What year and engine? The pump should be around $100 US at an autoparts store. If it takes $800 in labor and antifreeze, you are getting the shaft.

shop called around $380 can ,not sure it thats with labour .the only other problem is the engine light is on but has been for months my bet is the 02 or something like that.

What are the details on your ride. I have done enough small block water pumps that they are pretty much a couple hour job, accounting for beverage consumption as well. A water pump R&R labor rate books out at 1.3 hours, that's for a mechanics guide. This is really something you can tackle in your garage, if it's heated of course (I feel for you guys in Canada).

... had my water pump replaced last summer.. along with a few other minor maintenance things on my 97 C2500 5.7LVortec

... pump was ~$150 (yah... we pay more for parts in Canada, eh!)

... labour was 2.5 hrs @ ~$95/hr

... put shop supplies and taxes on that and it would come to about $450 - $475 ($Can) for the water pump job

... get the mechanic to scan the codes to see what is causing the check engine light to come on... could be any number of things

Based on what Rod said in his post your quote is probably in line (assuming you are having some things done that he didn't). Still a little expensive for me. If you have the facilities and tools, I would try to take care of this yourself. It really isn't that difficult. Good luck.

If my conversion math is correct, that would be $542USD. The thing you need to weigh in is that it's done and on the road in a day, and you didn't freeze your nuggets off getting it running..... If you are comfortable with the price you paid for the benefit you received, that's all that matters.
