I chose the 2.7ho on my new 2022 refresh trailboss. I drove the 3.0, 5.3 and the 2.7. I wasn’t impressed by the 3.0 it seemed laggy and sluggish compared to the 5.3 & 2.7, not by a whole lot though, then there’s the fact that diesel fuel is 20-25% more expensive than gas plus you have to use def so that adds to the cost, maintenance is always more expensive, most of the many diesels I’ve owned over the years cost twice as much to maintain. Then once the engine is out of warranty the major parts that fail cost far more than a gas engine. It did come with a standard 100k warranty though. That doesn’t mean it’s going to last longer than a well built gas engine though, small diesels are a crap shoot. Basically the cost of ownership even with the better mileage wasn’t as good as the gas engines.
The 5.3 is a good engine but has been having some major problems like valve spring failure ect… I’m friends with a couple Chevy mechanics and they told me the 2.7 has way fewer issues in their experience. I drive 5.3’s all the time and after driving the 2.7ho felt that the 2.7 was equal to it but gleaned better mpg’s plus I enjoyed the drive quality more, which is hard for me to describe what exactly it is. It also came with discounts adding up to several thousand over the diesel or v-8s. Most of the miles on my truck in the summer are towing and it has been great! I also drive a new 2022 Tahoe every day with the 5.3 and it’s fine as well, all 3 were admittedly close in performance. The 2.7 runs at 1500rpms most of the time so I’m not sure why it would have a shorter life and turbos are much cheaper than they used to be so not worried about having to replace it post 100k but I’m sure it’ll last longer than that, only time will tell. We have had ford eco boost engines and put gobs of hours on them and ridden them hard with no majors issues so just not worried about it.
