For those that have the new 10 speed what are you're first impressions? I just haven't seen many real world reviews yet. I'm getting my 24 AT4 this next week. Kind of anxious as I would like to know how some feel it performs. I think it should be good but my 23 with the 6 speed is pretty good too.

I do like the WT trims as well especially if you put some black aftermarket wheels and a flatbed on them. But I guess I’m spoiled and want a few more of the creature comforts in the higher trims on my daily driver. If I ever get rid of my 15 I will probably just go with a WT/Pro next time because it will be solely for work and not my daily driver.

I’ve already prepared myself for at least 6-8 weeks to get shipped. If it comes in before then, great. But I would bet it will be summer before I see it. Shouldn’t be this way but seems like everything we get now days takes longer than it should.

When I first saw pics of the new Ford I thought my god that’s ugly. I did see an XLT Tremor that didn’t look too bad but this this is hideous!

Actually the 6 speed is geared low enough from 1-3 it gets the load moving pretty good without a ton of revving. Where the flat spot is is from 3-4th. Think the 10 speed will help that. Sure it will rap out to 5K if I was flooring it all the time but if I just take my time it doesn’t scream too much. Braking is fine with the load but not having an exhaust brake like my LML has does suck. It will downshift some to help slow the load in tow/haul but it’s nothing like the exhaust brake on the diesel. I had a pretty good squat with it compared to my 2015 with air bags, but I will tell you it handles the load better than the 2015 with air bags in my opinion. Frame is pretty stout on the 2020+. It sits up a lot higher than my 2015. I was only 65 yesterday but trans temp never went above 165. I’ve never seen it get higher than that but I haven’t pulled in 100 degree heat yet either. I will say this thing tows way better than the old 6.0 4-speed I had but that was a 2005 so really can’t compare that at all to the newer 6.0L with the 6 speed. I’ve never actually driven one of those. I kept hoping maybe GM would up the HP/TQ on the L8T with the refresh but so far they haven’t and probably never will. I think something like 450HP/500TQ in a gas would just about meet most everyone’s needs for towing with a gas. That would help in the elevation areas. I know some will think providing a better gas engine will hurt diesel sales, quite honestly wouldn’t GM be better off anyway then you don’t have all the crazy expensive emissions warranty claims? Just my $0.02.

Dealer called me today and target production week is set for April 1-10th or so. Crazy how fast it got picked up. He said I’ll have the first 2024 there.. Hopefully I’ll see it by mid to late May as I know it will take a bit to get it to the dealership. Really nuts how this all worked out. I ordered this less than a month ago and this one is the only one they’ve had to get a build date and they haven’t gotten any additional allocation since I ordered mine. Getting a little anxious now since it’s getting close. I’ll keep you all posted when it gets here!

Yeah like I said probably wouldn’t do this in a hilly area but get by with it out here. Honestly braking and stability were no issue. The 23 with the 6 speed is rated for 24K GCVWR. The 2024 is supposed to be up to 26K GCVWR. So technically I wasn’t too far off what the pickup was rated for. Not saying should do it all the time but it can be done. The 23 feels better towing than my 2015 but the LML will tow the weight better.

Had a chance to pull my flatbed trailer today to get a feel for how this gas does with some pretty heavy weight. Trailer is 5450 lbs empty, load was about 12,500. So nearing 18,000 lbs total combined trailer weight. Pickup weighs in about 7200 lbs so basically sitting at 25K GCVW. It was really windy today. Had a bad cross wind then had to drive directly into the wind. I was pretty happy with the performance. I didn't drive much above 60 mph because it was so windy, but it would have done it no problem on a calm day. Just kept the trans locked out of 6th and it pretty much held 5th gear once up to speed. Only towed this weight about 30 miles or so. To be upfront I would never pull this weight if I was pulling in a hilly area. I live where it's flat so I get by with it. But having said that I had no issues handling the weight at all. If this new 10 speed is even better I doubt I'll ever go back to a diesel again unless I tow regularly or move to an area where there is a lot more hills.

I studied the gear ratios between the 6L90 and the 10L1000. My feeling is the mid-range pulling power will really wake up with the 10 speed. As I’ve said in several posts the 6.6 gas with the 6 speed gets a load moving well from 1-2 but kind of falls on its face from 3-4 then after that on the top end it pulls no problem. You’ll have a couple more gears from 3rd to 6th that should really help. They fact they bumped the GCVWR up from 24K to 26K might be an indication of a performance gain since engine HP/TQ is the same YOY. For my needs right now this gas will work great. May never buy another new diesel again, but I’ll probably always keep my LML around for when I have to tow real heavy.

