2018 SLT Intermittent remote start issue
RPOD71 replied to RPOD71's topic in 2014-2018 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
I'm crossing my fingers.. took my truck in for a ticking/tinging sound in the drivetrain and brought up the 'ole intermittent starting issue (again). This time I had it on video failing. Not sure if it helped, but the mechanic wanted to see the video. So long story short, it stayed there overnight and when I picked it up the next day, the diagnosis was a bad (out of spec negative battery cable under load) It was dropping over 280mv and should be less than 200. Also said my "driving habits" were not helping the battery charge because I only drive about 30 min to work. Battery was slightly undercharged, which they also corrected. I'm hopeful the negative cable was the culprit. Real head scratcher about my commute not enough to charge the battery though. It's 3/4 highway speeds. Side note, the ticking sound was the driveshaft -
My ‘18 Sierra has been doing this for so long, I got used to it. Glad to see a fix for it. I did the washer trick, drivers side only.

2018 SLT Intermittent remote start issue

Thanks, this will give me a good start. I found an 1100 page pdf on GM Upfitter that I browsed briefly. Seems to have everything electrical. Should be a good read when I start nights later this week. I have unlimited paper at my disposal, but I probably need a few toner cartridges to print it all out at work lol. -
2018 SLT Intermittent remote start issue
RPOD71 replied to RPOD71's topic in 2014-2018 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
Back again, next winter season, same issue. Completely random no starts via fob. I don’t have app access unless they offer a free trial. I haven’t taken it to the dealer yet, but I will soon. I only use the remote start in winter and everything was going well, until it didn’t start before leaving for work (11/22/19). Since then, I started an excel spreadsheet with date, time, temperature, method (fob 1x/2x or key), failed ( Yes or No), and info columns. The 1x/2x for the fob is my way of keeping track if I only used I once or hit it again to get another 10 min of warming up. All entries are 1x. Thinking about it now, I should have kept track if it was running or not when I put the key in and left. I kept track of every start, even with the key. I was hoping to see a pattern or something that I can take to the dealer to help pinpoint the issue. On 12/19, it started fine with the fob. Made a stop at a gas station 15 min later and used the key (log entry 37) to start it. When it was cranking, it just stopped like I let go of the key. This isn’t the first time this has happened either. I noticed it a handful of times since I owned the truck, random times, random seasons. The next failure came at log entry 100 (weird lol) and it was via the fob. Same story, lights flash once. Since entry 100, I’ve only been keeping track of remote starts. Today, entry 120, 10 degrees, failed with fob, lights flash once. I was pissed off all the way home lol. I have zero faith with my dealer and when I take it in next, I will go to a different one, hoping a different set of eyes may solve the issue. I know there are wiring diagrams out there, but does anyone have a ladder diagram of the remote system? I’ll trouble shoot it myself (not the dealers way of trying it a few times and say “looks good to me”). A ladder diagram would be beneficial so I can see what permissives need to be met in order for the fob to work. Plus what volts or ohms the items require to tell the truck to start via the fob because all conditions are met. I know hood, doors, low oil, low fuel are some, (all?) until then, I’ll continue with my log. Since this has started to be an issue and the sometimes random key start hiccups, I’m leaning towards a bad ground. Somewhere. -
Discovered! Features you may not have known about...

My settings to enable or disable those features are in the infotainment system. The mirrors are in comfort and convince (I think) and I forget where the window is located, but they are both in there if equipped on your vehicle. -

They claimed the load tested the battery and checked all components related to the remote start. I don't believe they did. The invoice just stated they hooked up the tech2 and tried to recreate the problem, found no codes, etc. I would think it would have the other stuff listed to keep from chasing their tails for the next time I brought it in. I'll check the battery myself, but if it happens again, I'm going to a different dealer. They claim my OnStar error codes are "probably" from a bad signal from the satellite. They can't even give me an exact reason for the codes. -

So I took it in and again.. nothing. I left it overnight so it sits for 12+ hours, in the cold, like it does for me at home or at work. They said they can't fix something they can't replicate, started numerous times for them. No codes, no history (because no CEL). Frustrating. Going to pick it up and ask to see what was done other than starting it remotely. Would like to see my battery listed as something checked as well as whatever switches would keep it from starting. -

I've read that elsewhere on here that it will store the info without cel. How do you tell the service advisors that you know it does when they and the mechanic tell you otherwise, and they are the "experts"? -

No CEL, no code. The dealer plugged into OBD upon arrival and me explaining the problem. Said no code for anything. When I scheduled the appt, I asked if a failure to start remotely would leave a code, they said only if the CEL is on. -
Yes it is.

