Vehicle Details 2023 GMC Sierra Denali with a LZ0 3.0L Duramax Diesel. It has 7,300 miles in total. Issue DEF Level indicator not reporting proper fluid level. At startup, with DEF tank full, the center dash display shows “DEF Range 200 mi”. If the level drops by one gallon below full, the display shows “DEF Level Empty” and you can not use any of the other center dash displays. It locks the display and only shows “DEF Level Empty”. Appointment With Dealer After arriving for my appointment and explaining the above for the second time, 1 hour and 20 minutes, they said I was all set. They didn’t perform SB # 22-NA-150. They reset the DEF system and cleared its data. This seems to have corrected the issue, but I’m not confident that this is a long-term solution. The DEF level indicator still is reading less than full when the tank is, like it will show no higher than ¾ full. Anyone else having this issue? Any long term fix?

Has anyone been successful in finding an actual spec from GM in “normal” usage for DEF fluid? I have a 2022 Chevy 1500 duramax 3.0L. It has 3300 miles on it and has used 11.5 gallons of DEF. Dealer says this is normal and also says GM does not have a spec. So how can we know what’s normal if there is no spec. The truck gets 32 mpg without the trailer and 16 with it. My DEF usage is 8% of fuel usage. Everything I find online says it should be about 2% of fuel usage.

Dears, I bought my 2017 Chevy Colorado Duramax Z71 brand new and I just love it. I was super satisfied with the performance and features of the truck. Due to the nature of my job, I had to move outside the U.S for a long mission to Africa, so I took my truck with me. Here started my nightmare. Just few days of use, I had the famous warning message regarding the quality of gas (DEF). I changed several brands of DEF but no success! I read somewhere that the shelf life of the product is key for the quality of the fluid. Now my truck is kind of locked, I am allowed to drive 6 Miles/h, it means it is not working. The worse thing is that there is no GM, Chevrolet store to assist. I was thinking to delete the whole DEF system if possible since the location where I am based is not regulated by the gas emissions. I will be very grateful if you could assist as I am suffering without my car. Thanks for your help.

Chevrolet recommends AC Delco Diesel Exhaust Fluid in 2021 Sliverado HD Duramax. Is their a difference in AC Vs Blue? Most Stores don't carry AC brand.. is it worth ordering online or is any DEF fluid okay?

I just broke 2000 miles on my new silverado 3500 duramax. After towing on are rally cold, -15f degree day def gauge read 30%. I know it was full when bought. Dealer went to top it off and it only took .25 gal. Long story short it reset itself after 3 days and dropping to 29%. Today I towed and the low I saw was -18 F. Gauge is reading at 30% again and I know its wrong. Is this a common issue? If its cold related could it be a bad sensor? Will replacing it fix it? I will really be upset if it causes speed to be limited when def is not actually low. One day it was -20 and truck had sat for over 24 hrs and wouldnt start. I plugged it in and it started a few hours later. It kind of sucks having to open the hood to plug it in. Dealer said gm does it on purpose so the plug doesnt get covered in dirt/ice. Any solutions for this? My friend has a gmc 3500 and it's run through the grill. Thanks in advance. I am stoked on the power of this truck but concerned as its having a few glitches and is brand new.

I just bought a used 2021 AT4 with the 3.0 with about 3,800 miles. This is my first diesel but I have read a ton of documentation, forums and Facebook groups specific to the 3.0 Duramax. When I got the truck I scrolled through all of the information in the DIC. I noticed that the DEF gauge is a about a third full. I figured the previous owner may have done a lot of towing with it because at 3,800 miles it should not be that low. Am I correct in that assumption? Should I go ahead and fill it up or wait until the truck tells me to? How much do I fill it? Until full? Thanks!

My 2016 Sierra 2500HD has 176,000 miles on it already and recently started eating parts. The latest part to fail was the reductant tank heater (DEF Heater). Upon cold start the check engine light came on with code P21DD. After a little reading I learned that this can result in “Limp Mode”. I was in the middle of nowhere in Northern Wyoming. Not cool! I drove down to Denver and replaced it that week. I shot this video of the repair.....

