For some, trucks are toys. For some, trucks are tools. If it's a tool, it needs to be the one that does the job the best. If it's a toy, it should be the one that provides the most enjoyment. -
2020 Silverado Idle RPM adjustment question
redwngr replied to PSUFAN's topic in 2019-2026 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
Vibration at idle... I still think it is in need of a repair. https://gm-techlink.com/?p=14637 Vibration or Rough Idle in Drive or Park April 13, 2021 A rough idle or vibration at idle may be present with the transmission in Drive or Park on some 2019-2021 Silverado and Sierra models equipped with the 5.3L V8 engine (PRO L82, L84) or 6.2L V8 engine (RPO L87). (Fig. 15) The idle condition may be most noticeable when the engine is completely warmed up and accessories are off. There may be several possible causes: misfire or an engine concern, wrong fuel used, idle speed fluctuation, or engine mount pre-load. Fig. 15 To correctly diagnose the potential sources of the idle condition, use the CH-51450 PicoScope oscilloscope following the procedures outlined in #PIP5798. Begin diagnosis by checking for stored DTCs. Any DTCs should be addressed first. Also confirm there are not any illuminated warning lamps on the instrument cluster. Next, monitor fuel trim readings and cylinder misfires to confirm there are not any engine concerns. Note the idle speed at this time. In addition, if premium fuel is required, confirm that it is being used instead of regular fuel. Perform an analysis using the PicoScope with a single axis sensor or a tri-axis sensor to measure the vibration disturbance frequency at the seat track. (Fig. 16) If the measurement is above the acceptable threshold, perform the Engine and Transmission Mount Settling Process covered in #PIP5798. Fig. 16 Any engine mount-to-frame bolts removed during this process must be replaced with new bolts. Both the left-hand and right-hand engine mounts need to be seated to the vehicle frame at the same time to ensure the best alignment. Do not use an impact wrench. Torque the new bolts to specification in sequence. (Fig. 17) Fig. 17 If the disturbance frequency measurement does not improve after completing the settling process, replace the powertrain mounts. Before replacing engine mounts, check that the exhaust system is not bound up and that the rear transmission mount is clear of any debris and not damaged. Either of these can result is a higher than normal PicoScope measurement. TIP: If the vibration condition was corrected following the procedures in #PIP5798, print and attach the “before and after” PicoScope measurements to the repair order. If the vibration condition is still not acceptable after completing the settling process or replacing the engine mounts, open a TAC case and attach your files to the case. Refer to #PIP5601A to upload the files. For parts information and complete details on the Engine and Transmission Mount Settling Process, refer to #PIP5798. -
Inside height on a 20/21 HD box is 21" Inside height on a 19/20/21 LD is 22.4" I guessing that means the tailgates are different. Google gets a bunch of hits for 'tailgate shield' and 'tailgate protector'

Let's Talk Retractable Bed Covers
redwngr replied to Transient's topic in Modifications, Wheels & Tires
I'm on my second RetraxONE MX. https://retrax.com/retraxone-mx GM decided to change the standard box size between '18 HD and '21 LD or I would've transferred the first one to this truck. MX is the manually operated one, with poly slats. I figured if there is a scratch if wont' as easy as the coated aluminum slats. Of course it's also cheaper. Not sure how it would fit around a sport bar. I find walking beside the truck pulling/pushing the latch handle makes for easier opening than trying to fold the panels on a folding one I had on 15 thru 18 standard bed trucks. Also nice that it will retract without opening the tailgate, and tailgate will open without opening the cover. It doesn't matter which is closed first. The folding one I had it was necessary to have the last fold lifted when closing the tailgate, and the tailgate had to be open to unlatch the cover for folding. It has a key lock in the latch. -
DEF is used whenever the engine is running. It is NOT a regen only item. During regen, the truck adds fuel directly to the exhaust to create the regen heat. It will add some extra DEF to respond to the extra NOx produced burning the extra fuel. If it's been 3000 miles since it was filled and the gauge still has all the LED's lit I'd agree it's probably not displaying correctly. Checked my gauge today. 4600 miles since it was filled and it has 3 of the LED's off (above the 1/2 mark there is still one lit -- book says it will hold 2 gallons after the next one goes out) iDash reports the level bouncing around 48-51%. (I'm expecting the next LED to turn off soon) Regens on this 3.0 are much more frequent than the were on the 6.6's I ran. They are also much shorter duration. It's usually somewhere in the 260 - 320 mile range between regens and they are lasting 10 - 13 miles running 2 lane highway speeds. Having said all that I'm not sure the def display is super accurate -- I'd expect it to have a least a couple of LED's turned off by now. Unless it's working really hard and using lots of fuel, it also be surprised if it needs def at 3000 miles. I'm expecting somewhere around 9000 miles til it tells me it's empty. Current plan is to run til it's empty and it starts giving the ' xx miles til speed limit' warnings.

