HID Headlight Bulbs / HID Projector Retrofit
Spurshot replied to MotoMedic's topic in Modifications & Accessories
I received my Morimoto 35w/5000k kit yesterday and did a quick and dirty install last night. Got it working late and drove around the local area. Definitely bright. Beams seem to have a small amount of unevenness. It's hard to describe... It's brightest in the center as it should be and then as you look outward from the center, it has light and dark "stripes". It was late. I was tired. But the beams don't seem well focused in the factory projectors. I pulled up to a wall on side of a building, there were no "angel eyes". BTW, I called my order in. We talked about my truck and options. We also talked about Phil at Fast Headlights and his installation of projectors on a Sierra. I decided to just order a kit for the factory projectors. The tech said I needed a capacitor lead between the OEM headlight circuit and the relay. He did not mention a Can-bus nor did the kit come with them. I didn't see any errors. No buzzing. Update: Today, I see a "check engine" light. Bummer, I guess I do need the Canbus harness. You'd think these guys would know when I ordered.- 3,363 replies

It might blow the fuse. The fuse should protect the wiring. -
2014 Sierra/Silverado Bulb Sizes
Spurshot replied to MotoMedic's topic in Modifications & Accessories
For CA members, here's the vehicle code. Some flexibility, but no way a 100 watt LED bar is legal here for highway use. From my read, none of the HID kits or aftermarket manufactured projectors are approved for CA use. You could make a case for using an OEM (real one) HID projector system off of another type of vehicle. http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/.html/veh_table_of_contents.html http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displaycode?section=veh&group=24001-25000&file=24400-24411 -
2014 SIERRA SLT FOG LIGHTS WITH HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHTS MODIFICATION This mod will let you use the fog lights on low beam same as factory. On and off with the fog light button. When the fog lights are turned on while on low beam, then the high beams are either flashed or turned on and then off, the fog lights remain on when going back to low beam. When the high beams headlights are switched on, the fog lights come on also. You cannot shut the fog lights off with the high beams on. When going back to low beam, the fog lights go off if they were off prior to switching high beams on. Find the BCM under the dash, just to the left side of the steering column, right behind and above the OBD2 connector. It's a black box about 7" square and an inch thick. It will have 7 connectors in the lower edge of various colors. Pull the BROWN connector loose. There is a little tab you need to squeeze inward to release it. Look at it closely, there are tiny numbers at the corners to give you pin location reference. Use my attached connector photo and the numbers on the connector, along with the colors of the wires to locate the proper wires. Locate pin #10 with the Brown and White striped wire. This is the Fog light signal wire for the relay. Locate pin #18 with the Brown and Violet striped wire. This is the High Beam signal wire for its relay. Take a 1N4004 diode and push the wire lead of the diode in along side the wires with a pair of needle nose pliers. You need to push hard to get it to slide in about 1/4" so it will stay snug. Make sure the marked end of the diode (stripe) is toward the High Beam. You can put a piece of electrical tape over the bare diode leads or you can slip a piece of heat shrink over the diode before you install it and shrink it after pushing it in. But there's really no need as these are switched Ground leads, not power. Put the BROWN connector back in the BCM. YOU'RE DONE. THAT'S IT. The BCM is behind this area This is the BCM. In this picture, my arrows point to the rows to intersect the proper wires. The diagram below shows the connector oriented as you see it in the photo above so you can locate the correct pins. Rectifier Diodes are available at any electronics store or Radio Shack. http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2036270&znt_campaign=Category_CMS&znt_source=CAT&znt_medium=RSCOM&znt_content=CT2032230

OK, After struggling thru the schematics and online mods of past models all evening, I figured it out. This is for a Sierra and should be the same for the Silverado. It involves pushing one Diode into the backside of a connector on the BCM, jumping between two wires. That's it! Piece of cake. This mod will let you use the fog lights on low beam same as factory. It works great. More later. I took pics and have the connector pin schematic .

Here's the circuit. BCM is between the dash switch and the fuse/main buss as I suspected.

My take on this mod is that it jumps the relays, which are most likely downstream from the BCM, and no matter what the BCM is doing the power is switched to the fogs. I dont think the BCM is between the main fuse panel and the lights. I downloaded the wiring diagrams from GMupfitter.com so I'll check it out. http://www.gmupfitter.com/

This was on the Duramax forum. I believe it is for a GMT 900. But the principles are likely applicable to a K2. Use this information cautiously. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "This is a write-up for how to make your low beams and/or fog lights stay on when you switch to high beams...This mod costs all of about $1 and should take no more then 15 minutes..its very very easy and use's the trucks own built in fuses and relays. Credit for this goes to Will from duramax diesels...i just made some additions and modifications.. All you need is a set of diodes that you can get from your local Radio Shack. The part number that I used was 1N4004. I have read that 4001,4002,4003 and 4004 will all work. These diodes come in a 2 pack and cost $.97. You will do this mod under the hood at the fuse block on the drivers side of the truck. Make sure that the truck is off before reaching in there. You shouldn't need to unhook the batteries or anything like that. On the bottom of the relays is the numbers for the different pins. You will be using the 85 pin for these mods. Also, on the bottom of the lid of the fuse block is a diagram showing the numbers of the pins along with which relay goes where. The 3 relays that are used are in the lower left hand corner of the fuse block Hi-lows on at the same time. You will need to connect the 85 pin of the low beams relay to the 85 pin on the hi beams relay. Make sure that the "bottle cap (or end with the stripe)" is going towards the hi beam relay. You can either wrap the wire around the metal pin or slide it into the hole that the pin goes into. Either will work. Hi-fog on at the same time. For some reason GM decided that when your high beams are on, your fog lights don't need to be(actually i believe this is a law) . Well I like my fog lights on adding more light. With the hi beams on adding a lot of light, then the fog lights on adding more light can't be a bad thing right? To do this you will need to connect the 85 pin of the fog lights to the 85 pin of the hi beams. Make sure that the "bottle cap (or striped end)" is going towards the hi beam relay. Again you can either wrap the wire around the pin or push it into the hole that the pin goes into. If you are doing the lows plus the fogs it can be a little tight on the 85 pin of the hi beam pin. For this I wrapped one diode around the pin and the other got pushed into the hole with the pin(i pushed both into the slot...they fit you just need to push down hard on the relay) . You will still have control of your fog lights on low by switch but by doing this the fog lights will always be on with hi beams. This Mod works perfectly with HID's as well as regular bulbs. The pic shows how I have it wired. Sorry for the poor picture but hopefully the labels will help better explain things. the second pic is what the diode pack looks like from radioshack..its on the left

