2017 Silverado Steering Angle Sensor Noise
Bob Miller replied to Bob Miller's topic in Troubleshooting & Recalls
Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? -
Anyone else ever hear this noise when turning the steering wheel? I've narrowed it down to my steering angle sensor. I can get under the dash and move it around and it makes the noise. It also very clearly audible when you're laying on the floor board looking up at it. I've been driving around with it like this for thousands of miles and over a year. I haven't been in the mood to deal with the dealership any thoughts? I may try putting some cardboard pieces between the sensor and the housing like another guy on here did (he has a good video on youtube too). drives me bonkers though in situations where I don't have my radio on and I'm making low speed turns.

Hmmm, I'm going to look a little deeper into that. Maybe try adjusting them up and down or putting some tape around the base or something.

Back seat creaking sounds (with passengers)
Bob Miller replied to Cupton's topic in 2014-2018 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
Thanks for the tip on that one. That does actually happen from time to time too, but this is definitely something different. The other day I took unzipped the seat cover on the back of the front passenger seat and gave the hinges and some of the bolts and tracks a coat of lithium grease. I've driven the truck about 30 miles or so since then and its been quiet. I think the real test will be the next time I go somewhere with my wife sitting in the seat and then drive around again when the seat is empty. see if it starts rattling again. -

Wanted to give you an update (I've watched your videos on Youtube - thanks for posting these because they're a big help). I've messed with the back seats and I think they're pretty quiet now. As far as my noise I hear on the front passenger side of the truck I don't think it had anything to do with the door at all. I think its had everything to do with the passenger seat. I've posted this Youtube video in a different forum here with the noise I've been hearing and I think that *maybe* I've fixed it now. My guess though is that its probably only temporary fix. I unzipped the back of the passenger seat cover and sprayed WD-40 brand lithium grease on the seat hinges and on the tracks and exposed bolts. I've driven the truck probably 30-40 miles since then and its been dead quiet now. I'm afraid though that its going to wear off or get jacked up the next time someone sits in that seat and then gets out again... I'm toying with maybe putting flocking tape or something near the hinges. I also should say the dealership replaced the lower seat frame last year and that didn't do diddly - they also replaced my door latch (thinking it was coming from the door) and that didn't do anything either. -
Back seat creaking sounds (with passengers)
Bob Miller replied to Cupton's topic in 2014-2018 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
So I started a topic the other day about a noise I'm getting from what sounds like the front seat (but heck, it could be from the rear too I can' t figure it out). And it mainly happens when its empty. I've taken some of the front seat apart and sprayed lithium grease everywhere, I just don't know (I've had the dealer replace the seat frame and they also replaced the door latch thinking that could be it).. nothing has worked I took this video the other day, sounds like this (almost like an old time typewriter on bumps): -
And whats crazy too is how expensive batteries are now.
-
That would be great if you could remember it Brad. I will also say the seat is real creaky when I lean on it or push it slightly. The sound is like a creaky old mattress or something. So today I spent a little More time looking at the passenger seat. I took the trim pieces off the bottom rails and then started to remove the cover off the back to try and get a better look at the inside of the back of the seat. I sprayed some lithium grease on the rails and exposed bolts That hold the seat down and then also sprayed some on the hinges inside the seat. After all that , the seat does still creak a bit when i move it around. So I’m not really sure what is doing that. I drove around a bit after all that and it seemed quieter but its so hard to tell because sometimes its quiet anyways..
-
Whats odd is it won’t do it all the time. I can drive it sometimes on the same bumpy road and it makes no noise at all. Then out of the blue it will start ticking and rattling like a typewriter on bumps. It’s sooooo irritating when it happens.

Had to replace mine yesterday actually. Got the same exact battery you did from Autozone. I could tell it was going because the truck was cranking slower and slower the last few weeks. Finally died yesterday. 2017 5.3L with only 23k miles. I think the Houston heat helped doing it in.

Here’s a longer version of the video (about a minute or so)

Guys, please help. Every time I think I have this figured out I actually don’t. The dealer has replaced the door latch (that wasn’t it), they’ve replaced the passenger seat lower frame and I’ve lubricated the hinges on the rear fold up seats and the hooks in the back of the cab. I’m still pretty certain though this noise is coming from the front passenger seat. I can push on the seat when the truck is not in motion and it makes a creaky grinding sound. I made a video clip of the noise I hear as I’m driving down any street that has imperfections in the pavement. It’s driving my batsh*t insane crazy.

