2500 HD - 10,650 lbs. GVWR?
sheath replied to tom18287's topic in 2020-2026 Silverado HD & Sierra HD
Amazing the difference a long bed diesel truck makes over a short bed Gas. Compare your tow ratings to mine (3500 CC/SB 4x4 with Snow Plow / Camper option). The way you spec'd your 2500 is awesome for towing. Nice Job. -
Ham Radio Installs in 2020+ HD trucks?
sheath replied to sheath's topic in Modifications & Accessories
Thanks tbully. I really like the fender mount position, and will get with the company who is making them to see if they have a version for our newer trucks. If that doesn't work out, I'll be putting a roof rack on the truck, so I can always mount the antenna up there. Center of the roof is an excellent place (probably the best for ground plane) for an antenna. If I wasn't doing the roof rack, I'd probably do the same as you. Mounting the radio under the seat in the Dodge worked great because it had good air flow. Hence why I'll probably do the same on the Chevy. It was a bit better protected in the Dodge as the foot well area was lower, so I'll need to make a front plate to protect it. Will post up how that works out when it's done. -
What have you guys done to mount a Ham / Commercial radio in your 2020+ HD trucks? I'm going to start working on this in a few weeks, and would really like to see what you have done. I'll be moving an Icom ID-5100 from the Ram into a '22 3500HD Crew Cab. The ram was an easy install, the floor under the driver's seat is flat. The Chevy is a bit different with the rear floor heater duct. Most of what was made for the Dodge will work in the Chevy, sans the piece that ties across the front seat mount bolts. In the Chevy I can use a piece of 5mm aluminum flat bar 1" wide that runs across those two seat mounting spots, under the seat frame. I'll need to space one of the rubber bumpers down about an inch to get the rear to sit supported. The antenna will be tougher. I don't think the earlier fender mount will work, so I need to look into that further. Picture of the fender with the green drawing is what I was thinking. That is how the NMO antenna mount worked in the dodge, It was really nice for going through car washes, as I could quickly remove the antenna and put a cap on the NMO mount. I'll use the same ProClip mount as tbully used in the other thread:

Good point. I'm looking forward to see what the aftermarket will eventually come out with. With the tightening of emissions standards, and GM locking down this ECM it is a pretty tough ask. In another thread guys were hoping to see a supercharger. Not sure that would work with heavy towing due to the amount of heat generated, but it would be pretty fun on the drive over to Home Deopt!

Short answer is the 87 Octane will work best, unless you're in at high altitude, in which you'd run 85 Octane. Places like Utah & Colorado will have 85 Octane. Octane rating is a measurement of the ignition point of gasoline. The higher the number, the more resistant to detonation (as in when the initial burn <oxidation> starts), but it doesn't change the amount of energy in the fuel. That said, it is important to run quality fuel, and some stations sell fuel that barely meets the requirements. So rather than go to a higher Octane, go to a higher quality gas station that has high traffic volume so the fuel you put in your truck is fresh, and of high quality. Some great YouTube video, and complete explanations on the internet.

Feel Good Story About the L8T Continuing to Run
sheath replied to Another JR's topic in 6.6L Gas V8 (L8T)
"Honey, I'd love to pour that new walk way, but the bed is too high to load the cement in. Let's call someone to do that, and we can go shopping... for new dirt bikes." So far, I'm loving this 6.6 gas engine! -
Russia sanctions effect DEF URea manufactuering????

Finally a good reason to go visit the crazy cat lady. Just have her collect the cat urine in plastic gallon jugs, and give it to the kids in the neighborhood. Will save her money on kitty litter, and kids can sell urea instead of lemonade. -
SOLD —— GM TRANSPARENT TRAILER CAMERA For Sale $250 OBO
sheath replied to Boda1985's topic in Modifications & Accessories
As a side note, I bought this option with my truck, and am really glad to have it. I set it on the fender well to help line up the gooseneck hitch. bed camera sets the hitch longitudinally, trailer camera sets the hitch laterally. So, darned easy it's like cheating. grabbed the idea from this video. But i didn't want a permanent installation, or a separate monitor. He made this way too much work for me to want to replicate. I just plug in the trailer, and the camera, set it on the wheel well, hop in the truck and back to just the right spot. First time, every time. Then put it away. -
Rear Window Leak and GM warranty warning
sheath replied to bowtie2007's topic in Troubleshooting, Warranty & Recalls
Depending on the ambient environment this leak could result in black mold, creating an unsafe environment inside the vehicle (who wants to strap their child into a seat right above a black mold infected carpet). If that issue exists a complaint can be filed with the NHTSA, as per their website. How to report a vehicle safety problem with NHTSA Had a situation with a Honda Motorcycle. Honda absolutely refused to look at it. There was a rather large response in filing reports from owners of that bike due to a web forum. NHTSA got involved, and Honda finally worked to resolve including bikes no longer in warranty, and even bikes sold to another owner. I came into towards the end, so I don't know how long it took, but it was impressive to see a collective group being able to get something done. Hope this helps. -
Will your truck be used in a severe application that requires such frequent oil changes? The chart in the Owner's Manual shows oil change frequency of 12,000Km (7,500 miles) or each year whichever comes first, with the caveat that the Oil Change Reminder should be followed. The program they are offering seems to be excessively frequent, and that is time out of your day to schedule and complete the appointment. Would be interesting to know how many miles our trucks go on average before the Oil Service Reminder comes on.

