Stabilitrak: What exactly does it do?

What exactly does the "Stabilitrak" option do? I know that it keeps an eye on all sorts of data and makes adjustments to help prevent rollovers. Does it do so by applying the brakes on selected wheels, by applying more power to selected wheels (I don't know exactly how that would work) or both?

How does it affect offroad performance. I know you can't get the locking rear differential with it and that seems to be a bad thing. If it applies the brakes to spinning wheels while keeping power to non-spinning wheels, however, it may have at least some of the benefits of a locking diff (or am I missing something).

For what it's worth, my contemplated use is (i) daily-driver; (ii) light towing (dirtbikes to riding areas); and (iii) light off-roading (not rock crawling or anything too hardcore).

Generally, do you guys think this is a good option?
