No crank, no fuel pump, no start
DanTheBetterMan posted a topic in 1999-2013 Silverado & Sierra 1500
Hey guys, I have a problem I can't solve and I'm hoping someone here can help. Last night I was driving my 2011 GMC Sierra 2WD 5.3L and pulled into a gas station. When I got back in the truck I turned the key to the start position but nothing happened besides the dash going black. I didn't hear the starter click and I didn't hear the fuel pump turn on. So far here's what I've done: Tried to jump the car, no success. Took the battery to get tested and it's fine. Switched the relays around to see if something else would quit working and the truck would start, but same outcome. I jumped the two big connectors on the back of the starter and the starter turned over, but the truck never started it actually kept turning even with the power off and didn't stop until I disconnected the battery I replaced the battery in the remote but this didn't fix anything. I thought it might be anti-theft related but the the light on the dash isn't on for the alarm and the truck locks and unlocks with the remote. I connected a scanner to it and am able to see the ecm getting an ignition signal when I turn the key to start Through the scanner I can see that the ECM recognizes that the transmission is in park/neutral Has anyone ran into this before? Is there anything else that would prevent it from starting and cause a no crank, no fuel, no start issue that I need to check? The monitor I'm using has the ability to check basically any sensor value. Thanks!- 10 replies

I recently purchased a 2005 Silverado 1500 and it came with two keys (both well used) that appear to be perfectly identical. However, one of them always turns the ignition with no issues and one of them turns the ignition only after wiggling it for several seconds. There must be some imperceptible difference between the keys but I'm trying to decide if it's more likely a bad key or an ignition tumbler that's at the end of its life. I know they're both pretty cheap fixes but I was wondering if anyone has any insight

2001 gmc HD 6.6 Have had no issues prior to this, I have 173 000 on this truck. 92 degree day. Drove to dump today, turned off, emptied trash, finished and started it back up then drove to the gas station. Turned it off for about 15 minutes, came back out of store, turned it on, started back up then immediately died. Tried to turn it on again and it did not turn over. My dash came on, my gauges worked and it shifted into neutral no issue. Just wouldnt turn over, wouldnt even click. My only light that did not come on on the dash was my WAIT TO START icon for the glow bulbs. Had to have it towed home. Let it sit about 40 min, my husband went out to try it but used the spare key and started up no issue. Twice. No delay in turn over. I went and tried with both 3x each and it started up also, but took longer to actually start. Last oil and fuel filter change less than 1000 miles ago. Batteries 6.months old. I havent started looking at relays or fuses. What would be the difference between symptoms and trouble shooting a bad ignition switch versus a bad starter? Any help appreciated.

I have a 2014 sierra crew cab. Since it was new I have been having a problem with the steering wheel locking and being unable to turn the key to start/unlock the wheel. The dealer has replaced the whole steering column with no fix. Has anyone had the same problem and what is the fix.

I just bought a 1991 Chevy C70 Kodiak C7H042 6.6L 403 CUI Diesel in amazingly great condition. I am now the 3rd owner of this dump truck. The first owner took great care of the vehicle, everything thing appears to be well maintained and no shade tree work. All the parts, wiring and accessories appear to be original and well maintained. However, the second owner bought this truck and never used it. It has sat in a field for about four years. To get to the point, I completely serviced the truck and replaced the batteries, checked the fuses, grounds, relays and I have absolutely no power to the truck. No interior or exterior lights and no lights on the instrument panel. What could be the issue?

So this is my first post on here, been lurking around for a while and have been able to troubleshoot the majority of my problems. But most recently while leaving work truck started up just fine (2001 Silverado 4.3l vortec with 281k miles) and immediately stalled going in reverse tried cranking it and the battery died so I replaced it with a brand new one and it started up just fine and about 5 minutes down the road stalled again and would not start, towed it home and checked for basics fuel and spark, the truck is infact getting fuel even replaced the old fuel filter, the ignition coil has power and is sending power to distributor cap, checked spark plug wires and they aren’t reciving power and grounded a spark plug to check if it wasn’t getting any spark and it has not, replaced both rotor and cap and there is still no spark, all fuses are good, just no power to cap any help is appreciated

2010 Chevy Silverado So I’ve just bought this truck, and when I try to start it the starter will sometimes stay on after the Motor fires for a few seconds. Then it has a very uneven idle. THEN when I rev the engine it wil rev up then drop down below normal idel and almost stall. This will go away if the truck is warm. Now the only thing I have done since getting it is to pull the pipe off of the purge valve next to the fuel tank because it is broken. I’ve ordered a new purge valve and will install it as soon as it gets in. Is it possible that this is causing some sort of low fuel pressure or something? Has anyone else has issues like this?

