Changing Liscense Plate Bulb

I'm embarassed to ask this, but I figured oh well. I got replacement bulb from Napa, (which is wrong BTW) and was gonna change a burnt out bulb. I have no trouble getting the socket out, but when I tried pulling the bulb out, it broke. How do you pull the darn thing out.

IIRC when I replaced one of mine the base of the bulb had rusted into the contacts. The bulb broke as you mentioned in the socket. I took a small flat blade screwdriver to remove the rest of the bulb, sprayed the socket real good with WD 40 the clean it out, then installed the new bulb.
