Heavy tow on gas motor
2016HD replied to cmysstailights's topic in 2015-2019 Silverado HD, Sierra HD & Medium Duty
What tuner? Or tune do you have. Also wonder what you keep the RPM at during the hills. Needs to be 4000rpm + to do anything with that weight. LOL. Wondering how much better the truck is with a tune. I dont see much gain from CAI on these style truck. Thanks. -
Nice factory option. But kinda pricey considering you could have gone with a much better aftermarket cooler for less $$. On a side note? How do you find the difference with the Tune?? Any power gains and mileage when not towing? Thanks. Nice work though. Any link to the hose kit you found.

The Inevitable Comparison: GM 6.6 vs. Ford 7.3
2016HD replied to C/K Man's topic in 2020-2026 Silverado HD & Sierra HD
I was on your side of Keeping the revs up and just above the torque peaks etc. Read my posts about when towing staying above 4g is better. Maybe i miss posted or miss quoted? -

The Inevitable Comparison: GM 6.6 vs. Ford 7.3

Well you are a bit older than I. However raised on a farm myself. Along with 15 mins from local drag strip. Tons of engine builds along with transmission builds etc. And yes very familiar with Gear Vendors. I think you miss understand what im saying. I dont run 4000rpm on flat ground!! While towing. No need with 400flbs. However when Towing a trailer and fairly loaded box. Up 5-8% Grades, you need to keep the engine at or slightly above its torque peak!! This means second or third gear depending on grade and load. You absolutely should not be pulling steep grade while loaded at 3000rpm. Unless you want to risk losing a rod bearing or main do to fuel knock and Lugging. This can be safely sustained for 20mins or more as this is what the gas engines of modern design are built to withstand. This is why the 6.0l stayed in the HD for so long. Durability testing. The 6.2 420hp engine for example will not last under these same conditions as its built as more of a hot rod engine even though its in the 1/2ton trucks. Not sure why you think i would run above 4000rpm under all conditions? This is about towing and where I live. There is a ton of Mountains and no way around it. SO 4500rpm second gear around 7500lbs trailer and 2500lbs in the bed. Minimum 10 min straight on most trips. Have owned and built 6 small block 355 in half and 3/4 tons. First 2 are still around at over 200000km on the build tons of towing and work hours. Latest truck before my 16 was a 2001 2500hd Lq4 Basic rebuild when purchased along with trans rebuild. Cam/headers/ tune etc. Great towing truck! Sold at 250000km no leaks or repairs after my build. Towed great! Even picked up 3rd gear with the 4l80e doing the same towing up 8% grades, While at 110-120kmh in 3rd at 4500RPM. Each there own we all have our experiences! I hate diesels! and the FAD that they created. Great for working and if i towed 15000lbs daily I might own one. Or id Supercharge an LS. Peace. -

So How many small blocks have you owned?? Reason for them not living past 100000km was do to a lack of proper maintenance And OR the lesser quality of materials used for production along with cylinder wash down from improperly tuned carbs. I've never had an issue getting a 350-400hp small block to live past 100000 other than the old style oil pan and main gasket issues. You state running a gas engine at its torque range!! So what exactly do you think the torque range of a modern Ls Or l8t is?? These engines are designed and built to run in the 4000 Rpm range all day long!! And that is where they work the best. If i own a gas 3/4 its because I dont need Or want a diesel!! And yes my gas engine pulling 7000lbs with a fully loaded box will Pull second gear doing 50mph at 4500-4800 consistently during our summer vacations in the mountains. At an 8% grade it wouldnt hold speed even at 3000 rpm because you are under the torque curve and way below the Horse power range. Diesels became popular because they make more than 500lbs of torque and are slightly more efficient along with Diesel was a lot cheaper at the time. Oh wait and you can ROl Coal!- waste, But we are all allowed our opinions and experiance. -

Id like to know where this came from? And How you think keeping an engine with peak torque at 4000 and peak Hp at 5000rpm will stay cooler running at 3000Rpm? Sorry this is wrong. Run it at 4-5000 rpm all day long. Let the Fan do its job and the engine stay in the peak rpm range for Most power etc. If you run at 3000rpm while towing heavy and long hills you will run hot do to lugging the engine. Risking Higher Knock frequency and ecm will then retard timing etc. Your trans temp will do nothing but continue to climb etc. Drop it into 2ond or third and leave it at 4-4500rpm and let it eat. Its designed to do this and so has every other small block prior to it. You can still lock out the higher gears as stated. TFL just needs to learn to actually drive the truck!! Not sure why anyone towing almost max capacity would just let the ecm do what it wants? The more the trans shifts up and down the more heat it creates and this will in turn cause engine temps to climb. -

Sorry I dont believe that the 10 speed will make that much of a difference? 4.30 vs 3.73 is more the deal maker. However a 3 min change? Something is not quite right there? Sorry but the HD diesels were just compared and the Ford has 140ftbls more than the Dmax and Barely bested the Gm in time. A minute difference i believe. I think Mr truck Or should i say mr Ford needs to stop doing the driving! The 7.3 isnt putting out that much more power. Either traffic or other issues were involved. Just my thoughts. But lets see how the durability is? Almost a copy of an LS engine as well. But Hey thats a compliment from Ford. LOL. Just my thoughts -
Would it not have fit behind the grill without cutting it out?

