today, so hopefully I'll have it installed before the end of the week. Thanks for everyones input, this thread was very helpful in making my decision REV
  11. Does anyone know what Borla muffler is the one included in the GM package? REV
  12. OK......looks like I'm slowly giving in and will probably be going with the GM Borla System. Pretty pricey, compared to Flowmaster and Magnaflow, but from what I have read here, the Borla system sounds great, with low cabin noise and virtually none of that dreaded "Drone" you usually end up with in some form or another. I had a Magnaflow system on my last truck (07 LT 4x4 Ext Cab 5.3). This truck also had the cylinder deactivation deal, and you could definetely hear the exhaust tone change when it dropped into V4 mode, but the sound to me wasn't really offensive, I wouldn't call it a drone, it just made it noticeable when the engine switched modes. Anyway, on the 2014's, with a performance exhaust system, is this V4 "drone" more of an issue than it was with the 2007 thru 2013 models? Finally, it looks like I will have 2 choices with the GM Borla system.......twin pipes out the back, or dual pipes out the passenger side where the factory exhaust is now. I've always liked, and gone for the twin pipes out the back before, but this time, I'm sort of leaning towards the dual side exit...........what's your preference, and why???? Do you think either exit location would make any difference to the sound levels inside the cab? REV
  13. Thanks for the reply Daniel......I was hoping to maybe save a few bucks if I do end up going the GM Borla route.........anyway, buying a second OEM tip would probably have been almost as much as the two Borla's I would need. REV
  14. I'm considering the GM Borla system for my 2014 Z71 with the 5.3. I told myself when I ordered the truck that this time I was going to stay with the "Quiet Tones" and NOT add a performance exhaust. Well it looks like that plan may be out the window, as I'm really digging the GM Borla system. Anyway, my question is, I ordered that ridiculosly overpriced Chrome Exhaust tip from GM when I ordered the truck...........I ordered the thing partly just to deter me from going with a cat back system, by having already invested in that overpriced OEM tip, it would make me think twice before dropping any money on an exhaust system. Again my plan doesn't seem to be working, Im sort of longing for that rumble I had with my last one. Since the tips do not come with the GM Borla system, does anyone know if the OEM Polished Exhaust tip I already have, will fit the Borla outlet pipes? Not a real big deal, but if it will, I may be able to just buy one other OEM tip, rather than having to ante up for 2 Borla tips. I appreciate any response REV
  15. I think they do make them for regular cab models. I'm sure when I was first shopping for my truck, there was a regular cab, 2014 on my dealer's lot, that had the 4" bars on it. REV
  16. Someone quite a ways back asked for a pic of the factory 4" round bars. I didn't see a response, so since I have the 4" bas on my truck her are a few pics. I've had the 6" flat steps on my last few trucks, so I decided this time to go with the 4" round ones. Seems to me that in previous years, the tubular OEM side bars were not 4", but somewhat smaller in diameter. Anyway, they are very solid, and seem like they will hold up very well. I think they look good, and I'm happy with them. REV
