At today's Consumer Electronics show, Mary Barra, GM's CEO, and now also Chairman, announced “The Bolt EV is capable of using the latest mobile app technology to enable car sharing, advanced GPS routing and gamification, all designed to enhance the ownership experience now and into the future.” Nobody cares a hoot about any of that though. What is important is that Chevy has a viable product that it says is ready to go as of the end of this year and can offer buyers 200 miles of EV range in a price range that most American families can afford. Tesla, who has been crowing about an affordable battery electric vehicle insufferably, does not have a new car to show off this year.

The new 2017 Bolt is a real vehicle. It is no longer a rumor. GM's press release today included "...will go into production by the end of 2016." GM brought a Bolt to the show and offered rides around the parking lot, a common practice for pre-production vehicles awaiting launch. The five-passenger hatchback Bolt has a large greenhouse and a steeply-raked windshield. Like the Toyota Prius and Kia Soul EV, the inside is very Spartan and clean. We will wait a little longer to comment on all the goodies. Things tend to change between a first reveal and a production-ready model.

Chevy isn't reinventing the wheel with the Bolt. It uses a flat floor with an integrated battery like most modern EV designs. What Chevy is doing is leveraging its financial strength, engineering might and buying power to jump into a space that the other guy in town has been talking about (and talking about, and talking about...).
