Speaker "crackle"

I just noticed tonight that my '06 has a definite crackle in the right front door speaker - it's coming from the speaker closest to the front - I believe it's the one carrying more of hte bass. I just picked up the truck last Friday and I thought it sounded good, but that's 'cause I had the tunes cranked up a little. Tonight I had the volume a little quieter, listening to some talk radio, and I noticed it.

Now, besides telling me to keep the volume up  , does anyone have any thoughts? Is this speaker blown? And if so, how easy is it to get at - assumeing the door panel has to come off.

I'm not sure if this would be covered inteh GM Optimum used car warranty, but I'll look into that. In the meantime, any thoughts?

Thanks.

Its probably a torn cone or a damaged voice coil. You'll most likely have to replace the speaker. Are they components? You would have a tweeter separate from the woofer. If you find out which one it is you may be able to order one online or get it from a junk yard. Or the best option is to buy a whole set and do both doors. The doors are pretty easy to get off.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes, there are two speakers per door. Like I said, this is hte one closest to the floor - I believe it would be the woofer.

Is there some info somewhere that would tell me how to remove the inner door panels? Where the fasteners are?

Thanks again.

That would be the woofer. The fasteners are a few screws and clips. I believe there is a screw behind the inside handle to open the door. If you have power windows and locks then its just a matter of undoing the plugs once you get the panel undone. There will be more screws around the edge. Also may be some little ribbed plastic things that help hold it. Just give it a little tug. The Panel is going to want to come out and up because there is a lip that tucks down into the door.

Funny you mention this. I am having that crackle too. I went to the stealership to get a new speaker. I can take some pics of the replacement if you want. I also drive an 06 sierra. I have taken the door panel off a few times and its quite simple.

Photos would be FANTASTIC - Thanks!!! How much did you pay for the speaker?

:P $110 CDN which worked out to $115.50 total. It only took them 12 hours to order me one in though!

I think I will have time either today or tomorrow to take some pics of the replace.

You can buy a decent set of component speakers that will replace the woofer and tweater for cheaper than that. And you would be able to do both doors because it will come as a set.

Is that for 1 or 2? I'm thinking 2, because a dealer here in town quoted me $56 for one.

I'd probably look into that - any suggestions?

It was for 1 bose speaker. Yeah I could probably replace them with aftermarket speakers but I didn't want to drill into the door or get a custom bracket.

:( Did they at least use vaseline when they bent you over like that?

I have the same crackle on my 07 Silverado on my front speakers. I tried to get the dealer to replace them while it was still under bumper to bumper warranty and they wouldn't because they said they couldn't duplicated it and it was probably my speaker settings... Ugh.

I took some pictures of my door yesterday. I remember seeing a good in depth door removal link somewhere. The new speaker sounds soooooo much better!

I will post up some pics when I get home.