We have a 2012 Yukon and 2021 Yukon. The 12 has 175K on it and has been the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. Literally have done nothing to it other than basic maintenance. Trans still shifts perfect and never had any issues. Our 21 has the 10 speed. It’s a whole different animal. Seems like you have an extra 50 hp and it gets at least 2-3 mpg more and it’s the same engine. Time will tell if that transmission will hold up but I’m hoping the 10 speed HD will make me as happy as the Yukon.

Yes all the tech on these pickups definitely scare me a bit, especially if you keep them long term. So far the Infotainment on my 2015 has been trouble free at 120K. It’s had a couple glitches every now an then where the screen goes blank for maybe a couple cycles of running and when it’s real cold the touch screen can be a bit slow to react. I know going from my 2008 to the 2015 interior was amazing. I remember being overwhelmed with all the features. Hopefully I’ll be even more impressed with the 2024!

Well got confirmation from my dealer today that the order was picked up by GM on Thursday. Pretty fast for putting a deposit down this past Monday. Now it's the waiting game to see how long it will be before TPW hits. If things go smoothly maybe I get this thing by summer? I'll be honest getting kind of anxious. Some of that anxiety is not knowing if I'll like the new 10 speed or not. I think the new interior will be awesome and looking forward to some of the features.
-
Man think if you were the lucky one that got one of those! Nice thing about a new vehicle is that it's pristine when you pick it up. That would suck to have a bunch of mud up under the frame when you got it.
-
Well that kind of lines up with what GM has been putting out there on the start of production anyway. Guess I won't worry about it till I actually get confirmation from my dealer GM accepted the order and then it's just the waiting game. Normally probably 8-10 weeks but we don't live in normal land and haven't for a while. I did ask the dealer if they would send vehicles out with missing components that would be later retrofitted. He didn't think they would do that anymore. Said that little experiment probably cost them a ton. I was missing hood insulation on my 23 that I just recently got installed. So that makes me feel better that if and when my 24 arrives it will have everything on it. There is one thing messing around on the GMC configurator last night that caught my eye. I guess you can select different tire options. You can get a factory 20" BFG All-terrain as an option. All it said was "See Dealer for pricing". So I did email my dealer and asked him to check into it. Maybe that is something I can change before it's accepted. The factory Goodyear Wranglers are ok but the BFG's would look pretty good on an AT4 IMO unless it's a big upgrade to change.

I've gotten SLT's in the past and have always liked that look, but wanted to try something different this time. I'll be honest I don't like the idea of having painted bumpers, but we'll see how they hold up. In regards to the technology yeah it's great to have especially if you do any city driving (which we don't do much of). My wifes Yukon has the tech package and I enjoy it, but figured for a pickup using around the farm may not be the best idea. Anymore we use Rangers/ATV's for cattle stuff so the pickups hardly ever go off-road too much and we have some beaters for that anyway. Thanks for the heads up on the dual batteries. I didn't check that box but maybe something I could change before it's too late.

