Shake or Vibration Issues

At the risk of beating the dead horse, 2 weeks ago I could feel the vibrations more... never did anything. Now today the vibes are significantly less. The difference is 2 weeks ago temps were in the 50's and now temps are 20's. Are the hydraulic mounts stiffer with colder temps? Do we have hydraulic shocks? Are they stiffer also? -

I am saying this right now, we are forced to buy tires from the dealerships. GM will not stand behind tires bought elsewhere... I bought BF Goodrich (local tire shop) that Roadforce at between 10 to 20 pounds in the set. GM wont do anything for the 2 tires above 15 pounds. Guess what? Tire shop wont do anything because the manufacturer spec is 30 pounds. At some point, Goodyear is going to tell GM ---- Go **** yourselves, the spec is 30 pounds! Fix your damn truck. By the way, I had all tires Road forced 4 weeks ago, the Pico showed improvement and it felt great. The feeling lasted about 3 weeks and now I am starting to feel it again. I also have started hearing what sounds like a thud / bottoming out when hitting bumps with right front tire. The noise is heard when the shock expands. Anytime the shock has excess unexpected travel, I hear it. I still believe it to be a bad shock or shocks in the front -

Thanks, now in discussion because these are hub centric. -

Hub Centric - if the rib is not press fit (which it is not), there is obviously going to be some slop between the rim and centering hub, if the bolt circle is out, could the tightening of lug nuts literally move the rim a few thousandths off center.. I guess how far can you go before you feel it? I really did not pay attention to this even though I have had the tires balanced or RF checked at least 10 times! -

Are all stock wheels for the Silverado hub centric, I am running 18"s -

Hold the press... Are we running hub centric or lug centric stock wheels? -

If the studs are not concentric (off center) to the centerline of the axle, this explains why GM is requiring RF numbers 1/2 of what may be the industry standards. This also would explain the success of those few that have had their tires balanced directly on the vehicle. Basically, a road force balance of 10 or less works fine until you have to rotate your tires. That explains a lot. -

So the flange holes need to run true to the center of the axle shaft? How far off can they be before you feel it? When you mount the tire to the hub the nuts center to rim on the stud bolts? Are we thinking that the bolt circle is shifted off center to the axle center? Someone can lay this out in CAD program? Cut out the bolt holes and place it over the flange? It should at least give an idea how far off center? -

Well the PICO pulled what the dealer said was a first order tire but they were going to send it to GM for analysis and what to look for... First order tire is easy, tire or wheel out of round. I don't believe GM would need to analyze that data as that is sort of a no brainer I think they meant first order engine which would match his comments Friday about "engine related frequencies". What would cause a first order engine vibration? -

Mine is in for a PICO analysis. The first recordings pointed to engine related but barely above specification. I specifically mentioned motor mounts to the service. What other would pop a vibration on the same order as engine? By the way, I also can feel the worse of it in the steering wheel. -

I am interested in some different expert opinions regarding torque converter shudder. My vibration seems to be when torque converter locks up. I do not have vibration at down shift. I have vibration soft pedaling thru town. If I run it harder, I do not seem to feel the vibration. Highway driving / cruising at 65 plus gets a vibration - torque converter locked up? Would a TC shudder get worse when the motor goes from V6 to V4? I know only very little about the function of the torque converter. How can it be tested to determine if this is a potential root cause? What systems do our trucks have that would be wearing out that would allow us to feel shudder at lock up? Engine mounts? Will the torque converter lock up in M5? With those that have tunes or tuned out AFM, did it change the vibration harmonics / frequency because shift points were adjusted? I know there has to be some experts on here who know the workings of automatic trans and torque converters! -

I was thinking of torque converter also. I drove 73 mph today to work in M5 with tow mode on. Ride seemed to be less shaky. However, driving in M6 just sucks, anytime engine speed gets below 1500 RPMs it seems to get a whole vehicle resonance - definitely drive train related... AFM vibration seems to be getting worse and am getting a very heavy shudder on low speed transition from V4 to V6. So I am hoping that something finally ****ing breaks sooner or later as my dealer is no help! -

Same here, all highway for me. The steering wheel is where I have it the worst although it may be masking any other vibrations. The tires all road force below 10 pounds. It is so annoying and I am about at my wits end. I have a case open and my request to repurchase has been submitted to GM. -

Thanks following FB also.... Are they doing vibration and buffeting for both the SUV and the Trucks? -

So how would the PICO scopes analyze this vibration? Would it be in the same harmonics as a tire / wheel? -

