What's in my truck???

Howdy all,

First post here. My apologies if this is in the wrong forum.

I have a 2000 Tahoe Limited and I'm trying to figure out what all I have under the truck. I know it's a 5.7 350 engine, what auto tranny do I have? What kind of rear axle, and how can I tell what the gear ratio is? Is it stamped on a tag and bolted on the pumpkin like Dana axles? Haven't crawled under there yet.

I'm looking to bolt on a few performance mods and I'm trying to keep things in check with what the stock tranny will take. I don't have the cash or time to really beef up the tranny or rear axle, so I'm trying to keep it tame. I really think I want to build a sleeper. You know, stock looking but able to haul @ss when necessary.

Any info would be appreciated. Sorry if this is faq, but I didn't see this type of stuff posted in any of the other forums. Feel free to point me in the right direction if I missed something.

Thanks! :rolleyes:

This forum is fine.....And welcome to it by the way. :jester:

For your tranny, and rear end info, there is a sticker inside your glovebox with a bunch of 3 digit alpha-numeric codes called "RPO" codes.

Go look in there, and compare what you have to THIS listing of codes. That should clear up what factory options you have on there.

As for waking it up, you have to open up the intake, and exhaust in order to make more power.

Cheap way for the intake is a cold air induction kit.

Expensive way is have the heads ported/polished.

Cheap way for the exhaust is a cat-back system.

Expensive way is a full on system from the headers back.

You could install a shift kit, for the tranny to behave a little better.

Then there is the computer. Most of the folks here swear by the Westers PCM. Do a search on it in the forums, and you will find a lot of info on it. Sounds like they are getting at least 25 extra horses from it on a Vortec 350. Thats pretty good for the price.

None of these mods will hurt your existing tranny unless it was screwed up to begin with. You would only have to beef it up (rear end as well) if you are slapping some big HP in there, like a Whipple, or Magnacharger.

Hope this helps :rolleyes:

Your 2000 Tahoe limited has a 5.7L Vortec engine with 4L60e auto tranny. Most likely you have 3.42 rear gears with a locking rear diff. The codes are

GU6 = 3.42

GT4 = 3.73

G80 = locking diff

To get some power that you can use with all later mods, get a K&N FIPK. Also get dual exhaust installed. Your truck already has dual cats and has a dual inlet muffler (just replace muffler back with good stuff). You will see minimal gain from headers and you could always do them later if you want.

Your tranny will hold up until you put some major mods on this thing.

An MSD CD ignition system will make a little difference and ups your MPG on low RPM some.

Upgrade your plug wires with MSD super conductors.

Still looking for more? Try switching to an electric fan set-up.

Do these and then you have to start the serious stuff.
