Truck stalling

Recommended Posts

I need some help trouble shooting my problem. My truck seems to be stalling at random times. Driving steady down the freeway and all of a sudden it dies. No sputter, warning or anything. It won't restart without resetting the alarm and shutting it off again. Is this likely some sort of short in the alarm system, a fuel delivery issue or what? What tests can I do to try to avoid a trick to the dealer and a really expensive repair bill. 2500HD with 8.1 and allison. 2002

Crank position sensor.

how did you come up with that. I agree that it is a posiblity, but with the info he gave how did you figure it is the cps.

Because its fairly common on the 8.1s and thats exactly what happens when the CPS goes bad.

I know its common, but it doesn't explain why "It won't restart without resetting the alarm and shutting it off again." as he states

As mentioned, it's VERY common. I ignored the alarm comment because alarms don't cause a vehicle to stall. Not start maybe, but once it's running, they can't shut off the engine. Unless he has the 1 in 10,000 aftermarket alarms that kill the ignition, which I seriously doubt.

Alarm is factory. Truck will not restart without the alarm being reset. A whole lot of fun putting the truck in neutral and playing with the key fob while coasting on the freeway.

Truck will not start at all sometimes while still in the driveway without fiddling with the alarm a few times.

If this is the "CPS" is that something your average (OK, so I'm actually way below average) weekend mechanic can fix on his own? Is this covered in your standard Chiltons manual?

Try thinking before typing.

So just sit there, read, and let the grown ups handle thing from here
