Researching retractable bed covers as I'm looking into doing something similar, but a little more unique, too. I have the GM Accessories sportbar and Baja Designs 40" light bar mounted on top. I intend to keep that setup while having a functional bed cover that I can also mount a tent above, most likely using the Thule mounting bars. I'm leaning towards Thule, and waiting to see if a local shop can come up with a way to make a Retrax be cover work with the sportbar on a short bed. I also have Baja Designs lights mounted to the hood hinges. There will be more in the near future. All electrical is mounted to the GM Upfitter auxiliary switches to the left of the steering wheel in the knee bolster. Planned future mods include the Rough Country 10" light bars for the grill, Baja Designs rock lights in the wheel wells, and an ARB air compressor mounted in the bed. I'm hoping somebody will come up with a hidden winch bracket for the front of the truck without using an aftermarket bumper. I want to mount a 12k or 14k winch in there. Part of this desire for an overland build is my oldest kid told me he wants to go do stuff in nature. His 11th birthday is in 4 weeks, and he asked to go fishing instead of toys or video games. I discussed this further with him over dinner one night and it lead to him wanting to do more stuff with me like hunting deer and fowl. He's an introvert and it's sometimes very difficult for me to get a read on him. The fact he opened up about this was very satisfying. We have a fishing trip in the Pacific scheduled for his birthday. Neither of us have ever fished. I'm not much into fishing, but love the outdoors. I'm very excited for this trip, but really look forward to taking the truck out to go camping on a hunting trip. Thanks, but I have my concerns about those types of covers. Particularly security. I'll often have firearms and ammo in the back of truck, in addition to the half dozen that are already in the cab.

I was able to look up the install instructions for the Roll-n-Lock. It's a no-go, unless my is incorrect. Installation requires use of the hole in the bed wall fitfully under the front stake pocket that has the round plug in it. The sportbar from GM Accessories that I have on my truck already occupies that space. I do not see a way that both the sportbar and tonneau cover canister can use that space together.

Charles, thank you for posting up. I went to the local Retrax dealer I mentioned previously to take a look at the Retrax covers. They believe there is going to be an issue with the setup I'm considering due to the sport bar I have, and want to keep. They are investigating whether or not a modification would work. For the time, I'll standby. Do you have any pics of the Retrax along the bed rails? That's where all the concern is right now.

There's no bulb, unless you consider the whole fog light assembly a bulb. Imagine the outrage for a LED headlight that's $600-$1,000.

When you think about light bulbs we know they aren't covered under warranty. However, several of the lights on the upper level trims don't have bulbs to replace because they are LED. For example, I have a 2020 Trail Boss LT. From the factory the headlights, tail lights, and fog lights are all LED. Some models, such as LTZ, High Country, and those with the Midnight Edition package also have LED turn signals. Now, here's the purpose of my thread. My left fog light is out. I went to pull the bulb so I could get a number and be able to replace it, however I found out there's no bulb. The light sticker plugs into the whole light assembly. When I looked up the cost for a replacement fog light on GMPartsDirect I found no bulb listed, and the whole light assembly is over $100. Thinking I would find the part cheaper at Rock Auto, I searched there, too. That's when I became aware there's a core charge for the fog light of $50. With the core charge, on Rock Auto the cost for the fog light is $166. Now, if this was a simple bulb I could see event laughing and telling my to spend $2 to get a knew bulb, but that's clearly not an option. And, half the time I use my fog lights the left light will come on. However, a few minutes down the road and it'll start randomly flashing. The other half the time it doesn't light up. Do you think the dealer will warranty the lamp, or are they going to try selling me?

I found a local authorized dealer for both Retrax and Roll-n-Lock. Looking at their website they have a Retrax on display. Hopefully the same can be said for the other brand. My schedule is busy, and I'm trying to find an opportunity to go to the dealer and see what they have. Leaning towards a powered Retrax with the poly finish.

My neighbor ordered a truck a few months ago, ejecting it to arrive in time for him to return from his deployment and start driving it. The truck, a Custom Trail Boss with the 6.2, got held up. He ended up settling for another Custom Trail Boss that was on the dealer's lot that had a 5.3 with AFM and 6-speed. The truck has been compete garbage. At 1,100 miles the engine went. The tech found metal pieces in the engine that didn't belong to anything else in the engine. He gets the truck back and a week later the trans overheats. He expected the dealership to find nothing, but turned out the valve weren't opening to increase cooling, or so I've been told. Truck could be complete and returned this week, and the math puts it at 29 days in the shop. That's 1 day short of lemon law in California. In the meantime, he's working with GM to have them buy back the truck. When I asked about the status on the truck he originally ordered, he said the dealer told him it will hasn't shipped. The dealer was trying to snag another 6.2 Custom Trail Boss that was originally headed to Texas, but that truck also got held up. Now GM is saying that if he wants to complete the buyback it'll take a few weeks, but it could take a few months to get one of the 2 Custom Trail Boss 6.2s. Now he's looking at other makes, and even used Chevy 2500s that are a few years older. This whole fiasco is really messed up. He's understandably frustrated. He's GM loyal, but GM may be losing that loyalty.