This truck is depressing as hell, all vibration I have is in the steering wheel. The rear seems calm. Going for a reflash tomorrow of the Smooth Road Shake software. I loaded a 4 wheeler in the back last night in prep for WV deer season, the truck road much better all night and did some highway driving. Left the 4 wheeler in the bed last night and left on my 30 minute highway drive to work, drove much worse than last night. Something is not right and I am beginning to feel unsafe at highway speeds. It just seems disconnected from the road, like the wheels and tires are doing their own vibration dance with little regard to road undulations. I have a case open with GM. Waiting for who knows what! Going for a reflash tomorrow of the Smooth Road Shake software. Wish me luck! -

Still dicking around with mine, waiting for the GM to figure a solution.... I still go back to thinking about Electronic Power Steering Software issue.. I have good RF on rear tires, Fronts are slightly high with 16 and 21 RF numbers. Getting a slight vibration in fronts on straightaways, highway speed sweeping turns excites the vibrations. According to the Smooth Road Shake Software, it should compensate for slight out of balance conditions. Why is it not compensating? The following comes directly from GM advertising: Has anyone tried or had their service department reset the software for this? Electric Power Steering System The belt-driven electric power steering system features an integrated electromechanical power steering unit, containing the power steering control module, its sensors, the power steering motor, a belt drive and a ball nut mechanism. The power steering control module is part of the power steering assist motor assembly and is replaceable as a complete unit independent of the steering gear assembly. The torque sensor is integrated with the steering gear pinion and is serviced as part of the steering gear. The power steering control module has a software feature referred to as Smooth Road Shake Compensation that reduces steering wheel vibration caused by an imbalance from the front tire/wheel assemblies. The vibration transmitted to the steering wheel is referred to as Smooth Road Shake and is a phenomenon that occurs only at highway speeds and on smooth roads. The power steering control module employs active controls to sense and reduce the periodic torque component applied to the steering wheel caused by the wheel imbalance force. This software feature will compensate for a specific range of imbalance. In addition to smooth road shake, road crown is compensated for by the steering wheel angle sensor signal, which calculates the intended driving direction. The Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) receives serial data message inputs from the steering wheel angle sensor. The steering wheel angle sensor does not require centering often. However, if the steering wheel angle sensor is not correctly centered it may create a lead/pull condition. If this condition is encountered, always perform the Steering Angle Sensor Centering procedure in SI before performing a wheel alignment -

Serious question: Does anyone notice that vibration seems less pronounced on wet roads? Traveled the same highway for years; rained yesterday vibration was there but livable. Today dry: Vibration was much more pronounced. -

I am proceeding with working with the General Manager of the dealership. He was unaware of the issues and we reviewed my service history. He visited several internet links about the vibrations as we talked. He looked astounded as he read the common list of repairs that were done with no fix: tires, drivelines, axles, rearends, etc. I felt very comfortable that he would manage this properly and he let me know that he is on my side with this and that it needs fixed or I need out of it. He was also surprised that he had another open Silverado case with GM sitting outside his service department. By the way I was told the PICO crashed when they were testing mine but they admit that something was definitely vibrating and there is no fix yet. That sounds like they gave up hope on fixing any vibrations. I am not sure what deal we can cook up but may consider a Colorado to avoid these issues. -

Just got the call back. All the vibrations are related, we opened a case for you. Whenever GM has a repair, we will call you. We still did not find the rattle in the dash. I am going tonight to document all the service calls with the General Manager. I think I am done with this vehicle. -

GM Dealership has had mine since Monday night, they made an appointment for Tuesday and I let them know they can have it to Thursday. I asked them to look at the following: 1. Center Dash Rattle by defroster vents 2. Steering wheel vibration please look at hubs, electronic power steering package, shocks, ball joints, and tie rod ends 3. AFM vibration please look at motor mounts (if they need shimmed on some trucks, might need shimmed on all) I followed up with a phone call on Wednesday. 1. Center Dash Rattle by defroster vents, we drove and can not duplicate it - I personally sent them the fix for this issue as described in GM Techlinks bulletins within minutes of the phone call 2 and 3 Steering wheel vibration and AFM. We drove it around and yes I can feel what you are talking about, we are going to have another tech drive it and see what he thinks, then we may hook up the PICO meter. Why the f$%& do they waste time driving around thinking what could solve the problem? The PICO meter analysis points them in the correct direction if done properly. I am beginning to believe that the majority of the dealerships: A. do not know how to analyze the PICO readings B. do know how to analyze the PICO readings but are afraid of what they will find. Once the readings point to a repair that GM will not reimburse the dealership at 100%, the cat is out of the bag. I think that is why we hear this is normal operation. It is now Thursday and I have not heard anything about where the truck is after getting promised a call back. In for the disappointment ! -