Interested. Lets see the mounting pics and finished product. Very top opening or second one? Thanks.

Bed rail lighting. Harness plug end?
2016HD replied to 2016HD's topic in Modifications & Accessories
what year and model is your truck? Your description says LTZ z71 6.2. That would be a 1500 truck and could be different than my 16 HD ? I dont remember it being an 8 pin plug. Only 4 or six. A test light will get it figured out in less than 5 mins. Do you not have the correct harness? Or? Sorry its been a while since i looked at it. -

if you look up into the junction block while laying on your back under the truck. cant remember if i had to remove the spare tire? dont think so. There is only 3 pins. One is switched power from the cab. one is ground and the other if i remember correctly was linked to the brake lights for some reason. should be easy to figure out as they were opposite corners etc . -
Who using their 2500hd Gasser?
2016HD replied to jt metal's topic in 2015-2019 Silverado HD, Sierra HD & Medium Duty
If you can fire up your carbed vehicles in the middle of winter or anything under 10deg. and it will idle and drive away cleanly in under a minute. Your idle circuit is way to rich.. And you are using to much fuel under normal operating conditions. To rich at idle. A correctly tuned carb will run perfectly with a good choke setting and correct jetting under all situation. Only reason to not use a choke is not knowing how to set one up. Or a race engine that doesnt require it. Not picking on anyone. But a well tuned carb will run almost as good as Efi. Even in the cold. -
DIC Question

Z71/ Offroad package trucks will have it. Non Z / Offroad trucks i believe do not have it. -
Honestly. My opinion. would be to not bother with shorty headers. Not enough gain, especially in the lower end torque department. Shorty may gain you a small amount of top end hp. But not really anything down low. Long tubes will give you much larger gains across the rpm range.

Towing with a 6.0l !!! If you want to get up the hills and actually use the engines power range. You should be in the 4500-- to 5000 RPM Range while towing heavy up steep hills. This is where the engine lives and will do its best work. Its a small block Chevy. Let it eat. 3000 to 4000 rpm you are right on the limit of fuel knock if you have bad gas and are unaware of it. Just my 2 cs -
Pretty sure if you put 4.30 behind a 6.0l you would have the same grunt as the 6.2. I know the 6.2 is rated higher. But Im also guessing those are a bit inflated numbers. Plus im sure the mpg is worse etc. Just my thoughts. The 6.0 will out last it without a problem.

2016 Silverado 2500HD Steering woes
2016HD replied to QueenGlamis's topic in 2015-2019 Silverado HD, Sierra HD & Medium Duty
I do believe that the 6.0 gas truck did not come with the assisted steering. Only the diesels. Does anyone on here have a gas truck with this problem? Thank.s -

My link voice commands not work for phone
2016HD replied to Bill Wong's topic in Troubleshooting & Recalls
Ive have found with my s7 you have to go into the settings and allow the truck to wake the phone for voice activation to work. The other settings i had to play with was the speed that the phone receives your voice. I talk faster than the stock setting and it wouldnt understand my initial Contact description. My wifes name etc. It seems to be much better now. However it can be a bit spotty sometimes and it helps to wake your phone before you get into the truck. Also the Android app does work good if your connected via the usb. Hope this helps some. Do some google searches about S7 and voice recognition etc.- 35 replies

17 front ends on the HD are the same as 16. Just the hoods were changed for the Diesel trucks. -
I know the 6.0 is good. Just upgraded from an 01 to the 16. But with my setup Going up an 8% grade in the old truck id be basically in 1st gear do the the 4l80E doing about 4500rpm. at 70Kmh. Havnt made that pull yet with the new truck and 6spd. But hoping i can at least pull 80kph to 100kph in 2ond or 3rd.

Something is wrong. That engine and truck combo will out pull and out work the 5.7hemi without an issue. Either you have a brake issue on the truck or trailer or there is a warranty issue with the truck? BAD gas is also possible! Just my 2cs. I pull a 20ft travel trailer 6800lbs dry with 2 bike a boat and geny and gear in the truck without issues up and around our local mnts. 8% grade and 80km. In the summer! Something is wrong. And its safe to run around 5000rpm all day long.