265 or 275 or 305 is the width of the tire in millimeters (mm) Divide by 25.4 and you have the width in inches. The next number (50, 65, 90 etc) is the ratio of the sidewall height to the width. So a tire with a 75 is taller than a 65, IF the are the same width. 295/70 has a sidewall that is 295 x 0.70 = 206.5 mm (206.5/25.4 = 8.13) 285/75 will have 213.8 mm sidewall -- 8.41" --- so it will be taller than the 295/70 And the last number is the rim diameter in inches. Many of the tire chains and tire manufacturer websites have calculators giving data for single sizes and/or for comparing sizes.

Solar Battery Maintainer
redwngr replied to SilveradoRST's topic in 2019-2026 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
I'd be looking for a 'maintainer' from somebody like Deltran (makers of the Battery Tender brand) https://www.batterytender.com/ They make maintainers that are corded, and I think they also have solar powered ones. Doesn't take a very big maintainer to overcome the parasitic draw when 20 km one every couple months sure isn't much running. Probably not enough to even get the oil up to full operating temperature. Anyway, you could probably also put the truck back in 'Transport mode' to reduce the draw on the battery when truck is out of use. Info about Transport mode, and the normal BCM 'sleep' mode. Battery Saver Mode (Transport Mode) Battery saver mode (transport mode) reduces the parasitic load of some modules during overseas shipment or during vehicle storage conditions. This improves the drain time on the battery (up to 70 days without the battery going dead). When a vehicle is in transport/storage, some features may have reduced functionality while in the battery saver mode, such as disabling keyless entry, after blow, and content theft features. Battery saver mode is initiated by turning on the hazard flashers, applying the brake pedal, and then turning the ignition key to the start position or pushing the ignition mode switch with the foot on the brake for greater than 15 seconds. The mode is disengaged by repeating the previous process. The driver information center (if equipped) will display Transport Mode is On when battery saver mode is enabled and Transport Mode is Off when battery saver mode is disabled. For vehicles not equipped with a driver information center, the battery indicator light will constantly flash on the Instrument Cluster when battery saver mode is enabled. This feature can be used as many times as necessary if the vehicle is to be stored for an extended period of time. BCM Awake/Sleep States The BCM is able to control or perform all of the BCM functions in the awake state. The BCM enters the sleep state when active control or normal monitoring of system functions has stopped and a time limit has passed. The BCM must detect certain wake-up inputs before entering the awake state. The BCM monitors for these inputs during the sleep state. The BCM will enter the awake state if any of the following wake-up inputs are detected: • Activity on the serial data line • Detection of a battery reconnect • Any door open signal • Headlamps ON • Key-in-ignition • Ignition ON • Park lamps ON • Keyless entry or remote start message The BCM will enter a sleep state when all of the following conditions exist: • The ignition switch is OFF, key out. • Ignition OFF, transmitter is out of range • No activity exists on the serial data line. • No outputs are commanded. • No delay timers are actively counting. • No wake-up inputs are present. If all these conditions are met, the BCM will enter a low power or sleep condition. -
Solar Battery Maintainer
redwngr replied to SilveradoRST's topic in 2019-2026 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
How long are you planning to have it parked? Detail description of that one makes it seem like only a trickle charger and not a 'battery maintainer'. -

Isn't that for shutting off accessories and lights xyz minutes after engine shut-off? Even in shipping mode they probably draw a small amount of current. -
It will be the same as the rest of the 2020 HD's

2020 Silverado Idle RPM adjustment question
redwngr replied to PSUFAN's topic in 2019-2026 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
If it doesn't idle correctly they dealer should be diagnosing and correcting the cause. (and I don't mean covering it up by changing the idle from gm spec) Clearly they don't all idle roughly as described. -
Have you tried running AA or CP and google maps or Waze for navigation? Maybe you don't need the audio system with built-in nav?

So it seems there is conflicting info in the 21 sierra manual. 2021 Sierra manual has a several pages of instructions for programming keys but for FOB it says: Programming Transmitters to the Vehicle Only RKE transmitters programmed to this vehicle will work. If a transmitter is lost or stolen, a replacement can be purchased and programmed through your dealer. Each vehicle can have up to eight transmitters programmed to it. See your dealer for transmitter programming. BUT... A few pages later in the manual they give instructions for programming additional ones if 'two recognized transmitters' are available, and another set of instructions for if 'two recognized transmitters' are not available.

iirc, the manual has instructions for key programming, but says a dealer has to do the fob programming.

3.23s with 10 speed and 20” wheels, too tall?
redwngr replied to Tybolt101's topic in 2019-2026 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
Fwiw, the 'diesel off-road package' (which is the only way to order LM2/10spd and 3.73's) is only available on some LT and RST versions, and is not available with max tow package. So far, the package is only offered on the chev. -
Tires rotation and tpms issues
redwngr replied to Newduramaxh*ar's topic in 6.6L Duramax Diesel (L5P)
The locations need to be re-taught. You can buy a re-learn tool or visit you friendly dealer. It is no longer possible to teach the locations by adjusting tire pressures the way it was done in the past. (even though the trailer tire sensors can still be done that way). Dealer near me keeps one of the teach tools in service reception and will do the 20 second walk around anytime, no charge, without an appointment.- 1 reply