It's the same. It's been a while (I don't even have the truck anymore) but I remember not putting the check mark in the box that makes sure it's compatible with my 1500 because the part number was for a 2500.

Back in July, I traded in my 14 Silverado for an 18 SLT premium plus. Been more than happy with the upgrade. Since it's cold, I've been using the remote start when needed. Noticed the issue a while back when I tried using the fob walking to my truck after work. Lights flashed and nothing. I dismissed it at that time. Worked via fob or app for a while and then it didn't again. So I took it to the dealer. They couldn't replicate it but did do an update that addressed the crank position sensor. A week or so of starts remotely worked, then it didn't again. Most recent failure was this morning. If it fails via the app it gives error 220_99. If I try again with the app it is 220_12. The 220_12 (I think) is the same you get if you remote started twice and tried a 3rd time without using the key. One recent failure via the fob (after the dealer), I was in my garage and I heard it. It sounded like you just bumped the ignition. This will be new info when I go back to the dealer, but I'm wondering if someone else had this issue?

Look under the truck by the spare tire. You'll see the wiring. One has a dummy plug cover. At least my 14 did. That's where the harness plugs in. Then use the provisions in the truck and snap the holders into it. It's pretty easy, but I do remember using string to fish the ends that come up the side if the bed.

VIN Decoder & RPO Codes

Been trying various techniques to get my build sheet. First tried the PM to the GM rep here. Sent email exactly like Zoomie did last night at work. Got my 4 page PDF early this morning. -

Wash, clay bar, wax and glow-tie install. Didn't put the black emblem on back yet, can't find my fishing line. Headlights and fogs are next project. -
10/18 diode jump gets them on with high beams. 10/22 gets them on with parking lights

I plan on tapping into the cargo light circuit and adding a NC plunger type switch so when you open the tailgate, the lights come on. Similar to a door switch. Just need to not be lazy and get it done.

I got the OEM harness from GM parts outlet (#22878806) about $30, LED strip lights from amazon and some automotive 3M tape. Saved quite a bit over what GM wants with better lighting. Harness is plug and play, there is a spot by your spare that it plugs into and is controlled by the switch in the cab. Just cut the plugs off the light end and splice your LEDs into them. The LEDs I bought have adhesive but it's not that good. I ran the 3M tape where I put the lights, along the top of the rails. I'll try to take a pic tonight at work if I can.

it happened on my 14, more times than I can remember. 3 days after driving it home. Each time it blacked out, I still had a working radio.. As in even though it was black, I could guess where buttons were and change stations. Only thing that didn't work was the volume nob. The steering wheel controls worked fine. Every time I took it in, they said it's called 'logic lock' and their fix was to see if there was an update and or disconnect the battery. I don't like the morons there and if I kept band-aid-ing a broken item at my job, I'd get fired. So when it happened again, I took it there while it was black. Left it running so they could see it not working. I wasn't taking another update fix anymore. I was adamant about what they've done prior wasn't working. They had my truck for a week replaced the hmi screen and a cable. Was good for a month and it happened again. Took it back, they had it for another week and replaced other stuff and calibrated the door switch? Whatever they did seemed to do the trick. Haven't had the problem in months. Knock on wood. I'll dig up my paper work to see what they replaced if it helps.

2014+ Truck Bed / Tonneau Covers
RPOD71 replied to Green 1364's topic in Modifications & Accessories
Nice 50 degree day, so I took advantage. Washed the truck and put on the tonneau. Wish it was a bit warmer, would have been able to stretch it more to remove the wrinkles. Clamps were different, no bolts. Took about 30 minutes, one adjustment. So far so good with GMs version. Uploaded the images here. Ran out of daylight, images not the best. Will take better ones later if needed. http://imgur.com/a/NTqhy -

I went with the GM Accessory (soft roll-up w/embossed bowtie - #22772362 - $575). It's going to sit in the box until it gets a little warmer here. <30 degrees and I hate working on stuff when it's cold out. Will post pics when it's done. They did me a solid by only charging me tax on the difference from my voucher and the price of the cover. So only $80ish out of pocket vs $120 -

Yea, that's my problem. They don't know anymore than we because they look at the same page as us. I find that assinine because of the multiple versions they offer. The person I contacted at truxedo said they make the truxport for GM. I'm guessing that's the $330 soft roll up version GM has, not the $575 version I initially thought. I have no clue what the other two are. Nor does anyone there. I was thinking about buying both then returning the one I don't like lol. Yea, that's my problem. Probably going with the soft trifold. Will sleep on it over the weekend. Dissapointed in the price gouging. If it was The lo pro qt, I'd get that over the trifold.