Hmmm....I'm wondering if this is what I"m hearing in my truck that all this time I think is coming from the passenger door. I'll go weeks w/out hearing anything and then hit a few bumps and the inside of my truck sounds like an old fashioned typewriter going down the road.. I have the under seat storage bin too.

Clicking when turning steering wheel, Easy FREE fix

Cool. That’s good to know and thanks for the reply on this. I’ve mentioned it before on these forums, but it feels like I’ve had way more ticks and rattles and noises in the interior of this truck than I’ve ever had in any other GM product I’ve ever owned. The one that’s been the most annoying is my passenger door rattle. It’ll be quiet for days and then I’ll hit a random bump and it’ll set it off like an old typewriter. I’ve played around with the door striker and have wiped down the seals, etc..and it seems to always come back. I recently put polyethylene clear tape on the striker and around the frame of the door (not on the door but on the body of the truck, just lined it up to where the rubber seal makes contact when the door is closed) and that seems to have maybe worked. We’ll see. -

The exact same thing is happening to me now. I’ve heard it for months but just haven’t gotten around to doing anything about it. I can actually just move or wiggle the sensor around a couple of millimeters back and forth on the shaft and it makes the noise. The only thing I’m worried about is that if it gets stabilized like that so that it doesn’t move, will that cause something else to break later down the road? (I have no idea but just a thought I’m having). I’m guessing you havent had any issues regarding steering since you’ve done this? -
Hey guys thanks for all the good posts on this topic. Overall for me the truck feels solid and definitely drives nice. The only “but” I have is all of the little ticks and rattles I’ve heard since the truck was only a few months old. The most annoying had to be my “B Pillar “ rattle, which I believe I’ve completely solved by adjusting my right rear door striker (of all things). The other being my passenger side door rattle which I think, (knocking on wood) I may have solved by strategically placing clear polyethylene coated tape around the door frame and on the striker. All things I probably shouldn’t have to do myself. It’s definitely the first GM vehicle I’ve ever owned that has these types of rattles and noises. But those are more like nuisances I suppose. It’s definitely a nice cruiser though. And the exhaust note is just perfect IMO (its just the stock system - although I do have the Chevy chrome tip on it which I think looks cool). We’ll see, I’m gonna try and hang on to it and get some miles out of it.

I feel like all I see online regarding the 14-18 Silverados and Sierras is basically negative. Stories of many of guys having major transmission issues and/or failures before 100K miles, clunking drivelines and steering ...etc... I’ve had some rattles that I’ve more or less figured out now, but I haven’t had anything catastrophic yet. - knock on wood. And of course I shouldn’t considering I only have around 23k miles on my truck. (2017 5.3L with 6 speed, RWD crew cab) I really do wonder though, what are my chances of getting slammed with some big expense when the thing only has 70k miles on it in a couple or three years from now? Anyone out there getting up there in mileage 14-18 with no issues? Maybe I’m just looking for a good confidence boost right now incidentally, my 2001 and 2004 Sierras I used to own were trouble free, put a good amount of miles on both.

