Loudness from Flowmaster or Gibson Exhaust?

Recommended Posts

I'm wanting to install a Flowmaster or Gibson dual exhaust on our 2002 2500HD 4X4 6.0 L.

I want to go with a dual inlet & dual outlet muffler & exit both pipes behind the passenger rear tire.

Has anyone done this and how much louder can I expect it to be from the factory muffler

I just had the Gibson Heavy Guage 409 Stainless Steel Headers and Gibson Dual 2 1/2 inch Sport Truck Aluminized Steel cat-back exhaust put on my truck yesterday. The exhaust and headers fit perfect with no modifications necessary. It has a mellow/throaty sound and according to the muffler shop, who also sells Flowmasters, quieter than the Flowmasters. My wife drives the truck 90% of the time and she likes them, I guess that is what counts! Noise in the cab is fine, but they are louder than stock. My wife states she notices better response when accelerating (lead foot) and seems to have the power and torque we will be looking for.

We pull a fifth wheel which weighs in at about 9,700 lbs fully loaded and was looking for a bit more hp and torque.

Good luck on whatever you choose.

2002 GMC 2500HD, extended cab, short bed, 6.0, 4.10 gears.

JAZZ 2760RL fifth wheel.

PS: The Gibson exhaust has two going in and two going out and exit behind the right rear tire. Excellent chrome tips come with the package. I would suggest you go to Gibsons web site and look at their stuff.

Can you post a pictire of your Gibson exhaust?

Did the shop have to do any pipe cutting to take the factory muffler off and was the Gibson installation a total bolt on?

We are looking to purchase a camper in the very near future, this is one reason why we went with the 2500HD. It could be a fifth wheel or a tag-a-long.

Our truck is similar in nature.

Do you have any problems with your fifith wheel trailer coming close to hitting your cab during turning movements or does your hitch have a slider feature?

Thanks for your reply!!!

I have a 2001, 2500HD, CC, D/A Short bed and have never hit the cab with a short bed in over 7 years pulling with short beds. I do not have a slider either. I just have the extended tongue on the fifth wheel camper pin. I think it is about 6" to 8" longer than stock. If you jack knife the camper it would probably hit, but who in their right mind would have to jack knife a trailer pulling or parking. The slider might give you peace of mind if you are buying a new hitch, but in normal instances you do not need it. Also I have never had a pinch of sway out of the fifth wheel, very solid while towing all the way up to 80mph.

KELLY: I DON'T KNOW HOW TO ATTACH A PICTURE TO THIS SITE SO I WILL E-MAIL YOU SOME PICTURES.

THE MUFFLER SHOP CHARGED ME $50.00 TO INSTALL THE CAT-BACK MUFFLER SYSTEM. I RECALL THE INSTRUCTIONS STATING THAT YOU MAKE A CUT ABOUT 10" IN FRONT OF THE STOCK MUFFLER THEN REMOVE THE MUFFLER ON BACK. ACCORDING TO MY FRIEND, WHO OWNS THE MUFFLER SHOP, HE SAID IT WAS VERY SIMPLE TO INSTALL AND WAS A TOTAL 'BOLT ON' SYSTEM. HE WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH QUALITY AND EASE OF INSTALLATION.

AS FOR SOUND, IT IS EXCELLENT. WHEN YOU GET TO YOUR DESIRED SPEED, THE NOISE IS 'VERY' LOW. I WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE AND WE ARE VERY HAPPY WITH IT. BY THE WAY DID YOU GET THE E-MAIL I SENT YOU?

Thanks MikeG,

I didn't receive your e-mail.

I think something might be messed with my e-mail info on the GM-Truck website, because I tried to send myself a message late last night and have not gotten it.

Anyway, thanks for your information about your exhaust.

Installed a flowmaster 50 on my 2002 2500HD crew. I got the dual 3" ins dual 2.5 out. I wanted to use the the factory 3.5 stainless pipe and keep the truck looking stock. It sounds great and only cost me $140 for the whole setup installed. I also installed a K&N FIPK. It is amazing the difference in power. Also getting about 2 mpg better gas mileage.

Can you get the K&N FIPK for the 2500HD 8.1L?  K&N claims that you can pick up almost 30 more horses from it!  But I checked around the web and only saw it for the 6L. Thanks!
