'02 Sierra 1500 2wd W/g80 Locking Rear...

As the title says...getting ready to change the rear axle fluid on my used (but new to me) '02 Sierra 1500. Tag shows it has the G80 locking rear axle.

I'm gonna pull the drain plug on the underside of the pumpkin, and drain it that way...along with a flush of some "cheap" synth. axle fluid to help wash anything out.

Do I need an additive for the G80 rear, or will some Mobil-1 Full Synthetic LS Gear Lube 75W-90 alone do the trick (according the Mobile's website, it will be good enough)?

What's the torque spec for the drain plug on the rear axle? Not the fill plug...the drain?

Any tricks to this (should be straight forward...)?

Thanks!

I'm running Mobil-1 Snthetic in my G80 as well as many others without any problems. No additives are required. Mine is a 2005 and does not have a drain plug but according to the specs I looked up on your 02, the drain plug for all except 9.75" axle is 24 lb ft and the 9.75" is 20 lb ft. The fill plug torque for all except 9.75" is 24 lb ft and the 9.75" is 15 lb ft.

Hey thanks for the reply.

Just realized the owners manual says NOTHING about how much to use. What's the correct amount (I know where the "fill area" high and low lines are...but approx. how much fluid?)?

Thanks.