Here's to your truck getting a complete build, and shipping quickly. For what it's worth, it seems that trucks which get a complete build, ship fast. From everything I've seen on this forum, it seems the trucks that get "partial builds" and end up in the parking area waiting for parts, are the ones that get drug out for what seems ever.

Inventory and ordering lead times
sheath replied to Rozz522's topic in 2020-2026 Silverado HD & Sierra HD
That's a full day of travel, and probably $100 in gas. But if you set up the meeting agenda before you go, and get buy in from the dealership, it may be the best day and $100 you'll spend. -

sheath replied to Rozz522's topic in 2020-2026 Silverado HD & Sierra HD
I don't have any connections with GM. Have you tried to sit down with the dealership General Manager in his/her office, and explain your lack of confidence in the truck that is on order? Maybe they have an order in they could modify to fit your needs. Or maybe (s)he'd be willing to make calls on your behalf. -
On the whistle noise: There is a thread on this forum where a few guys were working to determine the whistle that comes from the hood area of the GMC. One of the guys was using painter's tape to figure out the noise, and a way to resolve. There were pictures posted in the thread of where the tape was applied. Can't find that thread now. Not sure if it was in troubleshooting, or the general forum. From the thread it seems the noise is specific to the Sierra/Denali, not Silverado due to the difference in grill/hood. ETA: Found the thread. Hope it is helpful.

Steering sound at idle normal?
sheath replied to RJ2500's topic in Troubleshooting, Warranty & Recalls
Could have sworn I saw a TSB on this explaining to techs that the noise is normal, and not to spend time diagnosing. It was either a link or embedded in another thread on this forum. Now I can't find it... Funny story (at least I hope you all get a laugh). I'm driving from Winnemucca, NV to Roseburg, OR. in my new '22 3500. This trip is mostly two lane road in the middle of nowhere. All the sudden I start hearing this static noise from around the steering column. I had done a lot of research before picking up the truck, and this is one thing that came up. So I hear this static and I'm thinking... "Great, my truck is normal!" About 45 minutes later that static turned into a radio station. I had forgot the radio was on real low, and somewhere lost signal... lol ETA: This is the thread I was thinking of. Not sure the document being referenced is a TSB though. -
Traded in 1500 for 2500
sheath replied to Jagerschnapps1's topic in 2020-2026 Silverado HD & Sierra HD
Your 1500 is one sexy beast. I'm betting it won't be too long before your new truck starts getting some "upgrades". I really like the Custom model. It comes with some great options that make it look good and work hard. How do you like the ride and handling compared to your 1500? Agree with you, that the new 6.6 gas engine does really well. I also like the way the transmission shifts. It feels like it makes the best of the torque curve. Congrats on the new truck! -
Agree with 22z712500. But then I "need" the payload. What really helped me decide was doing an honest (and humbling) evaluation on what I was really going to do. Once I got honest with myself, picking the truck and options was easy. Something else to consider if you drive a lot is fuel programs. There are programs for both diesel fuel and gasoline. That may also help your decision. Good luck which ever way you go.

There are a couple of guys on here who have campers, and were discussing what they've done for a rear camera without a tailgate. Here is one: Another JR came up with a really clean solution for the rear view in this thread. Fuel mileage... Yeah, that's a good question. From what I've "read", it seems a general consensus is 14-15 mpg. But you may find more complete info, along with some work arounds to get better mileage. I don't drive enough for this to be an issue yet. But we keep getting gouged at the pump, and I may reconsider... lol On a side note, I added the Snow Plow/Camper package. That may not be the best choice unless the truck will get some kind of attachment on the front. The reason I say this is that when I was researching the dual alt/battery system, according to the schematics, there is a relay which gets electrically connected to the Snow Plow electrics, in order to supply input for the aux alternator to function. I've been too busy to actually look at this on my truck. If it is I have a work-around by removing the relay and using a jumper in it's place. But, that could cause an issue with warranty consideration if I were to have an electrical failure in the warranty period. So maybe not the best choice for everyone. The schematics only show this for the snowplow package, not the Camper package by itself. Good luck with your choice. I've been really enjoying the truck.

Mount for ham radio face plate
sheath replied to VE6CPU's topic in 2020-2026 Silverado HD & Sierra HD
@VE6CPU sorry for horning in on your thread. Got excited when tbullly mentioned using the proclip with the Icom, as I've had great experience with their products, but didn't realize they made one for our trucks. -

Mount for ham radio face plate
sheath replied to VE6CPU's topic in 2020-2026 Silverado HD & Sierra HD
Any chance you might have a picture you could share? I have the same radio, and have used ProClip in the past on a Jeep Rubicon. Very nice quality. Also would really like to know how you handled the antenna install? BTW: Love that radio. I caught a conversation over D-Star with a guy on the east coast talking with guy in S. Korea. Would be nice if Kenwood, Yaesu and Icom could agree on a single standard in that regard.
