Shake or Vibration Issues
GMCJOE17 replied to Silver space ship's topic in Troubleshooting & Recalls
Today was the day that ultimately cured the vibration issue for good and although somewhat bittersweet, I went from one of the roughest rides to the smoothest I have ever had. I wish I could have sold the set of brand new Michelin tires and OEM "20" rims to someone prior to the trade but it was one of those deals that just made sense. I do still have a 8 ft 3 fold hard bed cover for the few who have a long one that will go cheap! Happy Trails - GMC/LEX/Joe17 -
Shake or Vibration Issues

I've put 500 Miles on my truck since I got it back and all is still ok with it and today I got a check from GM with a letter that said it was a "Goodwill adjustment". So with the truck back and everything settled with GM, I am now free to decide if I will stay in this truck with 18'500 miles on it or cut my losses and trade it for something more... eh.. stable? I think the only other truck I would be comfortable buying would be a Toyota Tundra. I just don't have a warm fuzzy feeling and fear this headache will come back and to be honest, Life's too short! I've been a GM guy for most of my life, 1st car was a 69 Caprice, I've owned many GM's and as for trucks... a 04 Z71 Avalanche and a 11 LTZ Avalanche both had more than 1/2 dozen recalls and had little issues that were never quite right. The 2011 had a windshield howl on the highway that they could do nothing about and the 04 had trammie issues and spent a lot of time at the dealer. Neither of those issues were as annoying as the vibration on this 2017. I wont go as far as saying that I wont own another GM in my life but this experience has been a pretty big disappointment overall. I do feel for everyone still going through the process of identifying the vibration issue and hope that they will figure some kind of true fix to this mess other than replacing tires until it goes away. OLVIM, I feel your pain brother, glad that you are back in your truck and I know its weird being out of it for so long you almost forget what it was like driving it. At first you are over sensitive to any bump or poor road surface, I keep expecting it to come back and wonder what will bring it back... when the heavy gas tank is empty, a cold night, a warm day? I've driven mine almost 500 miles since I got it back (mostly highway) and all is still good. Little did we know that when GM designed the K2's this is what was on the white board: GMCJoe -

Good point! I'm sure GM would have a lame excuse back on that too. -

My thoughts exactly Rosco. GM makes a truck that is hypersensitive to tires and then wont warranty the best tires. This is also why I wanted to go to arbitration to be able to throw that in their faces. -

All warranty Bill, and yes I took it to 90 and it was perfect. The crappy thing about GM is they covered the Bridgestones under warranty but refused the Michelin's. The dealer told me they ate the tires on this one (which they got the set of Bridgestones so they came out ok). -

Dearmosd, The dealers are at the mercy of GM for all warranty work. It has to be approved for them to get paid for warranty labor and parts. Luckily I had a really good service manager who made the world of difference in my case and I also shared the information with him on what I read on line on this site and others. If I were you I would start with the service manager, if you feel you are getting a run around then turn up some heat by placing a complaint with the BBB (https://www.bbb.org/). They will then contact GM who will assign your truck a case number and contact the dealer directly. When doing so, you will need to upfront state your case on what you are looking for whether it be a lemon law case or reimbursement for any out of pocket costs you spent on getting the problem corrected. The dealer will then have 14 days to correct the problem or report to GM that they can not repair it and then the lemon law will come into play. In my case I bought my truck used so I didn't qualify for the lemon law but I pushed for arbitration and they settled before it went. Good luck and I'll follow your posts for sure! Joe -

Bill, I think it was a mix of the Driveshaft balancing (it was reported as out of balance but I never got to see the data on how much) and the better class of tires. Its like night and day on the highway now.. smooth as silk! Joe -

So I got to the dealer after work today and the SM told me to go ahead and take it on the highway and come back to make sure I was satisfied. Jumped in and all seems good @ 70 only truck normal bounce.. @ 75 same and @ 80 mph all good. Got back to the dealer and did a once around and did notice a door ding right in the middle of my drivers door. He got me some touch up so I will have to do a little sanding in the spot first. Other than that, one of my nice tire caps was missing but he threw a new one on and even had a porter fill the tank up for me which was nice. (but they did rip through what I had in it) I am happy it rides like a normal truck but am a tad worried that this issue could return as the tires wear or the truck gets more miles on it. Time will tell on both. I am thinking of throwing some Bilstein's on the back to control the 8 ft bed a little better on the highway. The dealer did give me some sand bags (same bags GM made them buy in troubleshooting the truck). He didn't have the paperwork ready but he said he will email it to me when its done. I imagine 5+ weeks of this thing clocked up some hefty GM billable hours. He did tell me that GM wouldn't approve the Michelin's so the dealer ate them. (Which means they ripped them off another truck on the lot and threw the Bridgestone's on it) My poor rims have been through road force balance hell with the multiple sets of tires on and off of them in the last few weeks. More to come when I get the paperwork, glad to have the truck back after this long too. Joe -

So I get a text from the dealer late yesterday saying the truck is repaired and is smooth on the highway. I said "So the Michelins did the trick"? He said YES. I said great, I'll see you tomorrow afternoon when I get off work. But going back in time and knowing the amount of tires they put on the truck including the original set, the set of tires and OEM rims I bought, a set from a brand new truck on the dealers lot, and a brand new set of Bridgestone's that were perfectly balanced to 7 LBS each per the SM it makes me wonder if in fact it was the recently installed and balanced driveshaft that was the fix and the tires are a cover up? As much as I appreciate the Michelins, (Great tires) when he told me the driveshaft was "slightly out of balance" and that they swapped tires from another new truck and it repaired it, I stared to wonder because the timing is what is questionable. Wondering now when I pick it up what the paperwork will actually show completed after a month and 1/2 in the shop. One things for sure, Chevy needs to change their motto from "LIKE A ROCK" to "MORE SENSITIVE THAN A WOMAN". “Hallelujah! Holy sh*t! Where's the Tylenol?” (Chevy Chase) -