My truck bed is more like an extra large trunk on a passenger car. Camping chairs, camping tables, 10' canopy, wagon, cooler, baseball bags and various bats, etc. It has been used to haul things for my family or neighbors, but that requires removing everything from the truck bed, plus my tonneau. If I can avoid doing that, I will. I use it more like a large SUV, but it's more versatile than a Suburban and that has paid off a few times. All in all, it's just a matter of different strokes for different folks.

I've been doing a lot of research on which way to go with this Every option has its pros and cons. I was about to pull the trigger on a powerfold one that has the side rails for the Thule crossbars so I could install a roof mount tent over the bed. But, when I did the math and then the measurements to see if it would work, it turned out it won't, so anything with the side rails for the crossbars is out. Besides, I probably would've had to modify the side rails to make it work with the sport bar. I was prepared to do that. Then, I started looking at the manually operated Retrax MX, but after measuring the side of the sport bar where it mounts to the bedside, I determined that wouldn't be a good idea either. The sport bar is almost 4 feet long. Even though the canister for the Retrax is about a foot forward from the front of the bed, it's still not close enough to reach around the sport bar and grab it to close. This brings up the curiosity of modifying it, ie, could I mount one end of a strap to the end of the Retrax MX so I could pull it closed from the back of the truck, with the tailgate closed of course? If easily installing a strap isn't viable, there is the remote operated power open/close version. I'm confident I could handle the install. Seems a lot easier than installing the upfitter switches. I hate to spend $700 more for the powered version, but it seems like this may be the required direction to go. I'll either use double-sided tape to mount one of the fobs onto the sidewall of the truck bed, are eliminate the remote signal receiver and mount switches inside the cab and inside the truck bed. What are your thoughts on what I should do here?

The gap between the bed and tailgate will cause you to slowly lose some of your load as you drive down the road, unless you do something to cover the gap like use a tarp. It may be a cubic yard when it initially gets loaded, but that doesn't mean it'll be a cubic yard when you get to your destination. Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk

Check the plug where the cable that came through the firewall is connected. If not in far enough, or in the wrong slot when you plugged it into the provided receptacle then you could be experiencing what you described. This is a while other conversation that'll deal this thread. I'm not going to say much because of that, but due to being quoted I'll respond briefly. My kids have never been called mini-me's. They are either crotch goblins or s**t-sticks. The title is dependant upon their current behavior. I raise my crotch goblins. Nobody is being paid to run them when I can do it for free. Disney Channel and Nickelodeon is where they learn to plot and manipulate, but it doesn't work on me. Mommy and daddy both served this country, and daddy knows what it means to bleed and be willing to die for our freedom. As such, that's how my kids are indoctrinated -- with liberty and justice for all. Getting a truck was part of the master plan. They learn how to be self-sufficient. For example, my oldest said he wants to learn how to fish for his birthday. I am seriously entertaining that idea. I've never fished, but it's not too late to learn. Thanks for the reply. I'm not concerned about the space the canister takes up at the front of the bed. With the sport bar that space is pretty much useless anyways. Can't sit in a camping chair all the way back there due to head clearance and the side panels making it impossible to see. As for snow, that's not currently an issue due to living in San Diego, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't throw caution to the wind. I (meaning my wife) have been stationed in Chicago, Philadelphia, and Norfolk, VA throughout her career. I'm also from Salt Lake City. Therefore, snow is a reality later on down the road. The Roll-n-Lock is advertising a 500 lbs weight limit on top. I'll look more closely at the Retrax. One thing I'm leaning towards right now is mounting a rooftop tent on top of the tonneau cover via the Thule crossrails. With the ability to pack food, bedding, campfire supplies, and maybe an outdoor shower in the bed of the truck, I can make the Trail Boss a solid camping option. My neighbor has been asking me to go to Superstition Mountain with his family on an almost weekly basis (when his Custom TB isn't in the shop). My truck has the short bed. It also has the GM sport bar. I've been running the Rough Country hard trifold tonneau since I bought the truck. It works great! There's nothing wrong with it. As several ex-girlfriends have told me, "It's not you. It's me." That really is the case in this situation. I wrote the book on social distancing before COVID ever became a thing. At my kids baseball practices and games I prefer to sit in the bed of my truck in a lawn chair and watch everything. I hate being around others. Problem is, I'm in Kommiefornia, and social distancing is still required. This means my wife now wants to sit in the back of the truck. She said it's the best seat at the game. However, with the sport bar the trifold cover I currently have only allows the first part of the cover to be opened. I'm now thinking about a retractable cover. I've been looking at the various retractable covers, such as Embark Max by Advantage and the retractable cover by Roll-n-Lock. I'm curious what has and hasn't worked for others in the past and present? I'm considering power open/close models, but if they are a PITA to maintain functionality then i don't mind going with manual operation. The sport bar mounting flanges take up almost the entire width of the top plastic cover of the bed walls, so the tonneau cover weather gasket overlap is very important. I think you meant 25 and and 20 amp. Iirc, switches 1, 4, and 5 are 25 amp. Switches 2 and 3 are 20 amp. I forget the wire colors at the moment. Watch your speed in Virginia. 81 mph and over is reckless driving. They have a really solid law on this. In a nutshell, 20 over the posted limit, or more than 80 mph is an automatic reckless and they can impound your car. As for your mpg, south of Richmond on I-85 is pretty much easy cruising downhill.