Hi, need help please. Hit black ice in my 03 Sierra 2500 with a duramax engine. Went over a 15 foot embankment and came down hard under front driver side corner which pushed everything up several inches. The motor was running when I shut it down but now will not start. I was thinking maybe an emergency fuel shut off was triggered but now i'm thinking maybe something else. Any ideas or help would be truly appreciated. PS: jumping them isn't as fun as it looks on tv!

Hows it going, any help and advice is VERY much appreciated. 2000 Silverado 4.8 vortec 1500 4wd. I have been trying to figure this truck out for months, shakes at all rpms although certain rpms are worse than others(the missfire) I have replaced intake manifold gaskets, double and triple checked vaccum system for leaks doing smoke tests (no vaccum leaks), replaced pcv valve, thoroughly cleaned injectors, confirmed everything fuel wise is working properly, new fuel filter. Still shaking badly. The other day I had a great idea, I waited until it got dark outside and decided to run the engine and look under the hood. Sure enough, I noticed sparking (shorting out) happening on pretty much all of the coils. The sparking is COMPLETELY random and there is never a consistent spark, for example one moment coils for cyl# 2,5,1,7 will be sparking, the next moment they wont and others will, and sometimes they look like they arent sparking at all, Also may mention that the drivers side of the motor seems to be sparking more often but it does indeed happen on both sides. It seems to spark a little more frequently when you spike the throttle. All i have replaced in the ignition system is the spark plugs, and made no difference at all. All of the coils are producing a spark at the spark plug. I have checked the common grounds to each ignition coil (plug on the top of the coil) and they all were grounded. Truck has 240k miles. If someone could please help me I would really appreciate it I feel like im SO close to fixing this thing and is my only car right now and need to figure it out. Thanks

Hi Guys, I'm about to replace my spark plugs and wires. Keeping it OEM of course. I really don't wanna screw up the ordering as no auto store in my country has the wires. I already got the plugs but will order the wires and 758EE is what I've read is the correct wires. How do I know what coils I have? 2015 Silverado HC, 5.3 (non flex)

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 7-21-2017 General Motors has won yet again in court. In the latest of six bellwether cases selected to help determine how a class action lawsuit will proceed, GM again wins. The Detroit News reports that a jury in New York has found that GM was not liable for injuries to a driver who claimed the crash and resulting injuries he suffered were related to the ignition switch defect. One trend that GM-Trucks.com sees is that the facts in each of these cases are never quite what the stereotype is made out to be by the mass-media. For example, in this case, the vehicle in which the accident occurred continued to be used by the driver after the accident. GM has yet to loose a bellwether case. Winning these and settling at a reasonable cost (already over $ billion for GM) is critical. The U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled that GM may be liable for the ignition switch cases and that its bankruptcy does not shield it from liability. That could mean up to $10 billion in pending liability according to experts. 2001 Silverado, 150k miles, Auto long bed single cab. Picked up a project 01 with an ignition problem. Here is a description of the issue I'm trying to fix: There is a push button start that has been rigged into it. The only way it will start is to turn the key to START while pushing the start button. If I try to turn the key without pushing the button nothing happens. Also, just about any key will fit and turn the cylinder. The SECURITY light stays on. Is this in pass lock? Pulled the steering column cover to mess with the top wiring harness with the three wire connector and nothing. But I DID see these two little boogers hanging there. I can't find what these wires are in my haynes manual but they obviously go somewhere. Maybe related. Any thoughts on where I should begin to try and get this sorted out?

I have a 1987 R10(Injected) half ton pickup that I have been restoring. I took it to a paint shop to get the exterior and interior painted. I had them remove the old dashed and install a new one in its place. When I went to pick the truck up they said they couldn't get it to start and they thought it was out of gas. It wasn't out of gas. when cranking the engine we couldn't get it to even fire. we took the air cleaner off and could see that fuel was going into the throttle body. There was fuel being sprayed into the throttle body. we took a spark plug wire off and grounded it to ground it and confirmed there was in fact spark. I trailered it there so we just pushed it up onto the trailer to bring it home. Someone mentioned they may have disconnected something with the ignition system. any ideas?

