  1. Around here, 70 mph is a suggestion. People still drive around 80 to 85. Even in southern Orange County where it's posted at 65, people drive 80. Even back in the old days when it was 55, the highway patrol hardly cared if one did 75 mph. Cruise control - it brakes while I'm doing downhill. Don't like that at all. I don't really need to do neutral coasting anymore since the top gear is so high.
  2. I know l/100 km, I used to live in Germany. I can believe it. I am easy on the gas, I try to drive as if there's an eggshell between my foot and the gas pedal. Makes a huge difference. With stop lights, I use the brakes as a last minute resort and I wind up passing other people who decided to speed up and then come to a full stop just when the red light turns green. Sometimes I get into that car's lane because other people behind me want to accelerate faster. I try not to inconvenience anybody. It's pretty common to see cars going 80 mph (130 km/h) around here on the I-15.
  3. Ha ha ha! I am the EXACT same way! I go 45 mph and hug the right lanes behind other 18-wheelers going uphill. Downhill, I regularly exceed 90 mph on 70-mph highways. People don't understand me when I am all over the highway, going left to right then back to left and changing speed. It's all about hypermiling, boys and girls.
  4. Many seem to be unable to wrap their heads around that, mostly Americans who have never been to Europe. Trucks can't exceed 62 mph (100 km/h) and there are cars barrelling on the left lane, easily exceeding 100 mph (160 km/h). It's not privilege, some want to go slow, some want to go fast, it's all about harmony. It's sehr verboten to pass on the right lane so people MUST get back to the right and allow the faster cars to pass. I have absolutely no problem with people wanting to go faster and will even speed up if I'm on a one-lane road then use the turnout. Driving back and forth on the 74, I can say with certainty I have never had more than a car behind me for more than a few minutes. If two cars come up, I will go faster. Fortunately, multi-lane highways are very common here in southern California. Ortega Highway is some of the most dangerous in the U.S., about 99% is one-lane and speed limits range from 55 mph to yellow signs showing 25 mph. I'm not kidding, it is really twisty. By law, people must use the turn out if more than three vehicles are behind. I still do it when there's a single car. Even if one car comes up, I will go faster, perhaps exceeding the limit, then getting off to let it pass then I am back on it going lower than the speed limit and hoping nobody gets behind me.
  5. Believe me, they piss me off too. I try to stay at 55 mph even on the twisty Ortega Highway. If any car gets behind me, I will use the turnout and let them pass. A lot of times, I travel during odd hours so that's not a problem, nobody gets slowed down and I achieve my 31 mpg. Easy peasy. Spending quite a bit of time in Europe, believe me, I hate it when I am costing somebody else time and will get out of the way.
  6. I do that all the time especially when there's nobody behind me. If there is a left lane open, use it, don't get behind me and get pissed.
  7. Actually, hypermilers aren't the problem. It's the left lane hogs. The left lane hogs are a hindrance. I always treat the left lane like kryptonite and that's the way it should be, irregardless of the speed. Living in Germany, I regularly drove in excess of 100 mph and still used the left lane strictly for passing. Do NOT stay on it.
  8. Same here, using Mexican gas is way better. No ethanol makes a difference. I still had Mexican gas in it when I got 31 mpg driving at 7 a.m. on a Sunday in Los Angeles, going 60 with the cruise control and absolutely no traffic.
  9. The DIC is much better nowadays. It's been reported to be spot on, starting with the T1. I believe it too after measuring a few. I've only filled it up seven times so far.
  10. I'm a frequent border crosser so it impacts the mileage while I'm waiting in line. I haven't driven it much lately because of handling issues and I am always on dirt roads. I know I've done 640 miles out of a tank while traveling to Hermosillo, Sonora. Mexican gas is better, no ethanol.
  11. I haven't driven the truck in a while due to several reasons but now I'm using it only on the highway as a long distance commuter. Recently, I had to drive to Los Angeles Airport and wanted to see how high I could get the gas mileage. Very dry, no wind, slightly hilly. 31 mpg. I'm surprised because the gas inside is about four months old. Not bad for a V8.
  12. I agree with the tire pressure, I don't know why but my dealership had it 10 above the recommended psi and it really affected the handling. Now that I have it down to recommended levels, it has greatly improved but there's still room for more improvement.
  13. Maybe it's the grade.. go to Google Earth, put your mouse on top of where you were and the place you went, Even going up 1,000 ft can be a 15% reduction in fuel economy.
