new engine update

Sorry guys, no pics, the camera didn't work and we are moving so fast I didn't even have time anyway.

Old engine out - new engine in  :)

What we found on the way:

Timing was way off on the old engine, probably due to a sloppy timing chain. My plug, cap and rotor were all toast, even being only 10 months old

The valves were as white as paper, not sure if this is good or not??

The 2 EGR ports in the intake were CAKED with carbon, we had to chisel the carbon out with a small screwdriver to get it all out   . Once it's running I'm going to disconnect the vaccuum line and spray the EGR out!!!

Exhaust manifolds shrink if you take them off the engine and sit for a day to wait for the new motor

The new engine is in with 85% of it done. Went back in quite easy, bolted right to the tranny with little effort. We still have to install the distributor and get top dead center to set the timing. Cap, rotor, wires, power steering pump, and all coolong components still have to be installed. We're almost there

:thumb:

I bought the Fram Sure Drain drain plug to make changing the oil easier, I'll let you know how it works

Also upgraded my wires to MSD 8.5mm Super...no more 7mm GM wires

We should be done today, running and driving later this afternoon, will post another update once I get it out!!!

So how did the rest of the install go?  Hopefully you got everything done and it actually started...lol  Keep us updated on how the new engine is... :(

Hey Sin install went great, we started the project Thursday night and finished Saturday afternoon  :thumb:

From there it took us / me till Monday afternoon to get the distributor and timing set. Can you say frustrating??? The Chiltons manual is not clear on how to set the timing for the first time, seems there is a bypass mode when first setting it. The whole time we had TDC but could never get the timing right. Had we read the engine sticker on the fan shroud...and even that was not clear  :flag:

First 100 miles:

I've gone pretty easy for the break-in period so far, no hard accelerations, mostly just cruising around. Oil pressure is 25% better than the old motor, everything runs cool and smooth. It doesn't seem like I have to put my foot into the pedal as much to cruise along...it's hard to keep it under 70

The true test will be next weekend when I tow my boat up to NH for a fishing tournament. At that point I should have over 500 miles and have changed the oil. GM says that 500 miles is the break-in point and I can go back to "normal" driving and towing. I really can't wait to put my foot into it and see what she'll do  :(