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 4-26-2017 Back in July of 2016, GM-Trucks.com reported to our membership that an appeals court ruling against GM could cost the company billions. That ruling has now been upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court, which refused to take the case, thus codifying the lower court ruling. There is no place left for GM to turn to try to legally shield itself against liability in the ignition switch defect debacle. The ruling means that GM is not shielded from liability because it went bankrupt and then reformed. GM had hoped that its "old GM" liabilities would be wiped clean when it reformed as "new GM" and in many ways, it succeeded. However, with regard to the ignition switch defect legal liability, all avenues of the legal attack led the company to the Supremes and they ruled against GM, just as the lower courts had. The ruling means that not only is GM liable for the deaths and injuries, but also for the loss of value GM vehicle owners suffered due to the issue. Our readers may recall that when Toyota settled its massive liability case for unintended acceleration it was not the deaths and injuries that cost the company big bucks, but rather the cumulative loss of value the vast number of vehicles ownered suffered that hit the company in the piggy bank. The Detroit News reports that the financial hit GM is now exposed to is about $10 Billion. Robert C. Hilliard, a lawyer who is handling 243 claims against G.M, told the New York Times, “There are a lot of cases out there that either are going to have to be settled by G.M. or litigated, now that the Supreme Court is not getting involved." GM's legal spokesperson, Jim Cain, had a totally different view of the matter, saying, "The Supreme Court’s decision was not a decision on the merits, and it’s likely that the issues we raised will have to be addressed in the future in other venues because the Second Circuit’s decision departed substantially from well-settled bankruptcy law." Perhaps Mr. Cain is correct, but if there are "venues" other than federal court and the supreme court in which to plead one's losing case, we have not heard of it. Read our prior story here for more details.

I am working on a 2002 Chevy 2500 HD. The ignition key is sticking when you turn it, and will remain in the cranking position sometimes. I swapped out the ignition cylinder and key, everything is all good there. I also know that the cylinder and key is not the issue, because when the cylinder is removed, if you take a large flat head screwdriver and turn the "recepticle" (female end) of the ignition cylinder, it still sticks. I tried lowering the igntion switch and even without the switch in place, it still sticks. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

John Goreham Contributing Writer, GM-Trucks.com 1-18-2017 General Motors announced today that it has resolved a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) investigation related to the on-going ignition switch defect debacle. The GM relaese is as follows: "General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) announced today that it has resolved a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission investigation arising from the company’s 2014 ignition switch recalls by consenting to an administrative SEC Cease and Desist Order, without admitting or denying any wrongdoing. The SEC settlement does not call into question any of GM’s current or prior financial statements or its disclosures. Also, no material weakness or significant deficiency was found by the SEC. Since the ignition switch recall, GM has been proactively and successfully resolving ignition switch issues with customers and regulators at both the state and federal level. GM will pay a civil penalty of $1 million as part of the settlement. In the months immediately following the ignition switch recall, GM reorganized its vehicle engineering teams for greater transparency, urgency and accountability. This included creating a new global vehicle safety organization that is focused on executing zero-defect safety systems for vehicles and customers. The safety organization includes an industry-leading emerging issues and data analysis team and a re-engineered field investigation process. The company also created a “Speak Up For Safety” program that provides all employees and suppliers an opportunity to report or suggest any potential safety related items." Hello All, I have an ongoing issue I was hoping to get a few opinions on. A few weeks ago my truck started to gradually spudder when I was cruising with the RPMs jumping very slightly when it did. I did not notice it being related to transmission as it was shifting just fine so I figured ignition/timing. The check engine light came on with the error codes p0016 and p0300, camshaft/crankshaft misalignment and multiple misfires, respectively. I needed some brake work done anyway so I took it in to get serviced and they replaced the distributor rotor, cap, wires, sensor and all the coil packs. It worked fine for about a day and then the light came on. I've been working nights on a turnaround the last 2 months and just do not have time to take it in so I waited. About three days after the truck finally just died on the way home. It flashed low oil pressure/low oil level and the pressure dropped to zero as it was dying. I checked all the fluids and for leaks, everything was fine and where it should be. I had it towed to firestone (only thing that was open on the weekend). They quoted me $1300 for a new ECM and new distributor install. My truck is only work $2500-3000 and I'm coming up on paying that for repairs after the last round and this one. They said my ECM was sending commands but not receiving any and the distributor was not sending anything to the ECM. So my questions, the ECM I can see as being a potential for replacement, but the distributor seems like it would have more tell-tale signs if the gear drive was cracked or worn. They also did not mention anything about the ICM or the timing chain, which to me seem like the most likely culprits here. I really do not want to fork over $1300 only to find out my timing chain is stretched or the gears worn and have to fork over another grand. I'm going in tomorrow to inquire, but any help here would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