Did you ever get a chance to take your truck into the dealer for the B Pillar tick? I haven't tried messing with the pillar spot welds yet but it seems that putting that black gorilla tape around the rear driver side door striker seems to make it stop. I did that in November and it finally wore out from opening and closing the door I guess. I heard the ticking coming back this morning so I re-taped the door striker again and the ticking went away. So my guess is that if it isn't the B Pillar spot welds, then it has something to do with the rear door being out of adjustment. This doesn't surprise me, because my passenger door is out of adjustment and it ticks and rattles too - I've sprayed that door's latch and striker and it makes it go away temporarily - again I just need to find time (and patience) to get in there and adjust the bolts for the door on the hinges.
-
***B Pillar tick update** I haven't done the procedure that wingsaa suggested yet (its cooled down here in Houston and the noise has basically gone away and I really haven't had a chance to take everything apart again). However, this morning I noticed the tick was coming back on bumps (71 degrees this morning here). So for giggles, because I still have the roll of Gorilla tape in my truck from when I taped up the passenger door striker for that rattle, I decided to pull into a quiet neighborhood on my drive to work and tape up the door striker on the REAR driver side door. Started driving off and the tick was immediately gone. My hunch is it has something to do with the perhaps the door being held firmer in place against the cab and maybe "pressing" harder against that weld (?) Not really sure. To me though its not really a solution. I may just adjust that striker when I get around to actually adjusting the passenger door striker too.
-
When you adjusted your door striker on the passenger side did you move it up or down ? (or sideways even?). This whole time I thought my passenger seat was rattling its turning out that it actually isn't the seat at all. I had one dealer replace the door lock and it did nothing, and then another dealer replace the passenger seat frame, did nothing. I decided to put gorilla tape on the door striker and it stopped the ticking and rattling - but its finicky. My wife rode in the passenger seat the other day and the next time I drove the truck without anyone in it, it was rattling again. So I took the tape off and put a little bit less back on (and also took a mallet and slightly tapped up and down on the striker) , and now its quiet again. I'd rather just adjust it though and not worry about it rattling again. The B pillar tick on the driver side remains though. Lately it seems to be even more sporadic. Usually when its lower than 75 or so outside it doesn't' do it, but it was in the 60s and rainy this morning and it was doing it. I should also note that I taped the driver side striker and tapped up and down on it too hoping maybe that was the cause of my driver side problem as well - but I truly think that the driver side is definitely the bad weld.

Hey thanks for posting this. I had my B pillar trim off the last couple of weeks trying to figure this out. I even bought some Noico "dynamat" type material off Amazon and put it on various points inside the pillar around the seat belt adjuster this last weekend and it basically did nothing. I'm going to study this document and see if perhaps I can do this myself. I'd do anything to stop this noise at this point. Incidentally I had to throw the trim panels back on the pillar yesterday morning because I was going to be transporting some coworkers around yesterday and I didn't want to have to explain why all my trim was missing on the pillar LOL. In my hasty attempt to put it all back together before work (sweating profusely thanks to an especially humid Houston morning) I ended up somehow messing up the tabs that connect the lower black trim piece to the upper gray piece that surrounds the seat belt slider. its looks terrible. When I take this apart again I'm also going to try and figure out how I can align those two trim pieces together. I don't understand how those two tabs don't "catch" anymore to keep the pieces firmly together...

Let us know what they say. My dealer tends to be kind of mediocre when it comes to fixing things. I had to take it to another dealer to finally get my rattling passenger seat frame ordered (the part hasn't come in yet, but when it does and they fix the seat its going to be like Christmas morning for me to not have my passenger seat rattle anymore). I actually took off my B pillar trim this weekend and spent some time trying to figure it out - which of course I can't. Today during lunch I drove over to a stereo shop near my office to see what they'd charge to put Dynamat type product in the pillar and it sounds like it'll run a couple hundred bucks or so. I may just buy the material and do it myself since I have the pillar off. A kit of that mat product is about $125 for 12 square feet. I may just break down and buy it and then use the left over stuff in other areas of the truck. My thought was putting it on the metal that is exposed facing the inside of the cab. Perhaps taking the seat belt height adjustment mechanism off and then putting the dynamat behind it, cutting out the bolt holes, and then bolting the seat belt mechanism back in over it. Then perhaps putting some more on other exposed surfaces within the pillar too, both inner and outer skin. It seems like that stuff was designed to reduce or eliminate vibrating metal , so this may be the only solution. (of course assuming that is the piece of the pillar that's actually vibrating...)

How's your B pillar rattle been lately? Mine was ticking and clicking like crazy this morning (still in the high 70s here in the mornings) - since its a Saturday I"m thinking about taking it apart and having a look inside there again...
-
Have an appointment to take mine in for the seat tomorrow. Driving me insane I may mention the b pillar and see if they can spray foam in the pass through connector - although I don't have any faith they can fix any of it. Toying with actually taking the truck to a stereo shop or something and seeing if they can take that pillar trim panel off and professionally put Dynamat and foam in there to stop it. I'm sure getting the dealership to do it would be nearly impossible.