HID Headlight Bulbs / HID Projector Retrofit
Spurshot replied to MotoMedic's topic in Modifications & Accessories
I ordered a Morimoto kit (ballasts and bulbs, etc) for the stock projector. I'll try them out to see if they will do enough to keep me happy. I'm going to supplement them with a set of 2 Baja Designs SII long range spot lights and 2 SII wide cornering lights, all 2160 lumens each. So, I should have enough light for most anything I can think of with about 15,000 lumens and very well controlled in the LEDs. Anyone need a set of 25w 5202/PS24 Fog Light HIDs, I have some NIB for sale. http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/162691-5202ps24-25watt-fog-light-hid-kit/- 3,363 replies

HID Headlight Bulbs / HID Projector Retrofit
Spurshot replied to MotoMedic's topic in Modifications & Accessories
For me, it isn't the "difficulty" that gives me pause. I've stripped cars completely down to a shell, rebuilt engines, transmissions, diffs, body and paint work, etc.. But, I use my truck for my daily 40 mile a day commuter as well as for long road trips across the country and back-country off-roading. Reliability is a THE top consideration for me on any mod I do. I have been standing on the side of the road between BF Egypt and no-where with the hood up enough times that I consider what modifications I do very carefully and who does them. I googled HID retrofit reviews and found some pretty ugly stuff. Shelling out $1200 for a set of headlights wouldn't change my life one way or another nor cause any hardship. However, I know it's different for others. My concern is that it could ruin my much valued hunting and vacation trips if a serious problem occurred during one of them. I don't have much patience for things that don't work as advertised.- 3,363 replies

HID Headlight Bulbs / HID Projector Retrofit
Spurshot replied to MotoMedic's topic in Modifications & Accessories
Did you use the dealer locator on TRS? No disrespect to Ben, as his is a generous offer. But I'd pick the most respected installer and ship them 2 day air to wherever they are. Unfortunately, many so-called professionals are part time home garage mechanics in this business, probably due to the fact that the volume of retrofits is just not consistent. Find a real business that guarantees their work. Some of the disclaimers I read on "professional" retrofitter sites would deter me from having them wash my truck, let alone hack into $1200 worth of my headlights. Basically, some of them take no responsibility whatsoever for anything. Find a well respected one and use your credit card to pay so you have some recourse for dispute resolution.- 3,363 replies

Disabling Daytime Running Lights (DRL)
Spurshot replied to LTZTom's topic in Modifications & Accessories
I think my 99 1/2 GMT800 had a position for OFF. If so, it'd be interesting to see if they are interchangeable. -

I wonder how difficult it would be to disassemble the headlight switch and remove the spring feature that prevents leaving it in the OFF position? -
Adding rear center seat headrest for crash safety
Spurshot replied to B&J Aviation's topic in Modifications & Accessories
Just some more thoughts...in the interest of keeping your kids safe you might consider not letting them ride there until you're happy with a solution. That being said, a piece of 3-4" thick expanded polyethylene foam is super light and firm. Cut a piece to the appropriate size and carpet tape it to the back window. 5 min fix and while it's ugly, it will do the job. Spend a little more time on it and cover it with something that pleases you or get it upholstered and its a done deal for a quick fix. -
Adding rear center seat headrest for crash safety
Spurshot replied to B&J Aviation's topic in Modifications & Accessories
I have no interest in doing anything for my truck, but I would think an upholstery shop could make up a decent matching headrest that could be innovatively secured when needed and removed and stored under the seat. I'd think something that strapped to the two outer headrests and had a plastic plate that slid behind the seatback would be enough. I'd concentrate on keeping it very light to reduce its inertia in a crash. -

I like that you're doing something other than flat black wheels. I just can't warm up to the flat black wheel look. The wheels just disappear when they're flat black and the style of the wheel doesn't show. Is that a bronze? Black truck? Should look classy. -
Removal of Front Air Dam
Spurshot replied to Luster's topic in 2014-2018 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
I took the dam thing off the 08 sometime before the first hunting trip in it. I've left the dam thing on this 2014 for now. I have no off-road trips planned until the hunting season anyway. Maybe I'll take the dam thing off for the hunting season and put it back on for the rest of the year. Or maybe I'll do nothing and see how long the dam thing stays on when off-roading. -
The lights available today are incredible. I remember tooling around the California desert in a 67 VW with a 6volt system and two lights that you could hardly see past the bumper with. Later we discovered K C Hilites. This little company was taking light airplane 12v sealed beam landing light bulbs and making housings for them to mount on off-road vehicles. 4 100 watt KC Hilites would ignite the night, but your alternator was working overtime and they died early. Wiring and switches carried full current. Wires were big gauge. So this is one old guy that is amazed when a LED assembly with a few 1" reflectors drawing 1/4 of the current, puts out the same light as a 7" landing light.

Neat way to do the installation. No wiring thru the firewall and no switches in the dash to install.
