Transmission Issues?

Good evening and thank you for your input,

I was driving my truck tonight on lunch from work, when I came to a stop sign, the truck made a sound like I put it in park while it was still moving (clicking-ish sound.) then it was kinda grinding in first gear only. shifted a little hard to second (like it always has) and was fine in second and third gear, didn't go fast enough for fourth. Then after a few stop signs it was making a whirring sound in first gear only, it was moving just fine though. It would shift into second and the whirring sound would stop. I let it set for a few hours and when I drove it home it was still whirring in first gear and upshifting hard through all the gears. It seemed fine at highway speeds though, but still makes the whirring sound in first gear.

(I had to drive it home or at least as far as it would take me, I live 20miles from my work a towjob sould have been astronomical)

I checked the tranny fluid and it looked good and it was full. I am going to drop the pan and change the filter tomorrow. I was most worried by the initial noise like I put it in park while moving.

FYI: my truck is a 1992 GMC Z71 4x4 with 1965xx miles on the odo.

Any one have any Ideas????????

first of all, changing the oil and filter will NOT fix a mechanical noise so don't bother, your tranny is finished and needs to come out and apart for an estimate to repair or replace the tranny ,thats it, thats all ,

truck is old ,think hard about whether to fix it or not.its a nice looking truck though

good luck

+1 ... your transmission is worn out ... a pan drop/filter change/fluid topup will not help it at all.

... consider a total transmission and torque converter rebuild from a trusted local mechanic .... OR a rebuilt transmission from GM that comes with a good warranty...

... you got almost 200,000 miles out of this transmission ... that is more than the average life

y a ,i have put alot of SRTAs in because the 3 yr warranty is a no brainer,it also comes with a cooler flush and flow rate thru the cooler checked and recorded for warranty purposes .

the trannies are always overnight away so leave it the day before and pick it up the next day and drive away.

I put 1 in my old girl before I left the dealer because of the smokin deal I got lol,, 1.5 yrs left

I pulled the pan and sure enough a needle bearing had came apart and took out a planetary gear. I am going to get a remanned put in, I am calling Certified Transmission tomorrow and have them come and get it. I agree, the 3 year warranty is a no brainer.

Thanks for all your input. I was hoping/praying it would be something easy.

Good Luck on keeping that good looking truck running ... don't know what you have to pay in your neighbourhood to get this trans work this done ... but I have no regrets forking out the $1600 plus R&R labour to have mine totally rebuilt... still cheaper than a new truck... WAYYYY CHEAPER

It's going to cost in the neighbor hood of 1750.00 all said to get it done. They were trying to sell me on letting them "align my gear indicator" they wanted a 100 to do that and another 100 to service the transfer case. I would think that the "alignment would be included so I declined that. but I did ok them to do the transfer case service. But it is hard to find a truck at a good price anymore. So it's well worth it.
