Brake Line Length .

Hello

 

I blew another frigging brake line the other night and this time its the ones that run along the frame rail from the master cylinder to the ass end of the truck .

 

Does anyone know what length I should buy for these ?

 

Also , doesn't it suck to lose 1 brake line and lose ALL braking in these trucks ? I had to get it towed because I didn't want to wreck it or someone else.

I didn't think there was a line going from the master cylinder to the rear. On my 99 I think it goes from the master cyl to the ABS pump?

Yeah I just looked under there and it does go to the abs pump .

 

They are conveniently located where the drivers side front tire can throw all sorts of road salt and shit up at them , even with the mud flaps .

 

The lines look to be about 5ft but i'm still looking for a solid answer from one of you guys

 

It sux that no one sells pre made lines for these with the factory coil stuff around them.

The coils are half the problem. They trap salt & moisture causing the lines to rust out. I just put a new line on my truck to the back. Get the "easy bend" stuff from Napa. It is sweet. Looks almost like copper, bends almost like copper, but isn't copper. You'll have to flare your own ends. You MUST use double flares. Napa sells the tool.

 

If you're under there, replace all the way from the ABS pump to the flex hose on the rear axle. Then you are done with it, and never have to worry about it again. And you might as well do the lines running across the axle too. Napa had the lines with the coils, which might be useful here. I just used the coated stuff.

Check out this website, Classictube.com. They make prebent lines for alot of trucks. You can get all the lines in stainless steel. I replaced all of mine with stainless. All lines were exact fit.

The line that went wasn't a coiled one . It was the line that goes from the ABS forward and across the front end under the radiator and over to the pass side front brake . The line is approx 11ft long . The coiled ones look pretty bad too . They definitely trap all kinds of grime and shit in them .

 

I would love to go ahead and do all stainless if I had the cash . I'm going with a Napa green coated line , or maybe two as i may put a union in the front because of how the line routes all over the place . I'll let you all know how it turns out .

Hello again .

 

I went with a 25ft roll of NAPA zinc coated steel line for $25 . I would have liked to go with NAPA NiCopp which is the best brake line on the market due to the fact that it can never corrode , but it was twice the cost . I am not made of money that's why I do things myself whenever possible .

 

Anyway I got the 11ft line to the pass. side front brake all plumbed up , with the proper double flares using a double flaring set that I got for $20 . It is important to note that the fittings that go into the ABS pump are larger than the ones that go to the front brake hoses . I found that out after having one perfectly flared with the fitting on the line . So I go and pump the brake some and one of the other 3 coil wrapped lines let go ! Apparently if you so much as breath on these old GM lines , they fail . I am replacing all the lines up front , for sure . 1 down 3 to go . After that I will only have a 2 ft section on the right rear that is not new !

 

If I was one of you guys with the new trucks I would invest in a can of Zinc primer or maybe undercoating or something and coat the lines before they rot out . Funny how a $25,000 truck comes with $20 of non coated steel brake line , isn't it ?
