8.1 Blue Smoke And A Ticking Noise

I have an 01 2500HD crew cab long bed 4x4 with an 8.1. It is my daily driver. I had not started the truck in about 4 days. When I did I saw a large cloud of blue smoke and also noticed a ticking noise under the hood. Question is: What the hell is it and how much is it going to cost??? Is it possible for a novice garage mechanic to fix said issue? I know my way around the outside of an engine and hope that it is possible to fix this myself. Someone mentioned to me that I may have a bad valve guide. OK. Awesome. How can I prove him right or wrong? Any help would be much appreciated.

blue smoke is burnt oil, whiteish smoke is coolant....if its burning oil its probably an internal issue

it MAY be valve seals ,you can have them done using compressed air in cyls ,1 at a time ,

oil can seap by and settle on the bottom of valve while sitting and after you start it ,,pooooof

the ticking is hard to talk about because we cannot hear it over the internet however if the ticking goes away after abit ,that is piston slap ,if it stays it could be anything ,

good luck and dont panic,

wooosaaa !!! say that and rub your earlobes !!!
