Just picked up a 99 Denali! Few questions...

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, this is my first post, just picked up a 99 Yukon Denali!

I know it has the tow package, I see the tranny cooler, it has a hitch. Anyone know if the 99 Denali's have an optional heavy duty tow package? I thought I heard somewhere that back in the 95-99 models, yukon's had just a standard tow package and a heavy duty one, anyone know if this is true? Not sure what I have in the Denali.

Also, I can't find the hitch wire plug anywhere! Do they not come wired up from factory? Maybe I'm just being dumb and not seeing it...

And I hear a somewhat loud "buzzing" noise underneath the driver's side rear wheel well area. Sounds like a loud fuel pump or something. Does this mean that my fuel pump might be south?

Also, the 4wd switch flickers on contact or bumps... seems like its a loose wiring, 4wd works fine, its just the switch LED's that flicker. Has anyone pulled this out and just re-soldered the wires?

Thanks for your help!

Not sure about the HD tow package, one of the Denali guys might have a bit more info on that.

The hitch plug should be about 6-8 inches to the left of the hitch receiver. Hanging down below the bumper. It's about two inches in diameter (it's round) and has a flip-up door covering the pins themselves.

The noise is your fuel pump. Mine (on the '02) has been making noise for 40k miles now. Nary an issue with it going out. But they do go out with alarming regularity for some folks around here.

The 4WD switch going out is a common issue, and an easy replacement. I don't think soldering the wires would do much good, as I believe the problem is inside the switch itself.

Oh, and welcome to the forums! Pull up a chair, and stick around. Great bunch of people here, with a virtual crap-ton of information.

In the old body style there was only 1 towing package and you have it. The platform hitch, aux tranny cooler and engine oil cooler are the towing package. That is all that was available.

The 99 Denali does not come pre-wired for a trailer harness from the factory. Look underneath on the driver's side at the back of the frame rail. There will be some wires folded back and taped. The SUVs have this. It will have a little tag that tells what each wire does. There will also be a orange and blue wire. The orange is for 12v+ and the blue is for your trailer brake feed. IF you don't have trailer brakes or need a 12v+ feed don't worry about those. The orange wire is preterminated in the engine comaprtment on the driver's side firewall. You can connect it to either STUD A or STUD B in the relay center to have a fused connection to the battery. The blue wire you need to run inside to your brake controller.

The buzzing is the fuel pump...don't worry about the noise. Doesn't mean it is bad.

The new body style trucks have a common problem with the 4x4 switched going out and causing the 4wd to not work. However on the old body style trucks (like your 99 Denali) the most common problem with the switch is the light blinking. It is only a problem with the light and not the function of the switch. Those switches sell pretty cheap on ebay. You need one from a 98-99 Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban or 99-00 Escalade/Denali. Make sure it says "Autotrac" on the switch if you buy one. The pickups didn't have autotrac but the switch looks almost the same.

Another question about towing...

I plan to use this SUV to tow my race car + open trailer total about 5,000 lbs. Probably have tools, jack, race tires in the back of the SUV as well. Will my tow package from factory do the job okay? The track is about 70 miles from where I live and all hwy driving 60mph max.

The trailer I'm going to use at first is just something I rent from uhaul, eventually will buy a trailer but wanted to see how the Yukon handles it.

And finally, tongues for the hitches, what type to get? I know that they have different types where the tongue angles down lower or higher? Ball size? Sorry, I'm new to this, thanks!

It should pull that fine. I pull my vette with my 2-door Tahoe and your Denali will handle the trailer a little better.

The angle that you want for the hitch depends on what trailer you will be using. The height of the trailer and how much your trucks squats when loaded will determine which height the ball mount should be. Of course how you load the trailer will affect that too.

Get the ball knob size that matches the trailer you are gonna use too. Most common is 2".