Sorry in advance for length, but several problems and have not shared everything about them!!!! ?? Am I crazy? are there ghosts? is any of it real? and it all leads to trust! I know new vehicles have a lot of electronics and they are harder to track down when it only happens occasionally. To me it is the most frustrating to go to the dealer and say this happened, I heard this, the truck did this! and they come back with "Mechanic checked it out thoroughly and everything is OK!" You drive off asking yourself did I really see this? did I do something? did I hit a switch I shouldn't have? The dealer tells you "If it is intermittent, unless we see it here, we cant fix it" And now my Problem, search for help, and seeing if anyone else has seen this? 1. 2020 GMC Sierra Denali 2500HD 6.6 Duramax Diesel. (Which driving off the lot I was so happy about) at about 200 miles I was diving around and noticed that the display in the cluster changed! I thought it was something I did and kind of ignored it. At 300 miles took it to the dealer, and explained the problem, got that look that says he doesn't want to look at it dummy! Later picked it up and was told I was problem, I must be doing it as mechanic says it is all good. and got told if it ain't doing it when you bring it in we wont find it unless it gives code! Left dealer but made sure display was at a known reference point. Later I saw it was at a different display again, so I did something you don't do often, got the manual out and read up on this. I leave the display on the economy setting just to see how It is doing and as a reference. Well it did do it and over time got worse! But not often enough to get the sound of "If it ain't doing it when you come in we won't find anything" I tried bumpy roads, hitting steering wheel, left turn, right turn, bump and turn, even took two boxes and taped over the switches on steering wheel. (Keeps the ghost out) anyway still changes, random and even saw it do it when shutting off, just as i pushed off button! Didn't repeat so dint take in.7,000 miles and dealer still says it must be me as Mechanic says no problems. But now read on as more ghosts appear! 2. DEF fluid, it is going someplace, that I know as I am feeding it to my truck and it keeps drinking. First incident was in Oklahoma, stopped, fueled up and filled DEF tank. Headed down the road and after Liver and cheese sandwich, singing to my self (about 100 - 120 miles) this thing called a Information display announced "DEF getting low" so I looked to see next fuel stop, and let the DEF display on, which said 4 green boxes above the empty (There are 8 boxes on display) My mind thought why and my analytical side said may go to a detail mode that shows more boxes before empty??? (Which I don't think it does) anyway 28 to 35 miles I watched one light after another go out as i pulled into the station. It took 6 gal to fill bought 3 of the blue Platinum, 2 full ones = 5 gal and about another gallon of the third. Now being a new to diesels guy thought this must be a "REGEN" ? which I have only seen displayed once since owning at around 400 to five hundred miles. I reading the manual again, and asking around i have been told that with only 8,000 miles on the truck, that my 17 to 19 gal of DEF fluid is high. (in history I had a check engine light and service message come on and stayed on two days then just went away, dealer I I stopped at said no codes, about 3,000 miles) Now in all this time I got a check engine light and service message again 7,000 miles, so took to dealer and in keeping truck for two days they couldn't find the reason but codes showed fuel heater! (BTW dealer said ck engine light was off next morning but showed codes, service light still on) ordered parts and to take it. (Four days of driving and service engine display stayed on the 4th day the service orange light came on. What happened next is combined with number 3 below.... Dealer replaced parts and i am again driving... I was told they have no explanation for DEF, and there is no gauge in DEF tank. ( So how does it know when getting low?) and why would that affect usage? 3. OK, what is next is mixed in with what you read above. On the road again with service message still on waiting for parts i went out to start truck and hit the switch, engine turning over and over and over, not starting and knowing something was wrong, hit the button again and kept cranking, seemed like at least 10 to 15 seconds and stopped on it's own. waited a few minutes and thought should i try again? I did and cranked for at least 5 to 8 seconds and started! whew, I took off and all seemed OK. stopped was in on business about 2 hours and came out and trucked cranked for again at least 5 seconds and started. good to go? well few miles latter stopped at Starbucks, came back out and engine started as normal! Put in reverse and camera came on, put in drive and took off. Few thousand feet and camera in back still on. I wanted navigation so I hit the home button, nothing, at 1/4 mile or more it switched at some point to front camera so i looked and found a turn in stop point at about 1 mile camera still to front and turned off truck. restarted and waited until all the screens settled. Put in reverse backed out and drive camera switched to front, driving again and seemed ok as camera went off about 1/4 to 1/3 mile navigation on.. I am good? Nope pulled up and in traffic and screen switched to front camera. I am watching traffic as i want to get off highway and check this out, when i noticed orange light in right mirror say vehicle there , but there wasn't any there in mirror glanced at left and orange light on, no cars either side so moved off road and as i stopped i saw center display changing screens like a deck of cards. Ok truck is now giving me the willies! took to dealer they put in parts and said no codes no problems, could not explain DEF usage said maybe part replaced. could not duplicate cranking so said no problem, said camera s OK not a problem so basically looked at me like I was an idiot and truck is OK. 4. Now i am at the point of TRUST, do you trust a life in a truck that does weird things? doesn't leave a trail, and makes you feel like no one believes you these problems happen? A. Cranking has occurred now three times in life of truck, last time it happened after parts replaced! B. center display has acted up since beginning, changing on its own, and the weird time it just kept changing. C. display not going off, locked on camera and or screen getting frozen on a certain display. once on cameras, once on apps, twice on phone screen. Finally was close to dealer and they got to see stuck screen and no touching or button combination would change it. (Waiting to hear form service manager) D. High DEF usage? or is it normal? since beginning. F. Center information Display going off twice with second time going off and back on after 15 to 30 miles, then off, but still random screen changes. G. last but not least is Trans temp. Something i don't normally look at if not towing. First time i saw was flat road and was changing screens it was at 260 i was at 75 and temp outside was at 85, i watched it drop to 170 after 30 miles and stayed that way for about 50 miles and stopped watching. Next time was at outside temp of about 70 75 degree, trans went fro 195 to 280 for about 10 miles and started dropping back to 165 then up to 195 then back to 165... don't watch it all the time but was told it was good and not outside of specs... My question why such a big fluctuation? and why change at all when not towing? So HELP,!!!! anyone else seeing odd things like this? How do you trust a vehicle that does this? Am I over reacting? is it a ghost? And my final question is what if something in the communications system, computer, was to go haywire? could it cause a situation that could cause an accident, loss of life and no one would ever know as the mechanic always says "Looks good, NO problems, NO codes" Sorry for length, but tried to keep it brief and still tell most of the story! every few weeks it seems like something new shows up!

