2014+ Gas Mileage (MPG) Topic
Snoringbear replied to BringTheRain403's topic in Engines & Drivetrain
Agree about Kroger gas. I’ve been using it as my primary source for about fifteen years except when traveling and have never had an injector problem with any of my vehicles and usually have three or four on the tab at any given time. I do wish though that Kroger would participate in the Top Tier program. But, on the other hand the store where I shop and buy gas does a huge volume so there’s no worries about stale gas. Anyway, I like the Kroger point system which I usually accumulate for filling my 6.2 Silverado. My way of fuel cost management, lol?.... -

About your GPS; I have a 2015 LTZ and as I recall several months ago I got an offer in the mail from GM to update my GPS map. Apparently, their map is stored locally on each vehicle and is not pulled from a cloud or some server. Being that roads are being built here in the DFW (Texas, God Bless Texas) area as fast as the concrete can be mixed I bought the update. Kinda pricey as I recall, about $200 I’m thinking. Anyway, maybe you need to load a more current map? -
I seriously doubt that the dealership “just patched” your condenser and then sold it back to you as an oem replacement unit. The legal risk for doing such a bone-headed act is so far off the charts it can’t be given serious consideration. About the silver tape; maybe hit it with a can of black spray paint?

Should GM Maintain the Column Shifter on Next Gen?
Snoringbear replied to mookdoc6's topic in Future GM News & Rumors
It seems to me that for work trucks, construction, Ranch, Farm, etc, where several people, crews and such may be in out a truck during the day, there’s a high risk that someone might stick the fob in their pocket and head off somewhere away from the truck. Whereas with a key setup the practice of leaving it in the ignition is ingrained. Maybe I’m wrong but seems to me a key ignition is better for multiple people situations. -
Who likes their 8 Speed?

How did you add fluid? Aren’t these trannys sealed? I know mine doesn’t even have a dip stick. And, assuming you figured out how to add/drain fluid does that void your warranty? -

Wish GM would go back to providing the option of either/or rear coil or leaf springs like they did 1967 ~ 1973. Or, maybe add another category to the Silverado line with coil rear springs. Maybe call it the City Slicker or Urban Cowboy, lol! A new, more modern look came in 1967, along with a new nickname: "Action Line". It was with this revision of the C/K truck that General Motors began to add comfort and convenience items to a vehicle line that had previously been for work purposes alone. The majority of 10 series and some 20 series Chevrolet trucks from 1967 to 1972 were equipped with a coil spring trailing arm rear suspension, which greatly improved the ride over traditional leaf springs. However, the leaf spring rear suspension was still available on those trucks, and standard on 30 series trucks. GMC-branded trucks came standard with leaf springs in the rear, with the coil spring/trailing arm design optional. All 2-wheel drive trucks came with independent front suspension, while 4x4's used a conventional solid axle with leaf springs. 1967 was the only year for the "small rear window" (RPO A10 offered a large rear window as a factory option[7]). The standard drivetrain was a three-speed manual transmission and one of two engines; the 250 in3 straight six or the 283 cu in (4.6 L) V8. Optional transmissions included a three speed overdrive unit (C-10 only) and several different four-speed manuals, the Powerglide 2-speed automatic, or the Turbo-Hydramatic 350 and 400 3-speed automatic. The 292 six and the 327 in3 V8 were optional engines. 10-series trucks came with a 6 x 5.5–inch bolt pattern, the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks came with an 8 x 6.5–inch bolt pattern. -

Hey Jesse, thought you were going to buy an Audi. Did you go through with it? -

Your shake showing up in the low speed range is where torque converter problems often occurs. I wouldn’t ignore that possibility. -

Hey Jesse, where ya been? Last time we chatted you were about to get out of your Ferd and get into an Audi. Did you do that and if yes how do you like it? I had an Audi about 100 years ago, about 1980 I think. As I recall, it was a five cylinder which should have been a clue from the get-go. Fun to drive but high maintenance, but that was a long time ago. Anyway, I’m very interested in the 2019 Silverado as it’s supposed to be new from the bottom up. Especially interested in checking out the magnetic ride option. We shall see. -

Torque Converter; had the same problem around 32,000 miles. There’s an SB out on it. Dealer did the service. No problem since. -
If a part has been modified it’s now a different part. So, it’s identified by date code or a suffix on part number perhaps a numeric or alpha such as -1 or -A.