Tires were continentals that they said they replaced with Bridgestones and force balanced them all to 7lbs. Now they are installing Michelin's as a hail mary to curing the issue. Its been so long that I lost faith in just about everyone working on it including GM and the poor service they barely provided. It should not take a month and a 1/2 to fix ANY problem on a new(er) automobile. -

Barak, at this point I am wondering if the set they put on from the other truck was actually out of balance and the possibility of the trucks balancing issue and the tire they took from the other truck had balancing issues and they worked against each other and it corrected the vibration. Don't know but I give up. -

Got a call from the Service manager at the dealer. He said they got the driveshaft back and he said the driveshaft company said it was slightly out of balance. They put the driveshaft back on and it still vibrates. He said he took another set of tires off another truck and put them on mine (AGAIN) and the vibration went away. He told me he is going to order a brand new set of Michelin tires for it, the best tires for this truck under warranty and he said of that does not correct it then its the rims. I said you would figure the rims would have shown any imbalance on the balancer. He said the machine will not show where the tires bolt to the truck. I said I find it strange that the original rims did it, the set I bought did it, the set you already swapped from a NEW truck did it, and now you changed them with another truck and it went away? Sitting here SMH and fed up with the entire thing. -

Heard back from the service manager at the dealer, he said the drive shaft company told him my driveshaft was a little out of balance and is ready. They should have it back and in the truck hopefully tomorrow. Have fingers crossed that this takes care of it and this can all finally be over. I have a case open and although I don't qualify for the lemon law because I bought it used, today we have agreed/settled the case pre-arbitration. (That's all I can say about it other than I feel it was fair) Now lets see if I get my truck back before week #6 at the dealer (Friday) If they say it still vibrates then the only other thing I can imagine would be a torque converter. -

The service manager at my dealer told me the same thing about the road force balance numbers. He put new tires on my truck and kept sending the new ones back until he got all 4 road forced to 7lbs each. It didn't fix the vibration, they replaced the ring and pinion and that didn't fix the vibration, its at a driveshaft shop now getting balanced and I am crossing my fingers that will be the fix but time will tell. GM is really hush hush about the vibration issues and I have to believe that they not only know about it, they are handling each one case by case blaming it on tires when in fact I would guess that 95% are not a tire issue. Customers are really at the mercy of finding a good dealer that will take on the vibration trouble and run with it. A perfect example is when I took mine to the dealer the first time they told me it was my tires and to come get my truck.. was said pretty rude. I complained on line on their site trashing them as a poor service dealership on social media. I then took it to another dealership who had it for a total of an hour and said they couldn't find a problem. (they wanted nothing to do with it knowing it was the vibration issue) Funny part is as I was leaving the 2nd crap dealership the service manager of the first one called me and apologized and asked me to give him another chance at repairing the truck. I agreed and here we are 5 weeks later and they are on the driveshaft as the main problem. I have to give it to this service manager as he has really been trying to get it corrected going head to head with GM engineers and tech dept. Good luck with your truck Olvim -

I guess GMCustomerService gave up on this thread 2 years ago. I remember when I started reading this crazy 800+ page diary of a vibrator that they were replying to people with the issue and I did some reading and they stopped replying back in 2016. Internal GM Gag Order? -

I never thought you were blowing smoke Bart, I was just at the mercy of the dealer going through GM's idiotic "lets Fix It" Flow Chart. I am glad they are finally on the shaft prior to me getting the shaft. -

Agree, the angle of the shaft to the rear end is an issue plus the cheap Aluminum shaft with Cardboard core is another issue. Trying to balance the tires to PERFECTION may help the balance issue but it wont solve it. Anything GM can do to take the spotlight off the driveshafts and save money you know they are going to do. Imagine a recall on ALL the driveshafts from 2014-2018. -

Its true that I am a newer member to this forum but that does not mean that I have not spent Months searching the web and reading complaints, fixes, trials, band aids, MacGyver's, Duct Tapes, and Bubble gum fixes. We have to do the same dog and pony show that everyone else has been through as we are all at the mercy of the dealers and evil corporation. I chose (like others have) to do updates to the forum on my quest for a smooth ride at 70. So I understand those who have been through it, lived it, and posted it already may expect us to just throw the white flag up. I however just cant give up without a fight no matter the outcome. I do believe that my Service Manager is doing everything in his power to repair my truck and at the same time I understand that he is at the mercy of the evil corporation in giving him approval in warranty items and labor. I also know that at some point if they can not correct it (Like others) they will pull the plug and fall back on the BS line of preforming by specs. And by preforming by specs means they engineered a 2 ton vibrator and any trucks that DONT shake at 70 are NOT preforming by specs. Others are in a worse position than I am as my truck is a little more basic, little less money, and has 16K miles on it compared to most of the complaints being new $40-$60K trucks with 1 or 2K miles on them. I am optimistic still in the chance that they may replace something else and find that it cures the issue and time will tell if I would be so lucky. But just as you all posted for the next guy, I felt the need to do the same. That's the glory of the forums, they empower people with information. On top of all that I don't feel like just laying down and letting GM get away with a crap design, even if I am 1 voice that means the problem is still out there and that the next guy who buys one that has the problem can read another story and it adds another check mark to the evil corporations failure. I have won a Lemon law suit, I have also been in and won class actions suits against automobile corporations. The lemon law was a wash and the class action didn't cover all the BS that it was worth but they did have to pay and got the black eyes for their failures even if they did force a gag to complete them. Joes 2 Cents..... -