TL;DR: I drove 2,941 miles from South Florida to Southern California in my brand new Sierra 1500 AT4 Duramax and pulled my 4,400lbs pound boat. I experienced no drivetrain issues other than running out of gas which was my own fault. I kep the rpms mostly at 1500-2100, averaged 12.6 mpg, consumed 11-12 gallons of DEF and had no cooling issues under the load and in the 118F heat of the Californian desert for the prolonged time I was driving. The trailering app and trailer tire TPMS system paid for itself and was a great tool for safety! DEF gauge may not be accurate to read when towing, rather go by the mileage warnings that display on the dash. Adaptive cruise control disengaged briefly but was able to re engage after turning the truck off and back on again. I am very satisfied with the performance I experienced and overall truck and have had no issues thus far with the drivetrain (6,054 miles on the clock). Hey y'all, I wanted to put some info out there about the trip I just made this week from Boca Raton, FL to San Diego, CA in my brand new 1500 AT4 Diesel to include performance numbers, issues I encountered, good, bad, and otherwise. I was a little on edge seeing as I did a decent amount of research on the new duramax before I bought it in July and there are definitely some issues out there that are yet to be addressed, however I had to move for my new job so here goes. Google Maps put the trip at 2,611 miles (4,202km) from my parents driveway to my new place but my trip clock read 2,941 miles (4,733km) due to stopping in to see some family along the way. I had 3,110 miles (4,989km) on the clock before I left. Note that my backseat was full of boxes and my bed was mostly empty except a weatherproof toolbox because I don't have a tonneau cover yet and did not want my items exposed to the elements or sticky fingers for the five days I was on the road. I was also towing my boat which is a 20 foot center console on a tandem axle trailer with dual axle hydraulic surge brakes. The boat and trailer combo weighs 4,400lbs (1995 kg) as indicated by the weigh scale I stopped at in California and my WeighSafe drop hitch with tongue scale. I spent the overwhelming majority of my time at ~1500 rpm while on cruise control at 67-mph but would jump to ~2100 when gradually accelerating. I left on Sunday afternoon and drove 225 miles (362km) to Daytona Beach, FL mostly uneventful despite my DEF warning popping up saying I had a 1000 mile range. On Monday, I drove 514 miles (827km) uneventfully seeing some family and friends in the Panhandle of Florida. The only eventful part of this leg of the journey was the DEF message popping up in the morning saying I had a 300 mile range approximately 150 miles after the 1000 mile warning and a speed limited soon message shortly after the 300 mile message. I figured I would use more DEF while towing but I hadn't put much thought into exactly how much I would use while planning my trip. I will talk more about DEF later. Tuesday I drove 537 miles (864km) from Milton, FL to Houston, TX uneventfully. Somewhere around San Antonio, TX I got a message that adaptive cruise control has disengaged. I was able to switch to regular cruise control but still don't know why that happened. I was able to re engage adaptive cruise control later in the day after I turned off the truck at a fuel station. Any thoughts would be appreciated here if you have experienced something similar. Wednesday is where the fun started. About halfway between Houston and Fort Stockton (508 miles, 817km) I got a low trailer tire pressure message on my dash. My truck came with 4 trailer tpms sensors I had installed into 4 new tires on the trailer about a week before I left because I figured why not. the tires are filled to 50psi as per the sticker on the trailer and the message showed front right had 35 psi. I figured all was fine and it was an error message as I had already driven over 1000 miles with no issues but I decided to stop and check at the next exit as I noticed the pressure was steadily declining. I pulled off at a Love's and went to check and could hear the air coming out but couldn't see a nail or feel the air. Regardless (after re parking in the shade at 102F outside), I took the tire off and lo and behold found a 3 inch nail in the tread near the