since the oil filter is in such a dumb place and so much oil goes everywhere, anyone ever put on and or used a relocation kit on this 8.1L engine? and if so, did you get a dual filter or single filter. Am thinkiing about getting the amsoil dual bypass kit. or going to truck performance center and getting a single unit and useing a mobile1 filter on it

I don't know what those kits cost but you can buy an oil filter wrench for $8.00 that will make things easier. The one I bought allows you to remove the filter from directly underneath using a ratchet and socket extension.

Handy and cheap too. :(

not worried about getting the filter on/off. just getting used oil all over the place. Now, with that said, I havent done my 1st oil change yet since i got it. only been 3weeks, but to me, it looks as if it will just dribble all over the place when you take the filter off.

One of my weedend projects for the up coming weedend is to install the Amsoil dual by pass. That is one of the reasons I decided on an after market filter. You can always drive an awl through the bottom side of the filter to drain it first. But the dual by pass setup is to sweet. I just had to have it for my new truck.

I don't usually answer tech. type questions because I would rather let the  several members on here that really know their stuff answer instead. Since this pretty basic and I have recent experience. I can say the eight dollar wrench I bought is the way to go.. I've only changed my own oil on this truck once now that I have switched to Mobile1. Getting that filter off as you can guess was not easy. The filter wrench that I'm talking about tightens around the bottom of the filter so when you get it loose you can then reach over the top of the front drive shaft with your other hand to get it out. You do have to be careful but, If I can do it with out spilling a drop I know you can.  :thumb:

You know what makes the oil change easier?  Wear a pair of welding gloves and then use a socket oil-filter wrench to get the filter off.  They'll prevent your arms and hands from getting burned from the exhaust manifold and pipe.  The 8.1's filter location is totally a pain in the a$$!  Actually, it's probably a fine location until you add in the 4x4 option . . .

I agree it is a pain in the ??s. No matter how careful I am (with the socket type setup described above) I still spill some, maybe its just me. I have tried the poking a hole routine and made a mess as well.

Do I understand correctly that if you get the relocation kit you can substitute a Mobile 1 filter? How much does it cost and were do you get it?

I have an old carpet I put down under the drain pan to absorb any that might spill.  It's worked fine and believe me I've spilled plenty.  I even dropped the filter into the drain pan once but the carpet was big enough to catch the splatter.

Of course having a 2WD model makes it much easier than you 4WD guys

ive tried a filter relocation kit on my 4 cyl sonoma and wont ever suggest it again.i got the block adaptor sealed, but no matter what i did, even with a set of hoses made from a hydrolics place, wouldnt stop leaking.

My father ran the dual bypass on his '97 Powerstroke for 3 years with 0 problems and I know others that are currently doing the same thing.

I'm also thinking about adding one to the HD in the near future.

While we are on the subject of oil filter relocations, where is the best place to mount the relocated filter? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. My kit arrived today and I am looking forward to using Mobile One filters from here on out.

No one has spoken to this point yet...  The Amsoil Bypass filter system is AWESOME!

Oppps.I didn't mention it by name but the Amsoil dual bybass is what I was referring to in my initial post.