I am having an issue starting my 1991 GMC K2500. Sometimes it fires right up. Other time absolutely nothing happens when i turn the key. If i turn it off and on enough times eventually something will connect and it will start. Other times i have to jump it, and even then sometimes nothing at all when i turn the key. It has a brand new crate 350, and runs great when it starts, but i cant rely on it enough to start to take it anywhere far from home. Any suggestions on what it might be? I have replaced the steering column and had the issue with both the old and new column. Thanks in advance- Ken

My Denali has been at shop on and off for 3 months. Intermittent problem where vehicle is shut off and key is removed but still runs. Local Firestone dealer replace ignition control module, ignition switch, key, cylinder but still does it. It was happening when damp outside but does it randomly now. Going to take to dealer this week. The Firestone dealer, local dealership that was consulted is stumped, and many professional groups say it's impossible based on the diagnostic steps that the vehicle should be still running. Only 100k miles on this truck. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Below is a copy and paste of the news article. One month after agreeing to pay $900 million to settle criminal charges arising from an ignition switch defect, General Motors said today it will recall about 3,300 large pickup trucks and SUVs for a similar problem. This time the automaker says the problem in light-duty versions of its 2014 Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras, a few heavy-duty version and 2015 Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe SUVs, was discovered through a new GM "Speak Up For Safety" program, before any reports of accidents or injuries. "A company employee driving his own vehicle told other engineers about it and they submitted the 'Speak Up for Safety' form," said GM spokesman Alan Adler. The program was created last year in response to the recall of about 2.5 million small cars equipped with ignition switches that could be jostled by a driver's leg from the "on" to the "accessory" position, cutting electrical power to steering, air bags and other functions. The defect, which some engineers knew about in 2003, was linked to 124 deaths. Employees encouraged to speak up to superiors. There is a process that handles each report and determines the severity of the problem. The trucks have ignition lock gears with an outer diameter that is larger than specifications, making them difficult to turn. The keys can get stuck in the “start” position at high interior temperatures, and if driven that way, they could slip into “accessory” if jostled or the cabin temperature cools, GM said in a statement. While the truck problem is similar to the Cobalt, Adler says the cause is different. The Cobalt switches didn’t have enough resistance to keep from slipping out of the run position. Dealers will replace the ignition lock housing.

The pain just seems to never stop. Some Tahoes are also included. We won't harp on the relationship to the just-settled ignition death lawsuits and civil suits. A GM employee is being credited with discovering the new ignition switch defect according to the Detroit Free Press. As always, you can use our link here to look up your truck to see if it falls under this new ignition switch defect.

However, today the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Justice officials may charge GM and its officers with felony wire fraud. In the eyes of the Department of Justice, GM lied to the public about the faulty ignition switches. Last year Toyota settled similar charges with the Justice Department over its misleading statements about unintended acceleration crashes. That settlement dwarfs all other automotive related fines. At that time, it was clear to those who report news on Toyota and GM that General Motors' liability and possible criminal wrongdoing appeared much more threatening to the company. The GM issue lasted longer, involved more vehicles, and is reported to have caused significantly more deaths and injuries. The probe is being conducted by the Manhattan DA. In a statement, GM said, “We are cooperating fully with all requests from the [Justice Department], as we have from the beginning." GM-trucks.com will bring you more as this story develops. We would be interested to hear your thoughts on the issue. Will GM be charged? Should their 2009 restructuring absolve them of responsibility if they did the same things Toyota did? I have been having trouble with my truck, 5.7L, running properly at low speeds. When I go to start the vehicle sometimes it will take 2-3 cranks before it will start but not always. When I accelerate from a stop it will shudder on take off but then level off. I notice it the most while I am accelerating and turning a corner but that may just be coincidence. Also while I'm driving at a low speed in town I can feel it fluctuating in speed slightly but on the highway it seems to be fine. The only major repair I had done to the truck was I replaced the intake gasket. The only thing that was different after that was every once in a while when I started it I would get a grinding on the starter as if the starter didn't release after the engine started. I figured this was a result of the timing being slightly out of spec. I recently had in to the Chevy dealership, the first time it was reading a misfire so they cleaned the spark plugs and said to try that, $50. The next time was a day later because it started doing the same things it was when I brought it in no more then 2 miles after I left the dealership. This time they re-timed it and put a new distributor cap and rotor on, $300. It ran great for a few days then I started to notice the same symptoms. It is not as bad as it was before I took it in but it is getting more noticeable. I also still get a slight grind on the started every once in a while when I start the engine. Items I have changed recently: Fuel Pump(10 months ago) Fuel Filter EGR Valve PCV Valve Cam Position Sensor Crank Position Sensor Throttle Position Sensor
