1997 gmc with a 454, ac compressor is leaking from behind the pully/clutch assembly, is there a seal there that can be replaced by the do it yourselfer instead of buying another rebuilt one? if it is possible what is the part # for the rebuild kit and do you need any special tools ? thanks

YES THERE IS A SEAL FOR THE COMPRESSOR IT COST ABOUT $30-$35, THERE IS TOOLS YOU NEED TO DO THIS, 1ST YOU NEED A COMPRESSOR CLUTCH/HUB REMOVER TOOL, THEN THE SEAL REMOVER TOOL, AND ALSO AT LEAST A AC VACUUM PUMP TO PULL THE SYSTEM UNDER VACUUM ONCE YOU PUT EVERY THING BACK TOGETHER. THE TOOL ARE ABOUT $50-$100 AND THE VACUUM PUMP IS ABOUT $150-$250 FROM EBAY, THEN YOU HAVE TO PUT FREON IN THE SYSTEM 3-4 CANS OF R134A AT $15 A CAN AND THE HOSE TO PUT IT INTO THE SYSTEM $5-$10

TOTAL OF DO IT YOU SELF $280-$455

COMPARED TO A SHOP IT TAKES 2.5 HOURS EST AT $75.00 AN HOUR

PARTS

SEAL $35

R134a $60

TOTAL AT A SHOP $280-$300 RUFF EST

ITS NOT WORTH BUYING TO TOOLS IF YOU ARE ONLY GOING TO DUE IT ONCE, SECOND AC JOBS CAN BE A PAIN IN THE A$$ IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING

You can get loaner tools for most of this at Auto Zone. You just have to put down a deposit for the tool, that you will get back when you return it. I recently fixed a leak in my AC, and used a loaner vacuum pump from Auto Zone. After my $200.00 deposit was returned, all it cost me was $3.95 for replacement valve seals, 13.99 per can of R134A, and about one hour of my time. You do need to know what you are doing, or at least follow the advise of a competent professional. A lot of money can be wasted trying to diagnose and fix an AC system. Don't ask me how I know.

all i want to do is replace the seal myself, i have a shop that i can take it to after i get it back together and they will pull a vacuume on it and charge it for me. so is it just called a compressor seal ?