edge of the tire. Within 15 minutes I had it plugged, refilled, reinstalled, and ready to go. That right there ladies and gentlemen justified the $85 I paid to install the sensors. Had I not known of the diminishing air pressure I surely would've had a blowout at the most inconvenient location and had to put a spare on in the heat. So that sold me on the trailer tire TPMS system, cost to install already paid for itself by saving me from having to buy a replacement tire. On Thursday, the plan was to go from Fort Stockton, TX to Tucson, AZ (558 miles, 898km). I was about 30 miles away from my next planned fuel stop when my fuel level low light came on but I didn't think anything of it as I would be stopping about 20 miles before I ran out of fuel. When I pulled off at the only fuel station in the area (Akela, NM) which GasBuddy showed had diesel, I discovered much to my dismay that the station did not have a diesel pump. I knew I was probably screwed but didn't really have a choice but to shoot for Deming, NM which was 24 miles down the road. My fuel level read low so I reduced speed to improve economy and hoped for the best. Worst case scenario I run out of fuel much closer to an actual city which would reduce the time it took for a fuel delivery service to reach me. 5 miles out of Akela, a car flags me down and says something blew off my boat so I pulled over and saw that my bimini top had blown off. I figured my best course of action was to drop the boat on the side of the road and turn back and try to find it. because there was no way I'd make it to Deming after turning around with the boat. Anyways, I had to go back about 3 miles to get the bimini from the middle of the road before going back. I decided to leave the boat, get fuel, and come back for it. The boat has a tracker so I could ensure it didn't get stolen plus i had 2 tongue locks on it. I made it about 12 miles before I heard a sound from the engine that sounded like i hit debris on the road, a message popping up that said speed limited, pulled over and kept the engine idling while I inspected the truck for damage and could see none. I turned off the truck to restart it and try to get back on the highway but it wouldn't crank. I called roadside assistance from the myGMC app and a guy called me to confirm that I needed diesel and was out to me from Deming in about 20 minutes. Fueled up, started, but had a check engine light so I brought it to the Chevy dealer in Deming to get checked out and ensure there was nothing seriously wrong other than running out of fuel. It was just some computer errors from running out of fuel, had them cleared, and left for no charge. Filled my tank at the nearest fuel station, turned around got my boat, and continued on my way after a 3 hour delay and made it to Tucson just in time for happy hour! Friday, I finished my trip to San Diego about 407 miles (655km) uneventfully despite temperatures reaching 118F outside. I was monitoring engine temp which was regulating well between 190 and 205 and tranny temp which kept between 185 and 203 depending on the grade. No issues at all with cooling or performance. Honestly the torque was really impressive on the 6% grade that stretched about 35 miles up and down. By the time it was all said and done, i averaged 12.6mpg for the entire trip although I was getting about 14-16 after I had the bimini top stowed in the bed on the truck reducing the drag of the boat. I had to put in about 11-12 gallons of DEF throughout the trip to top off my tank at the end. I found that the DEF gauge was not displaying accurate levels because when it displayed red Low and no bars it took 4 gallons before overflowing despite the tank being about 5 gallons. The range of the DEF was not linear. It showed 300 mile range at 5 bars but dropped to red and low almost immediately after reaching that point. I learned to go by mile range not necessary gauge level and just fill up at the 300 mile range message. I am satisfied with the fuel economy i saw and was very satisfied with the performance and power available when needed thanks to the diesel. Overall very satisfied with the performance of this truck as I have had no issues with the drivetrain (knock on wood). Feel free to ask me specific questions and I will answer them as soon as I see them!

