Shake or Vibration Issues
abominable z71 replied to Silver space ship's topic in Troubleshooting & Recalls
The items most affected by temperature swings are all the rubber parts. Tires and pressure, body mounts and fluid inside, and all the suspension bushings, oil viscocities, not only does it seem like the shaking is minimal when it's cold but the truck seems to ride better in general. It's like the rubber is too soft in the heat. Metallurgy is also affected by temperature but small swings are typically neglected for stress and deflection calculations of steel, It would however affect the K value which can contribute to resonance, All of this still doesn't explain why only some trucks have this issue unless all of the trucks are on the edge and only some happen to have all the pieces fall into place to create a vibrator. -

If it's not shaking in the cold which is the same way mine behaves, You will get the operating normal or within spec and sent on your way without them doing anything. -
Geometricaly this won't work, not because the struts are different parts left to right, but because it's a mirror the strut will still be clocked about 20 degrees the wrong direction, I leveled my truck with the 2.5 moto fab and hated it, the truck rode like crap so I went with quicklifts instead. You need a drift punch to help line up the lower strut holes, its a pain but do able.

What's the verdict on the kings versus the quick lifts, I'm sure they're better but are they 5 times better to justify 5x the cost ?

Apparently they have a tough time building anything that doesn't shake. -

We are talking about parts turned in a CNC lathe, They shouldn't be off to the point you can see it with the naked eye. Regardless of the machining tolerance, the amount of mass is only a small part of the equation, rotational speed, natural frequency, and damping ratio all have to be accounted for to determine if a small unbalanced mass will cause an issue. Where the issue arises is when the natural frequency and the input frequency equal one another. This is resonance and the vibration amplitude is very large regardless of the mass value being 3 lbs or 3 grams. -

Depends on what rim you plan on running. Factory wheels the 285 65 18's will fit aftermarket wheels 0 offset or more positive offset should fit as well. -

That's incorrect The rotating mass of the hub would create an imbalance in this situation because the additional material on one side of the hub moves the center of gravity away from the center of the hub. It is true any shape even square can be balanced but only if the center of gravity is located on the axis of rotation. -

The hub itself can be trued in a lathe no problem but if your stud circle is off center you're better off replacing the axle. i think they run about 275 dollars a piece from Yukon. -

Someone knows what the issue is, But those who know are probably way higher up the food chain than the field engineers. The more people who know the problem in GM the more likely it will leak out and they don't want that so the odds are very few people within GM are privy to the information and field engineers are not likely in that circle. -

Yeah a warped rotor would shake your teeth out when you hit the brakes. My girlfriend had a warped rotor on her Jaguar the amount of shaking during braking was unbelievable. -

Trailer brake controller is not related to the rear end ratio. The only trucks that have a 3.73 rear end and 5.3L engine have a special Max Tow package. They have a bigger rear end 9.76" versus the the 9.5". AAM only cuts 3.73 gear sets for the 9.76" rear on the new 12 bolt rears. All trucks with the 5.3 and max tow will also have the factory tow mirrors as they are part of the max tow package as well. My understanding is all 6.2L will also have the 9.76 rear but with a 3.42 unless they have the max tow package as well. Long story short the 3.73 gear set is only available for the 9.76 rear and only on trucks with Max tow package. -

What gear ratio do you have in the rear end? 3.08 and a third order tire vibration will feel the same on the road because they are so close to the same frequency , But a first order tire and 1st drive shaft vibration will feel totally different. -

Actually on BFG's website they are both 33.5" even though they call it a 34, the 305 is 12.2" wide and 12.5" for the 34x12.50. I'm not sure why BFG makes 2 tires so close in sizes. The 305 has a higher load rating at a higher max pressure of 80 psi, max on the 34 is 65 psi. Now you can't find any of this info on their website they have everything all screwed up on there. -

That is the left side rear axle with the brake rotor and caliper removed correct? Are the hub pilot and studs running true? -

Looks great, i'm running 4.5" of lift and the same size rims and offset, What made you decide to go with the 34x12.50 over the 305 65 they're almost identical in size and price? I'm looking at both for my next set of tires but it seems like the 305 65 is more readily available and the 34's have to be ordered. -

My buddy has a 2015 and had hard shifting issues. At first he got the transmission is learning routine, After 6k problem was still there, took in for first complimentary service to local dealer, he bought the truck in Nevada at a different dealer, the only one he could find as a SLT with max tow and a leather bench seat in the front. Anyways, local dealer said maybe it just needed a reflash or program update. Local dealer calls back in 45 minutes and asks if he bought the truck brand new because it was 2 quarts low on transmission fluid. Topped the tranny off and it shifts just like is supposed to. Local dealer said the selling dealer should have caught it because it's parts of the process when receiving the trucks from the factory to check all fluid levels. -

I don't think the turn signals work correctly with the harness either. The harness is required for sle models that didn't have dedicated drl -

Phasing means that the phase of multiple things on the truck rotating at the same speed that have a slight imbalance match up to create a vibration at a higher amplitude. Because the tires have to rotate at different velocities in order for the truck to turn, the imbalance can be in different locations at any given time. imagine each tire as the face of a clock and consider that each tire has a high spot. one located at 12 one at 3 one at 6 and one at 9 o'clock. Ideally they would cancel one another out. Through the course of driving around and making multiple turns imagine all the high spots on each of the 4 tires is at 12 o'clock at the same time. In the first scenario each tire is separated by a phase shift of 90 degrees. In the second scenario there is no phase shift between the tires and the amplitude of each tire vibration combines. What may have not been felt when the high spots were out of phase is now very noticeable. I hope this makes sense. -

Sad, but not at all surprising. Toyota had an issue with the Tacomas that they tried to fix but never completely solved until they released the redesigned truck. It had to do with a carrier bearing on the driveshaft I believe. i think it was made tolerable by shimming the bearing mount. I don't know all the details. -

There's a shocker, What's the old saying about insanity? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Very fitting for this situation, just keep on balancing, vector matching and replacing tires until the new platform get's released. I actually feel bad for the service departments left twisting in the wind to field all the pissed off customer complaints. To exacerbate the issue GM won't even pay for the work they do under warranty after a few attempts. "Vibrating as designed but within specs." At least pharmaceutical companies tell you the product you are buying is going to make you sick and $h!t yourself. GM really needs to mention this fact in their commercials and brochures. Possible side effects of buying our trucks or SUVs include motion sickness, headaches, vertigo and a feeling like someone just jammed a broomstick somewhere very unpleasant. -

It's the measurement from the center of the rim to mounting face. 0 offset means where the wheel mounts to the truck is dead center. negative measurements mean the wheel mounting face is moved by that distance towards the truck making the wheel and tire stick out, the opposite for positive offset. the number is the measurement in millimeters. stock wheels have a + 27 or about 1". so a plus 18 would make the wheel stick out about 9 mm or 3/8" more than the factory.