Concerning your trucks differential ratio; if you still have your window sticker it’s listed on it. If you don’t have it go by the dealer service dept and they can pull up your vin number and tell you. Or, go see your salesman and he can print a new window sticker for you. I would suggest asking your salesman to print a new window sticker. That way, you’ll be able to easily see whenever you want the features and options that are on your truck. -

It’s my guess that GM is now completely focused on the upcoming 2019 models and is no longer interested in the problems with current generation trucks and suv’s. I drive a 2015 Silverado and other than having the ac condenser failure which was covered by warranty has been pretty much trouble free. Personally, I’m also interested in the 2019 Silverado or Sierra 1500, especially magnetic ride. Also, the platform is new and some harmonic buffers are designed in. So, seems to me GM is aware of ride problems and has taken steps to address them. And, haven’t seen any numbers yet but have seen hints that horsepower and torque has been bumped up on both the 5.3 and 6.2. Anyway, we shall see... -

Agree with most of the list, especially the Toyota’s. They build bullet proof engines as far as I’m concerned. I do question the F-150 being on the list though as I’m not sold on the Ecoboost just yet as I’ve read there’s problems when used as a serious work truck. Personally, I’ve been driving GM trucks since my 1975 Chev Blue Flame in-line six and have never lost an engine. Anyway, I’m starting to pay attention to what’s coming with the 2019 GM twins. Very interested in Magnetic Ride technology. -

Well, if someone who might be inclined to do so; could import the 789 pages into Excel or Access and do some analysis it would be interesting for sure. It’s my guess that it may have already been done by maybe GM or someone who’s employed by the owners of this forum. I think the first piece of data that would pop up is the old 80/20 rule applies. That being that 80% of the posts are made by 20% of the posters ?... -

Yeah, agree, appears steep to me too. I think there’s about three or four hours of labor in their calculation which seems excessive for a trained tech working on a vehicle up on a lift. But, like I said, it’s been several decades since I’ve done a DIY on shocks. And, I’m not starting again, lol! About the spring clamps, I guess I don’t understand the theory behind them. It seems to me that clamping the leafs down tight and compressing them against each other would make them even more rigid and thereby cause the truck to ride even rougher. But, I believe I’ve seen in this thread posters who’ve claimed it works. So, what do I know, nada! Let us know how it goes for you. If it improves your ride I might give it a try. -

Thinking about this shock too. I’m on 4 Wheel Parts mailing list so receive their catalog periodically. I talked to their local shop recently and was informed this is the correct shock for my truck considering want I want to achieve (smoother ride) and being it is stock and has no lift. Price quoted was $96.99 front, $79.99 rear ea. Total drive-away price, parts, labor, taxes, extended warranty was $864.33. Seemed kinda pricey to me. But, it’s been a looong time since I did a DIY shock replacement. How do these prices seem to you. -

I think the development of 10 spd tranny was a joint Ford/GM collaborative endeavor. So, presumably it should function about the same for both. Perhaps, some programming differences such as shift points, etc. just guessing though... -

Lots of folks believe the pushrod/cam in block engine is obsolete technology as compared to the DOHC engine. Actually, both designs date back to the turn of the 20th century. And, there are pros and cons for each. The pros for the pushrod is it’s lighter (exempting the true hemi elephant) and has a lower center of gravity, generally creates more torque (push) due to a slower burn rate. Pros for dohc is faster burn rate, more high rpm hp, no valve float to speak of, great for racing. So, the debate about which concept is better depends on usage and preference. Personally, for truck use I prefer the naturally aspirated pushroad. Just my two bits ?... -

Well, there's your problem! Chinese food on Christmas Eve? -
GM, I believe, continued building the 1954 truck line well into 1955. GM, concerned that the new 1955 model might be too radical for the liking of their truck market. However, when it became obvious that the 1955 would be a big hit the 1954 model was discontinued. Btw, the 1954/1955 is the preferred model of many collectors as they're the last of the line and fairly rare.

Geez, where did you come from? I want our old Admin back. He was a lot more fun. Lighten up and let boys be boys, let'em wrestle in the mud a little. After all, after 782 pages of circular discussions ain't nothing gonna get solved anyway. Hell, the new platform will be out in less than a year and this sub-forum will be pretty much dead anyway ?... -

Man oh man, I read your post about all the damage to your truck and have to say it definitely was your lucky day. What happened? Read your post about discovering the shakes in some Ram trucks. Was surprised to learn that Ram has the problem too. I know you've sworn of GM but wondering if you've driven a Sierra Denali with Magnetic Ride? I'm kinda interested in this system. Btw, I've never heard you mention towing or heavy hauling. So, maybe a smaller truck would work for you? Jeep is coming out with a pickup, might be interesting. Below is a link, good looking truck. http://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/future-cars/news/a32822/jeep-wrangler-pickup-late-2019/ well, good luck with your truck hunt. Let us know what you buy. SB -

Hey Jesse, sorry about your truck but glad that you're ok. I'm still driving my 2015 Silverado and still no Chevy Shake, fingers crossed, lol! About the Ram; I've driven one and it does ride smoother than either the Silverado or F-150. However, I think it's due to the rear coil springs more than the air lift setup. I personally though, don't like the way the truck sits if that makes any sense. Other than that I like the truck real well. If I were in your situation I might consider buying an old beater to drive till the 2019 GM T1XX comes out. I'm guessing the nefarious Chevy Shake will have been addressed in the new platform. -

I read some months ago that GM is phasing out contractor axle production in Mexico and is starting up an in-house line in Detroit. Not sure about the specifics, timing, etc.. But whoever is interested can Google it.