Who has deleted their EGR and was it worth it performance wise as well as financial? Do you need to buy a tuner if you do? Do you recommend a tuner instead of an egr delete? Thanks for any advise

I now have 6,000 miles on my 2017 Duramax. Twice now I have had the 30% DEF caution come on and at the same time have had DEF mileage remaining warnings showing only 130 miles and 160 miles. On both occasions, the DEF level went from 30% to reading "Low" after about 50 miles, along with the caution that says something like "DEF Low - engine will soon be speed limited". In my 2015 Duramax, 30% DEF corresponded to approx 1000 miles remaining, now it seems to correspond to about 150 miles remaining. Also, assuming that the DEF tank was full when I got the truck and again full after a service where they said they topped up the DEF tank, both times I got the 30% DEF light after about 1000 miles of towing a 7500 lb travel trailer. I have now used 4 tanks of DEF in 6,000 miles (most of those miles towing the 7500lb travel trailer) Is this normal? Anyone else seeing this behavior? P.S. The first time this happened, I had to find DEF in the middle of nowhere, Montana, and filled up with some unknown brand of DEF. Shortly after I got a CEL The code was P0821). This happened again 3000 miles later. The fix, applied after the second incident) according to Chevy dealer was to reprogram the TCM and ECM.

I recently purchased a 2016 Silverado 3500 with the 6.6l duramax. The engine has 180,000km and today while driving I recieved a message on the dic saying service diesel exhaust fluid 120km until 104km/hr top speed. I checked the DEF fluid it is full to the top. As I drive the truck the dic starts to count down the km until 104km/hr max speed. I tried disconnecting both batteries thinking it isn't sensing the def tank being full? No luck. The engine light is also on with a u029e, u029e (ps) and u029e(pd) code. Has anyone had this issue before? TIA. Qu
