92Rustang Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 Hey guys I just did a new intake gasket install this weekend. When I went to clean the intake I noticed a liquid in the back of the intake. I turned it in every direction but could not get it out. It is oil and I think it is coming from the PCV, but is this normal? There seems to be a lot in there. Thanks
'94 9c1 novice Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 Yep. Normal. I did my intake gasket because I thought I had an intake leak. Turned out to be the water pump. Anyway, I wanted to clean my intake ports out because of all the crust built up and when I tilted the intake with the throttle body near the floor, about 2 to 3 oz. of oil drolled out. I did a little resarch and found out this is a problem with this style intake. Fortunately for us, the PCV hose is connected at the top and not near the throttle body like on some Vettes and F-bodies. There is a "catch can" mod they have been doing to keep the oil from getting into the intake. I cleaned the oil out of my intake with some brake cleaner and kept tilting it until very little came out. I figured it was 150k miles of oil but wasn't enough to worry about. Not sure how to get it out after it's been reinstalled though. Hope this helps.
C & A s Dad Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 Be very careful what you clean inside the intake with. It is coated with a "teflon" type substance and some cleaners will remove the coating.
'94 9c1 novice Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 150k on the truck & covered with years of oil. I'm sure the brake cleaner didn't hurt. The teflon coating was long gone by now. I was wondering myself what to clean it with, mainly the contact surface for the gasket, but couldn't find ANYTHING online about cleaning the internals of a plastic intake so I went with a oil solvent. If it was a new truck I might be concerned. Couldn't make things worse than what they already were.
