:ughdance: I am stuck between using Valvoline Premium Conventional 10W-30 or Mobil Clean 5000 10W-30 in my 2006 Chevrolet Silverado. I have the 5.3L V-8 engine. I would like to know what others experiences or opinions would be. I also perform 3,000 mile oil changes...easy insurance. Thanks for the input!

I run the regular Mobil 1 synthetic and change every 5,000 miles or so. Been doing that since the first 5K and I'm up to 200K ans she still burns no oil in between changes.

Honestly, I think any quality dino oil or synthetic will do fine so long as you change it regularly. You will probably see less sludge buildup over time with synthetic. Inside my valve covers looks pretty much new. I run synthetic because I can do it myself for the roughly the same $$ an oil change place charges me for dino oil changes.

I also drain and fill the trans pan every other oil change keeping the fluid nice and fresh in between trans filter changes.

I follow the owners manual for the most part so I use 5w30 and will follow the OLM. To make me feel better about the longish OCI's, I use synthetic oil.

FWIW, My wife's Maxima goes 7,500mi between oil changes (per owners maunal) with 5w30 syn oil. Been doing this for a few years and it passes the stringent "flashlight pointed down the filler cap reveals clean metal" test.

I will admit it took some mental adjustment time for me to be happy with extending my vehicle OCI's.

Are you uncomfortable with 5w30 or following the OLM?

I am not comfortable using the OLM. I would rather keep a tight schedule on changing the oil. As far as using 10W-30...At operating temperatures most 10W-30's have a hair less viscosity than 5W-30's. I think the 10W-30 oils could help on fuel mileage more than 5W-30's.

i have used mobil clean 5000 for a while now in my moms minivan w/ a 3.8 v6. so far its been great and no problems at all...I mean come on, im not going to give a dodge minivan mobil 1 synthetic, its not deserving of that haha...i save the best for the best.(gm v8's). In all seriousness though, i believe mobil clean 5000 is a good oil, better than your average dino oil, thats for sure. id treat that 5.3 to some mobil 1 synthetic which is what i use in my 00' 5.3. It runs as good as it did when it was new.

I don't see anything wrong with using conventional oil if you stick to 3,000 mile oil changes. I think using a premium oil filter is more worth worrying about.

I ran the Mobil Clean 5000 in a 5w-30 in my 99. I changed it every 3-5k (never over 5 though). When I traded the truck in last March it had 140k+ miles on it and didnt burn a drop of oil. I am also running it in my 07 as well as the wife's 05 Tahoe. So nothing bad to say here.

p.s I always run AC Delco filters

Wade, I would have to agree with you 100% concerning the filter. I have always believed in spending a little extra money and using a premium filter. I personaly use CARQUEST Premium (Wix) filters but have nothing against AC Filters.

Many of the quick lube centers use filters that cost them in the $1.00 range or maybe even less. Not all quick lube centers but many of them do this. I do not think there are many members of this forum who use these services but just in case, watch what they are screwing on your truck. Some how a $1.00 oil filter on a $35,000 truck just does not seem right. :)
