Airbg Service Warning Light

I just pulled out my steering intermediate shaft to grease it. When it was apart the steering wheel got spun around a few times and now that it is all back together my airbag service light is on. Any ideas what might have caused this?

You didn't get the sir coil centered. It only has about 2-3 turns in it, if it isn't centered when you put it back togeather you break it.

 

To fix you will have to replace it. Remove the air bag and steering wheel and you should be able to replace the coil.

I didn't take the steering colum apart. just removed the intermeadate shaft. How does the coil get broke?

By spinning the steering wheel when the I-shaft is unhooked.

I thought I was being clear but I'll try harder. When the steering wheel is straight ahead and center the coil behind the wheel only has 2-2.5 turns in either direction before it breaks. With the intermediate shaft installed the tires will not allow the steering wheel to turn more then the coil can handle. If you remove the intermediate shaft and turn the wheel even one turn the coil will not be centered in relation to the tires.

It was pretty clear. It was just when you said when you put it back together you break it that threw me off. It actually breaks when the wheel got spun or once it was back together and got turned past it's 2 to 3 turns it broke. Thanks for the help. Now for the next repair..... Any tips on replacing the coil? Guess I better go get a manual.

Make sure you pull the air bag fuse and disconnect the battery. A deploying air bag can kill you.

In the future, it is recommended that you block the steering wheel from turning prior to removal of the i-shaft. Of course GM has a special tool for this, but you can easily loop the seat belt through the steering wheel and lock it down that way. Good luck.

 

On another note: Since you have to replace the clockspring anyways, if you do not have steering wheel audio controls for your truck, you should look into getting the correct clockspring to add steering wheel controls. I don't know what come stock in 04 burbs though.
