Questions About Gm GMT-900 Fog Light Kit

Ok, I got some quick questions about the gm fog light kit, for those that have done it. Specifically, the connection under the fuse box.

 

The harness that's included in the kit, how is the connection made to the pin? Does it have a box connector with 2 wires coming out like the trucks with factory fogs, does it have a small box connector with 1 wire that goes in the same pin as the purple wire? Does it have 1 wire with a small box connector that plugs into a pin NEXT to the purple wire? Long, thin spade that plugs in next to the purple wire?

 

Does it plug in the bottom(where all the oem wires go) or the top of the bottom connector and get sandwiched?

 

I'm trying to use that circuit in my non fog light truck(already got a switch) but I cannot figure out how to tap in there without cutting wires. I have a box connector from an oem fog lamp vehicle that has 2 purple wires coming out, but I really don't want to splice into the oem wiring to install it. If I can figure out how the gm fog lamp kit hooks in to that connector, I can get this all squared away. Maybe even before my weekend trip.

After you pull the cover off the under hood panel, you release the panel itself by raising the two grey handles. The wire plugs in underneath one of the pieces that does not come out. If you are standing next to the fender facing the truck, its the inner left hand one, I think. I would give you the connector location, etc. but I am in Korea and my truck is in the US. Look at the fuse locations in the panel and find the one that says fog. That is where the wire goes, and I think that the fuse is already there too.

 

Oh, and call your truck a GMT900 from now on on this site too please. thanks and let us know

Yea, thanks for the info. Sorry about the nnbs. Too many names for them floating around out there.

 

Now I know how to get to it, and which one it is (you are connect. Standing at the fender looking at engine, it should be the top left grey connector. Fogs should be a purple wire at the pin near the bottom left corner of connector). I now know it does NOT get sandwiched(shorts are bad) and it gets plugged in with the oem wires.

 

Now I just need to figure out how the kit actually plugs in there. Small box connector plugging into the same hole next to the oem one, spade connector, large box with 2 wires and splice the oem etc.

All that is needed at that connector is one wire to hook up to complete the circuit. There is also a ground wire that feeds out to one of the bolts in the frame by the front left body mount (it is an obvious ground with a couple of other grounds already there), but I don't remember where is originates from. Obviously not the box you are hooking power up to, bit I think from the lights themselves. Good grief doing this from memory in another country is a real pain in the ass. I would scan you my directions but, again, its this "whole other country" as Forrest Gump said.

Its not a problem Dlewis, I appreciate what you have given me. The ground should be from the lights, and irrelevant. All grounded wires go back to the same place. A good ground is a good ground is a... you get the idea. Exceptions apply, but not really here. If I can just find a way to plug into that pin, I should be good to go. Question is how.

go back to your junkyard with a jewelers flat tip and simply remove a wire from one of the junker boxes. cut enough off to leave wire to splice to and voila! slide the pin that you salvaged back into you box. i know these come out, i put mine in the wrong spot the first time around lol. there are safety pieces that hold them in that you have to remove to get them out. they are plastic looking straps. should be obvious.

I did that, but wasn't sure what size to get (super small, medium, or large). I ended up getting one from a truck WITH fog lights, which was dumb because its a larger connector with 2 purple wires coming out(switch side, and lights side). Meaning I would have to cut the oem wire. I need to find out what these connectors are called and go buy the right size. :fume:

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
