Clicking Noise?

Hey,

I am new to this forum and recently got a 1992 gmc seirra. It is now making a weird clicking noise towards the front when driving but not in reverse (I don't know if that matters or not) I changed out the u-joints and it didn't make a difference. I am guessing its the transfer case now but i am not sure. Any advice is appreciated.

Sounds more likely to be a CV shaft. Check your boots for damage, and also do some full lock turns in a parking area. Accelerate forward and reverse and see if you hear the problem.

sorry it took so long for me to reply but thanks for the input. Did you mean that if i do hear the sound when i turn its probably th cv joint?

You said the noise it towards the front. The front driveshaft does not turn in 2wd. You are in 2wd, right?

Anyway, the CV shafts can go bad and make a clicking noise. And they are always turning, even in 4wd. I've had them go bad enough to "grab", and move the steering wheel side to side. Start with a visual inspection. Check all four boots closely for cracking or damage. If they are real bad, you can see where they sling the grease all around the wheel well, suspension, etc. If you see damage, replace the shaft. It is also possible to have damage/wear inside the joint itself with no visible damage to the boot.

They usually make the most noise when turned fully one side or the other, and when accelerating. That's why I suggested my initial diagnosis. Find an empty parking lot, put the windows down and radio off. Just drive around slowly, and make lots of turns. Turn the wheel as far as it will go each way.

This should help identify bad CV joints.

Need more information that just clicking noise. Does it happen when turning? Driving? Could be bad ball joints, idler arms, any number of things. Just need more info.

I hear the noise all the time mostly when i start out in first gear. I went to a parking lot and did full turns with it and it sounds the same. One of the rubber boots has a hole in it, but its the one that connects to the tie rod. I am thinking it might be someting with my transmission but i dont really know i am really bad at knowing whats wrong by noises and stuff. thanks again for the replies.

I had a 94 k1500 chevy that made a constant clicking noise down by the trans tunnel. Took 2 years to find out it was a broken fuel or trans cooler line clip. I cant remeber which one, anyways it was allowing the line to vibrate against the transmisson housing causing the noise!
