Diesel vs. Gas Torque Converter

Hi,

First off heres the deal. I took a tranny out of my 84 Chevy Diesel Van to be bench rebuilt. After 6 months of hassles with that place I have decided to just use a different tranny I had. The tranny feels soft shifting and it doesnt go more than 50 mph. I think it might be that the ripoff Transmission Shop gave me a gas engine torque converter. From what I understand those will engage at a different RPM than a diesel converter.

 

I took the new tranny out of an '89 Chevy G10 Van w/ a 4.3 V6 w/ a 700r4. The torque converter reads DE6F 8653702. The torque converter that I got from the Transmission shop reads DGCF 8653423. I contacted GM and they gave me 8642992 & 8647903 as the correct converters for an '84 6.2 G20.

 

I will be using the van for music touring and pulling a loaded 5x8 all the time.

 

Is the converter my likely problem? I need a recommendation on what torque converter I should get. Any help will be greatly greatly appreciated.

I am not sure of the part numbers but a diesel torque converter has a lot lower stall speed because it generally does it best below 2800 RPM of so. They tipically stall around 1400 RPM or so in that model year. A gas converter on that engine torque curve would really suck. Can you reclaim your old converter?

I cannot get my torque converter back. A tranny shop ripped me off and I think put a crap transmission with a cars torque converter in. I ordered an rv torque converter for it from O'Reilly and it is supposed to be low enough stall speed for a diesel. So I think its fixed. I need to put a tach on cause it feels like it shifts a little late (rpm's a little but high) but Im not used to listening to a diesel so maybe thats just the way it is. If it is a gas tranny the shift points will be off too. Make sure you add a aux tranny cooler if you have not already done so.