2024 / Downpour Metallic (gxp)
Doodle replied to jjackkrash's topic in 2020-2026 Silverado HD & Sierra HD
Thanks for finding this. I’ve been trying to see what these new colors were going to look like. I wanted to do Quikck Silver in a 24 but they went to Sterling Gray which I don’t really care for. I am actually thinking of the Titanium Rush Metallic just because it’s almost three colors in one. I’ve had so many summit white ones need to step out of the box. -
Concerns with 6 speed transmission vs 10 speed transmission?
Doodle replied to Gabe Bunn's topic in 6.6L Gas V8 (L8T)
I hear you on these prices. I had a 2022 AT4 gas ordered in July of 21 and the fleet company I was working with could never secure enough allocation to fill my order. Fast forward a year later and I needed to put something in service for my business. Ended up finding a 23 SLE. I paid about $6K more for that SLE than the original AT4 I had ordered (incentives for the AT4 at the time were much higher). Needless to say I was not very happy. I told the dealer I was working with I might consider trading in the 23 for a 24 when they started taking orders. So last week he built me another SLE and surprisingly it is gonna be cheaper than my 23 by a few hundred dollars. I was kind of shocked as I figured it would be quite a bit higher, not cheaper. Thinking I may order a 24 and just see what trade for my 23 will be when it shows up. There is actually quite a bit of upgrades with the 24’s. Biggest would be the 10 speed and the new interior but all trims come with Intellibeam (used to be an option package) you can get adaptive cruise now in the SLE and wireless Apple Car play. From my research it looks like the SLE’s and SLT’s didn’t really take much of a price increase but the Denali’s and AT4’s did go up quite a bit. The Denali ultimate starts at $100K now. I think I’ve about priced myself out of an AT4. They look awesome but probably can’t touch one for less than $70K in a gas now. But I have no complaints with the 23 other than I wished it had a few more options on it, hence why I was considering trading. I am not real happy with them dropping the QuickSilver color either. They replaced with a steel gray and I don’t care for it. I used to always get white but kind of liked the QuickSliver so may just keep it. -
Concerns with 6 speed transmission vs 10 speed transmission?
Doodle replied to Gabe Bunn's topic in 6.6L Gas V8 (L8T)
Yes the gas and diesel are the same transmission, I can't comment though about the internals of the the diesel transmission (maybe beefed up a bit to handle greater torque?) So if they put this transmission behind something with almost 1000 lb/ft of torque I don't think it's gonna mind the 464 the gas puts down. Should be no issues with reliability only concern would be how they tune the shift points from the factory. I wanted to wait for a refresh but had to put something in service last year so got a 2023 with the 6 speed. It does fine but I think the 10 speed will be improved. Honestly I will likely trade my 23 off for a 24 when they start showing up. I think the only issue with the 10 speed will be heavy towing. It will be interesting to see how it performs with loads close to 26k GCW (which they are rated for). I've pulled that weight with my 23 and it did allright but there is a flat spot in the power band between 3rd to 4th and once it shifts into 5th it has enough momentum to keep going. I think a few more gears will help that transition between 30-45 mph towing heavy. Unloaded I think the 10 speed will really wake it up. Will it be night and day, not likely but it should be improved. -
Usually I just install the B&W turnover ball but this 23 came with the factory prep package. I personally don't like it. I like the B&W better, but I don't own a fifth wheel either only gooseneck trailers. I hate the fact you can turn the ball over and it seems to "rattle" (for lack of a better term) a lot more. Plus I don't like the fact the ball sits up off the bed higher than the B&W. But it is a nice deal that it's all setup when you get it and you don't have to drop it off and get it installed.

I believe the 3500 SRW has a bigger ring gear too. 12” on the 3500 and 11.5” on the 2500. Not a huge deal but there is a difference. A lot of guys out my way run 3500 SRW for farm and ranch use as dually’s just aren’t real practical off road. I can tell you there is a big difference how the pickup will handle weight in a 2500 vs 3500. Not that the 2500 won’t handle heavy loads (thats what I run) but the 1 tons are quite a bit stouter. Depending upon what you do a 3500 gas isn’t a bad option but I would agree with others if you want to maximize the capability the diesel would be better.

Did you’re truck come missing the hood insulation? My 23. From day one it has made a faint whistling sound like you describe. It drives me nuts having a new vehicle do this. Got me to thinking maybe it’s because the hood insulation is missing. I got a notice the other day the part has came in so hopefully after it’s installed it will go away. As soon as I get it installed I’ll update.

Wow didn’t know the configurator was going yet. My dealer told me they hadn’t seen anything yet, but I did read somewhere the order banks were supposed to open Jan 19th. I was holding out for the refresh but when they switched to the 2024 I went ahead and bought the 23 last fall. My plans were to probably trade it off early for a 24 if the prices are insane. Did you ‘re dealer give yo any indication of pricing/options? I figure my 23 used will be worth a decent amount in 2023 I would hope. Guess we’ll see what the numbers look like and try to get some indication of when it could get built.

Yeah this 6.6 runs circles around my old 6.0 but it was also a 4 speed too. But those things were pretty much indestructible. I wouldn’t want to pull max GCWR all the time but it could do it. I’d still prefer my diesel for the heavy loads but it’s reassuring the gas can get the job done if needed.

As I said in a previous post I’m happy with the 6 speed but I do think the 10 speed will really help towing wise. There is a flat spot between 3-4th in my opinion when you are towing heavy. I think a few more gears will help keep the powerband going. Once up to cruising speed the 6 speed is adequate. I took my 23 on a 900 mile roadtrip this weekend and hit some interstate at 80 mph with some good hills. It never downshifted once (unloaded) so that was good. I did notice running at 65 compared to 70 I was getting 1.5 to 2 mpg better. Kind of shocked me. I ran 25 mile runs on flat ground and at 65 it was 17 and at 70 it was 15.2. At 80 it was 14. Imagine at 60 might be over 18 but didn’t ever go that slow. Pretty impressed so far with the 6.6 gas.
-
I’m gonna run some straight gas one of these days and see if there is much of a difference. I bet it won’t be any better economically. Going from 15 to 17 mpg and $0.50 (here locally) would likely be more expensive to run the straight gas.