  14. Exactly the same situation I was in. That is a liability issue, I was more angry over the fact I could have killed the guy walking on the side of the road. GM fanboys got all over me on this, questioning my experience, etc. "My Ford did the same" I've driven 4x4's and none were this bad. I was going about 70 km/h, maybe 80 km/h when it happened. That is why my next car isn't going to be a Chevrolet unless they address this.
  15. It's been discussed here. I got flamed when I mentioned that! That's why I have ten on my ignore list. The back end fishtailed so badly I nearly ran over a guy on the side of the road. It was a straight road with dried dirt on top from a recent storm. I was so surprised it fishtailed when I wasn't hitting the gas or braking on a straight road. Solution: the tires were inflated at 45 psi or 44, well above the recommended 35. I have no idea why it came like that and letting air out helped a bit. The next two times, it fishtailed but wasn't as bad as the first one. I was so mad, I nearly ran over a pedestrian. Like you, I have an RST 4x4 so I know exactly where you're coming from.
  16. Great review, I am in the market for one. One of the reasons I took the Silverado over the F-150 is because of the bed. I can sleep in the back while camping. The 2012 F-150's bed was too short so I had to get the long bed. Even though Silverado was only 3 inches longer, I found it much more spacious by about 10 inches when I sleep diagonally in the back. Of course, I'd want a tonneau to protect myself from the elements. I am not looking for 100% water proof, I know that's not possible, and I expect the bed to get wet or have a few leaks but at least the water won't be hitting my face.
  17. Honestly, I'd buy it if it was quite a bit higher than the cabin so that it doesn't block the 3rd light and the lights. I don't know why it's short with another brake light on it, it defeats the purpose of the lights coming out of the cabin to the bed.
  18. I wouldn't mind a mount on my visor. Sometimes it gets really hot in Sonora (Mexico) and I've had a few dash-mounted or window-mounted phones reboot or simply turn off because the dry Arizona (or Sonora) sun would cook it. The idea of opening my visor and having a place for the phone is appealing to me. Should I have patented that? I want it INSIDE the visor, not hanging out where it is exposed to sunlight.
  19. Was it directed to me? You replied to me.. I don't have a sports bar on mine. My F-150 had a camper shell which was $1,400 including installation from Bel-Air Shells in Garden Grove, CA. I was mildly annoyed at how it made my light from the cabin useless even though the shell came with its own light. It would have been better if there was some glass up there so that I don't have to use third-party lighting.
  20. It still blocks the third brake light. I don't want two at the same time. That is why I'm going for a tonneau cover instead of a camper shell.
  21. I looked at mine, it is really in line. Nothing out of the ordinary, I had no problems adjusting to it from various rental cars and trucks. I drive at least 2 or 3 different cars every month, all rentals, and I drive different trucks. Only one car threw me off, that was the Audi S5000. So close to each other! But can't say the same for the 99% of the other cars and trucks I've driven. Maybe it's defective?
  22. Trust me, it was stupid. It was so far away from my reach, I could barely touch it with the way the windshield was. That was why I had it on the top, next to rearview mirror and got cited. That was way back in 2008 or 2009.
  23. Not the upper corners, just the bottom two corners, that's it. It's been that way for at least a decade, it isn't new. The area cannot be larger than five square inches on the left. The right side is a little bigger, allowing for larger stickers. It was 2008 when California finally allowed mounting things on windshields. Before, you could not. But you had to be running GPS on the phone, you could not use it for anything else. I had a TomTom 500 and got a ticket because mine was mounted at the top, next to the rear view mirror. I believe it had to be a dash camera. I think the cop picked on me because I had Mexican plates on my new car.
  24. Cupholder ones are nicer than vent mounts. Also, having the air conditioner on full blast against the back of the phone can mess up the battery. I agree with the above statement. Try checking into a cupholder version? Cupholder's placed pretty high. I looked into that but my Android Auto does a decent job so I just stick my phone in the cupholder without needing to see the screen.
  25. The adaptive cruise control was the WORST feature in the car I rented in Germany, and could NOT turn the damn thing off! There's no speed limit so I would travel at 80 to 90 mph, trucks cannot go above 60 mph so I would have to watch the left lane for a gap so I could jump in and pass the truck. Sometimes, the cruise control would act up and slam the brakes whenever I got too close to the truck in front of me, but the car would not know I already intended to move to the left lane. And then with it going slower, I'd mess up the traffic rhythm on the left lane and watch all the angry glares while moving back to the right lane, still behind the truck. I do NOT want it and will NOT consider a car with that bullshit!
