Service 4WD light

My 2001 is 2.5 yrs old.  At first, I would get the "Service 4WD" message occasionally right after start up, for just a second or so.  Now it's coming on and staying on about 10-15 minutes after I start driving.  Once the light comes on, I can not engage 4WD unless I shut the engine off and restart it.  I've been running 2WD for most of this past winter, as it was very mild here.  Some people seem to have their push-button control in the dash replaced.  Is what I am experiencing the same thing that happened to others with this problem?  Does this problem generate an OBD II code?  Any service bulletins on this issue?  I plan on going to the dealer, but I can't get in for about three weeks.  I'd like to be able to steer them in the right direction.

It could be one of a few things but most likely it's just the switch. Quick and easy fix. I went through the same thing.
