4x4 Help For A Newbie

I have an 88 2500 4X4 with a 5 speed and the floor 4X4 shifter. i can get it into 4 wheel, and the reducer for 4 low works but the front wheels dont engage. i have seen a few places on here that the 4 wheel drive actuator is usually the problem but i have not seen any with the same symptoms i have. Should i start with the actuator? THANKS

By all means covert it to the newer style actuator that is available,I had a 1994 with the same issue, converted it to the newer type actuator kit comes with a new actuator and harness,I believe there was GM TSB to addrerss this concern.

so if i go with the stock actuator, it just screws in and clips on the other end... the newer version also screws in but i need a new wiring harness, and posi lok is a whole different ball game and is more expensive.

what is the advantage on the newer version?

Okay, so i replaced the actuator and still no luck... the drive shaft now spins when its engaged so i think the actuator may have been part of it, but the wheels still dont go.

any other ideas?

Did you do the diagnosis in the link I posted?

yes, and the actuator only moved a little.. not as much as the one on my grandpa's truck so i thought that was it.. and im sure it needed replacing anyway but there is some other problem too.
