99 gmc new to me,few ??

Recommended Posts

just bought a 99 gmc 3dr 4wd.its a SLT and has everything.heated buckets etc. wondering a few things.   it has 39k on it now and dealer will give me extended warranty on it.is it worth it?as of now i have NO warranty.vehicle was a buddys of mine before,he turned it in at end of lease and i purchased it.so i do know it was well taken care of.for peace of mind im gonna get it but was wondering if they try to screw you when in for service or repairs.but i do have the sticking pedal, rarely, but its there.ive read that it requires a new throttle body.also i have a loose steering shaft.which ive also read needs replacing to newer design.if i went to dealer, with no warranty and said i want those things replaced would he say "sure, but its gonna cost you". also is there any way to check for recalls on the net? thanks.    Rob

I've often thought that the extended warranty was a gamble...  They are expensive and I'm not sure how many people actually recover their costs.  Warranty companies (they are actually insurance companies) aren't in the business to lose money.  You also have to read the fine print too.  Usually you have a deductable every time you take the truck in for service and some warranties aren't truly "bumper to bumper".  You'll have to wrestle with that decision ???

As for the steering shaft and throttle body there are factory "technical service bullitens" (TSB's) on those items.  The truck is only 3K over the factory warranty and I'll bet you a decent dealer will repair those problems at no charge for you since they are common problems.  If the dealer will fix them, then I personally would skip the "Grand" for the warranty and buy yourself some nice mods for your new truck!!!  Enjoy your new ride...

You need to look at the warranty coverage very carefully.

Shaners is right in everything he told you. I think it is worth it to take the gamble.

My wife's Olds had to have $700 worth of brake work and a few hundred on the tranny. With my $50 deductible, I have a total of $100 invested in nearly $1000 worth of work.

My '95 truck motor went bad after 62,000 miles. Way beyond the factory 3/36 warranty. Due to the $700 extended warranty I purchased with the truck, a new, factory 5.7l cost me $50.

The total bill to my warranty company? $4200.00.

I think that they are worth it. I would not buy the "Super Premium Platinum Wipe Your Butt For You" Warranty. Mine are one step below. It's been my experience that dealer Svc Depts take forever to do simple stuff like oil changes. I don't want to be without my truck all day for that. It's too easy to take it somewhere els or do it myself.

On the truck, I did have to show all my oil change reciepts to prove that I did take care of the vehicle.
