If Motor & Tranny Advice Wanted

Hello, great forum y'all have here.

I have a '96 Tahoe (2 dr, 4wd, 5.7l) with about 130K on the odometer.  I started to get a "bump" coming from the rear end when I reach overdrive (though it will do it when in 3rd gear if I have selected 3rd on the column) and maintain a steady speed.  A friend told me that that is a sure sign that my tranny is getting ready to crap out.  Not sure if that is true or not, so I'd like some opinions on that.

If my tranny is in fact on its last leg, what recommendation would you make for a replacement?  I'm not looking to do any of the work myself, as I don't have the time, but would consider buying it direct, and having my mechanic do the installation.  One thing I'd like for you to consider with your recommendations is that I have no idea how much longer my motor will last.  If it decides to take a dump, I'd like a tranny that can handle more horsepower/torque.  You see, if I am going to be replacing the motor, I want something with more power, say up around the 350-400hp range.  In that context, if anyone wants to throw crate motor ideas out, it would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the scrambled thoughts.

Thanks,

Pete
